I'm always excited for these space events like visible meteor showers and eclipses and stuff but I feel like I always forget about them and end up missing it and just looking at pictures online the next day.
@JonT One year when the Perseid meteor showers were supposed to be particularly spectacular, my wife and I went out to some friends' house in the country and brought cots and sleeping bags so we could fully enjoy it. We saw a few meteors and fell asleep. Not spectacular.
@JonT
I've come to believe it's all in where you live or where you've been.
Coolest light show in the world sucks if you live in city limits of a major metro.
On the other hand, in-laws are wheat farmers in western Nebraska. Any given night out there looks like the 4th of July: shooting stars, satellites, flickering stars that you'd never see without getting off the beaten path.
Ft Irwin, NTC was always good for that kind of stuff. Alaska in the winter. I went to Molokai when it had but a single traffic light. On a moonless night, the blackest night I've ever seen. Could see Saturn with birding binoculars. Fifteen days later, full moon, reflecting off the ocean and bouncing off the mountains, so bright you could read under it. And then there's Mauna Kea, where you look down to see the North Star and Southern Cross in the same sky.
Currently live outside Denver, which ain't bad for light pollution. Can spot a couple of satellites per night with the naked eye without even trying.
Wherever you go, whenever you go, try to get outside one night somewhere along the way. Might see something, might see nothing. Either way, it's part of the big cosmic ride.
@saodell When I lived around a 2 week canoe paddle from the James Bay we had so many northern lights it was no longer an "event". And the night sky was so full... miss that (but not the 40 below and no electricity, no running water, using outhouses...).
Thats not a supermoon. Wheres its cape?
@MrGlass
@carl669 Thanks, was starting to get worried no one would take the bait
@MrGlass i waited in hopes that someone who's better at photoshop would take up the challenge. instead, we're stuck with my janky-ass photoshop skills.
I just set a reminder.
@hallmike Same here, thanks @mikibell !
Yes, thanks @mikibell ! And thanks @jaremelz for reminding me to say thanks.
i've got the telescope out and ready to go. now if i only had a camera mount to attach to it. (hint hint meh buyers... camera adapter and T-mount for Nikon D90)
Thanks, @mikibell! I love this stuff, but it is usually overcast or raining in Washington.
@KDemo That's what the husband and I were lamenting when I told him about this.
@jaremelz @KDemo you never know. we might get lucky.
@carl669 I sure hope so!
@carl669 - It could happen.
Sunday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46.
@carl669 - Actually, it will be total at 7:47 pm, and it's supposed to be clear during the day, so there really is a chance we'll see it.
@KDemo hmm so is that a vote for the east coast?? We are going to have gorgeous weather this week!
@mikibell - Nah. I'll take our weather every other day of the year.
@KDemo It is raining and overcast here... sigh. No place to drive to see it either - rain and clouds for miles.
@Kidsandliz Sorry, at least slooh has it live online, I know it's not the same. http://live.slooh.com/stadium/live/mega-harvest-moon-eclipse
Hoping for clear skies, and sobriety :)
@mmlivezey yea, sobriety
@mmlivezey
@mmlivezey @DMlivezey @jaremelz if there's one thing we all know, it's that stargazing and universe pondering go hand-in-hand with sobriety.
@JonT if we=@JonT, and we<>@dmlivezey, then true, else false
Stoopid clouds.
@KDemo and other locals to us, for once we are in the freaking clear! Woohoo!
@jaremelz - I'm pretty jazzed, this should be beautiful!
@KDemo I feel like we're the prettiest princesses at the ball. For once it's going to be our night!
@jaremelz Hehe - Well we are lucky to live where it's beautiful because it rains so much, but now it's not raining so we get the best of both.
@KDemo Exactly! Now I just need to stay up. So tired from the night away.
@jaremelz It's really early, starts in 40 minutes. It may be too light to see the whole thing.
@KDemo But if I'm not wrong, it should be really good at 7:50, right? I am puttering around to keep out of my bed!
@jaremelz - Right. You must have had major fun! You can make it for the eclipse, I know you can!
@KDemo You know it, because around 8 is when I always wake up again. Then I can't fall asleep until 1.
For those with clouds you can watch a live stream on
NASA TV if you get that channel.
It's pretty cool to think that mehtizens across the country will be looking at the same moon at the same time tonight.
@KDemo
