“3 RIDING MODES including Fully Automatic 15 mph with throttle, Pedal Assist with 5 Levels of motorized assistance, and traditional bike pedaling. Get there quickly with just the right amount of exercise. Tired after a long day? Zip home effortlessly on Full Automatic. The CS-260 Extended Life battery provides up to 12 miles on a single charge without pedaling and up to 75 miles for PAS.” - Amazon
@Dolemite@moofi@riceatusc One way to get over the weight limitation is to put slime in your tires, prevents leaks and punctures. Works great in my scooter.
And the doctor did recommend I get more exercise, such as riding a bicycle – this does have full motor mode, right? So technically, I’d be riding a bike. (I guess I’d still get some exercise carrying this in and out of the house.)
I asked on an ebike forum whether this was a good bike, and got this response:
"That’s pretty close to the lowest-end electric bike you’re likely to find, and I’d say that price is about right for it. Nothing stands out as dangerously bad (though I haven’t found any info about what’s in that battery), but it’s just… all around meh. It’s got a top speed of either 12mph or 15mph (the Amazon listing claims both), and a tiny battery with low range (the 75mi range claim on the Amazon page is distilled nonsense).
If you just need it for a couple miles here and there, or you want something to ride around your neighborhood on in the weekends, it might be fine. If you need a workhorse, I don’t expect it’d do well in that role."
Gosh I wish I had the money for this! Probably selling it when a pile of people are fully or partly laid off isn’t going to help with sales. Umm maybe won’t sell out? Maybe then I can be sent one that didn’t sell in my irk? (). I do have a full sized folding bike but no electric motor on it. It is strictly squirrel people powered. This would be nice to have. The first thing you have sold that I have seriously coveted!

For those thinking that electric=environmental, you have to think about how the electricity you get is made. If it comes from coal, that new Tesla is really a coal powered vehicle.
@Kyser_Soze And if you run on people power, that’s powered by proteins, which often are created from animal proteins, and cows fart a lot. If you ride a bicycle, you are running on cow farts.
If you ride a bicycle and are vegan, then I doubt we’d have anything in common to discuss. Probably best to avoid each other.
@Kyser_Soze …not coal-powered in many parts of the country. Also if you invest in the Tesla solar roof and PowerWall system, you can power your house and vehicle that way.
@Kyser_Soze Stop spreading anti-EV FUD. Even if powered by 100% coal electricity (which is literally nowhere anymore), EVs are STILL cleaner than gas cars and most hybrids. And the gap keeps widening as more renewable energy is added to the grid. Gas cars get dirtier over their lives as catalytic converters get worn out, seals wear out, etc. So just stop with the FUD.
@Kyser_Soze That is why you should also push legislators and other groups to include less poluting forms in the short term and renewable in the long term. Although, certain areas are farther along than others by a far measure.
@johneed@Kyser_Soze Sweet!
Do you care to share more info?
Annual usage? Are you Off the grid, or just adjacent to it? Do you backfeed excess power to the grid?
What do you use for storage?
What are the safety measures required for L.A. or lithium batteries?
This is relevant to my interests, but there are too many “scammers” in my area to get good info. (Lots of folks are leasing panels for their roof, which is, um…, unwise, IMO.)
@G1@Kyser_Soze We are on the grid. My utility company has a program where you can contract to pay a little extra every month to allocate up to 100% of your usage sourced from renewable. We have done that, and we pay about $5 extra per month.
However, we’re ending that contract, because we decided to invest into owning our own rooftop solar array. We have prime south-facing roof. We’re getting 23 LG-brand 320 watt panels, which should produce 100%-110% of our electricity. That is based on two years of bill review. I’m too lazy to look up the Kwh, but we our monthly electric is ~$100.00.
I looked at Tesla Powerwalls, but in the end we’re not going to store our power. All power produced is sold to the grid; all power consumed is bought from our utility. Over the course of a year, we’ll be a net seller, so a little extra goes toward fees, taxes, or natural gas charges. Going forward, we’re protected from all future rate increases.
Total installed cost, which included all the legwork with utility and such is ~$30K. About half of that is covered by a one-time federal tax credit and also a 10-year utility rebate (per Kwh).
We elected to invest $1K, and finance the remainder over 15 years. When we consider the tax credit and rebate funds, our monthly loan payment amount will be the same as what we used to pay for electricity. After the loan is paid, then we’re golden. The LG panels are 100% warrantied for 25 years, and are allegedly good for 30-35 years. There is a slight drop in output each year, but very slight.
@G1@Kyser_Soze P.S. I know solar panels require metals mining and contain toxic chemicals. I know wind turbines have downsides too. I still like to believe it’s a little greener overall, and it will definitely save us a lot of money over the next 30 years, andor add some value to our home should we decide to sell it.
@dijit27 Up to 12 mph, up to 12 miles on a charge, weighs 45 lbs, looks like fun right now because you’re stuck at home, $450 for a bike you’re (hopefully) not going to have time to ride in a month is gonna seem like a really poor investment 6 months from now when the repercussions of all this “stimulus” money hit the economy. You’re welcome.
@dijit27 Folding bikes are absolutely worth having, but here you’re paying for the electric gimmick which is probably also a point of failure. I recommend a Zizzo folding bike which appears to be the same frame and hardware but not electric and definitely cheaper. I bought one to use at work and has been a great tool.
@frankefresh Yup, it does look fun now. But, one way or another it probably would end up just getting left in a corner. I think the scorching heat that will be arriving soon is what would end up keeping it in storage.
@peabs007 Thanks, I hadn’t thought about the folding part as being an important feature. I could save even more if I just used the bike I have instead of being tempted by the electric gimmick.
@MrMark Good point, I can just imagine it, the battery crapping out just as I’m trying to go up one of these stupid hills. Probably just abandon that heavy sucker at the bottom.
We put an elec motor on our reg bikes, so no, but they really help when pooped out. Folding is great idea for travel, if u have a boat or short on storage.
Seriously considering this . I live in the city. Gonna need a primo lock for it though. I live in the city.
Here’s a quick review from Beast. Made their recommended list.
Totem is a 44-pound electric bicycle for adults with a 250-watt electric motor. It has both pedal-free and pedal assist modes, and large (20-inch) tires that offer an excellent on-road and off-road experience. For students, it is also a reputable brand because of its cost and upgraded parts. Its extended life battery, for instance, is one of the best. With pedal assist, you can travel for up to 75 miles on this bicycle, which is twice the range of similar brands. In full-electric mode, you can ride it for up to 12 miles per charge.
Do you live in a small dorm room or a home with a small garage? Totem’s foldable design is beneficial. When not in use, it will take up little space in your home or dorm. The frame is durable (aluminum) and has a fade-proof matte black theme that students like. Totem has a fast-charging batter (4-6 hour) with an in-built USB port for charging smartphones and or tablets.
What We Like
USB charging port
Folding aluminum frame
Powerful motor (250 watts)
Three riding modes
Fast charging (4-6 hours)
Our Verdict
Totem is not your ordinary electric bike. Apart from commuting, you can use it as a charger for your phone. It is also durable, fast charging, and has a powerful motor (250w) that reaches 20MPH.
@irenegade Not to throw shade on Beast, as I’m unfamiliar with the site, but that “review” reads like it someone just read the ad copy for the bike and then wrote the review. I tend to look for reviews that actually talk about first hand experience.
I have a couple of Ebikes. I really like them. The battery on this one is really tiny, so the range is short. It is around 1/4 the price of what is typical though. If you want it for short trips, this might be a good buy.
Ordered one and meh defaulted to my last ship address which was a one off to my sister. I caught it immediatly in the email order confirmation Sunday night so I hit the “I need help with this” button and asked for the shipping address to be changed to my billing. No update until last nights email showing it was shipping to my sister (in another state!) Original offer said it wouldn’t ship until May so the early ship caught me off guard. Sent a second account issue message last night and no response to that either. What do I do?
I know it’s way late to be adding to this chain but I bought two of the Totem bikes and we absolutely LOVE them. It’s about two miles from our condo to the marina and we are never less than at 50% battery when we get back. If you are a hardcore rider you won’t be happy with the power but for the weekend users like us on mostly flat land they are perfect. We have one significant hill on our loop so when I’m carrying 5 gallons of gas (for the boat) and towing my 60 lbs dog I have to help it a bit other than that you really only need to peddle a bit to get they started. They charge in a couple hours and for $150 you can buy an extra battery from the manufacturer. We are in our 60’s and carry them up to our 2nd floor condo without help:)

Im too fat for this.
Also too out of shape.
Sell me more food
@riceatusc I’m 255 and it rode just fine. Don’t let the weight limit fool you. It’s VERY sturdy.
@moofi @riceatusc it may not be frame limitation but the tire limitation of that’s the case. Just something to think about.
@moofi 255? You don’t look a day over 21.
@Dolemite @moofi @riceatusc One way to get over the weight limitation is to put slime in your tires, prevents leaks and punctures. Works great in my scooter.
There needs to be another mode on it. The “No electric allowed 'til you lose weight, fatboy” mode.
@G1 it’s there it’s called the “this frame too fragile for ur fat frame and it’s collapsing as we speak” mode.
Looks like a good deal on a good bike.
And the doctor did recommend I get more exercise, such as riding a bicycle – this does have full motor mode, right? So technically, I’d be riding a bike. (I guess I’d still get some exercise carrying this in and out of the house.)
I might be getting ahead of myself, but you actually have something that’s pretty cool tonight!
Too expensive to impulse buy, I’ll have to sleep on it. Might be too late at that point… We’ll see.
Is Meh an official Totem reseller? (The warranty coverage)
Confidence would be higher if there were more reviews on the Amazon page - for a year old product.

What does that mean?
That coal is NOT used for power generation, or that many fuels are used to feed the grid?
Fossil fuels create 63% of power in the US (coal at 24% of total electricity). And falling, which is great. Need more nukes, better solar, etc.
