Total eclipse of the goat (April 2024 goat nominations)
3So there’s going to be a total eclipse of the sun soon – and ya better not look at it without proper viewing glasses!
It’s also going to be another month, which means it’s time to let our March goat @Jackinga roam free and choose another mehmber to take over the reigns.
So nominate away!

Warby Parker, If you’re near one of their stores, is giving away free eclipse glasses.
@Chronicle
I had never actually heard of Warby Parker before this.
I’d been thinking/planning to track down some eclipse glasses, so I checked to see if they exist anywhere near me (they do). Finally went over to visit them today.
Lowe’s is selling eclipse glasses. Around here, they’re $2.50 each, which is possibly not the best price. On the other hand, Lowe’s probably isn’t lying about the manufacturer and American Paper Optics is a company on the American Astronomical Society’s list of “not going to burn your eyes out” manufacturers.
@yeppers I didn’t do a lot of searching, but one site I got to had a weekend special or something for a box of 50 @ $2/each. (non-special price is $3/each, min. 50) So $2.50 sounds fair… unless someone else has real ones for cheaper.
(I didn’t actually get around to checking Amazon prices. Or legitimacy.)
Robert F Kennedy, Jr. will probably be pronounced a Goat and blamed after the upcoming elections, no matter who wins. So, might as well nominate him now (before it’s April Fool’s day).
Can we have a non-member goat? (The in-absentia part has already been addressed and excused…)
/showme A Goat holding the reins.
@mediocrebot I think I had that as a hundred-piece jigsaw puzzle when I was a kid.
/showme a goat wearing protective eyewear while watching a total solar eclipse.
@mediocrebot You’re getting pretty good at this gig Mr. Bot!
In the spirit of actually nominating someone,
I nominate @xobzoo for participating in the forums (fora?) and especially for this exchange:
@2many2no As the sole dissenting vote, I feel it’s important to keep in mind that @xobzoo eats (or at least considers eating) his soup/cereal with a fork. If you had ever wondered, as all of us naturally have, what kind of monster does that… We have our answer.
@2many2no @shahnm @xobzoo

NO ONE, absolutely no one in their right mind is the ONLY answer I came up with!

Well… I actually thought I was literally losing my mind when my mom brought me a fork to eat a bowl of soup ONLY because I ASKED FOR IT!
I said to myself who on earth would actually ask for a fork to eat a bowl of soup?
THAT being said, I think @xobzoo is definitely in the right place here in the Meh forums, AND… would be a great goat!
@2many2no @Lynnerizer @xobzoo It’s the ForkZombie apocalypse! There are multiple fork-soup eaters among us!! Hide the Irkettes and Irklets!!! Run for the hills!!!
@narfcake
I think what you meant to say is that @Jackina will soon be eclipsed by the new April goat.
Fixed it for you. You are welcome.
@Kidsandliz @narfcake ITYBM @Jackinga
@Jackinga @Kidsandliz @werehatrack Um, yeah. Oops.
/image embarrassed cat

(That means the March blame thread is misspelled too.)
@narfcake Originally, I think it was misspelled twice, and I fixed one but missed the second. Both fixed now.
@Jackinga @narfcake @werehatrack Hey I only copy/pasted the March goat’s name from this thread… don’t blame me
/showme a person who goes by the name xobzoo eating a bowl of goat soup with a fork.
@mediocrebot That soup must be full of STEROIDS!!
@IndifferentDude @mediocrebot

Or demonic!
Predicated coverede for my area.
98.63%
Because I have common sense will not stare and point. Might step outside for a few minutes to observe it pass over. It is interesting
@unksol also by observing I just mean let it go dark.
You have luck with you glasses. When I was a kid it was a whole make a shadow box. But you go your eye iradiation.
Yes I know on a tiny slot with protection you may get away with it. I paid a chunk to get my eyeballs lazerd correcy. I think I’ll keep them that way.
@unksol An old welding helmet with the UV blocking glass and triple arc welding filters worked well for me in the past. There were dire warnings about doing this, but those were based on the assumption that the new autodarkening helmets were involved. Those just don’t go dark enough.
@werehatrack I think I still would rather not go with a hacked solution. Just cause why?
If you were 100% sure what would it get you? I can go with not looking directly at the sun. I think In full path you could at just the right the but I’m not sure what the value would be
@werehatrack oh right. I forgot don’t stare at the sun is so we don’t see the death star in orbit. Or eleasium
@unksol Looks like we will only get about 32% coverage here this time (NW Oregon). Meh.
(We got prime viewing with full coverage for the one a few years back, though. See one, seen 'em all.)
@macromeh right there were a couple… and they are sort of cool. But I also don’t get taking off work and states having to set up “emergencies” for them. Like… ok. I get you’ll be some tourist. But can it really be that many astronomist?
@unksol @werehatrack my dad did the helmet before. Works great. I dont have ine so I go for the approved glasses. It is a beautiful sight to behold!!
@tinamarie1974 @werehatrack ok. Maybe I’m just boring lol. Or already close enough to it
@tinamarie1974 @werehatrack like if I had kids and 100% trusted the glasses… which is a new thing And it was the last one as kids.
But it’s not and we’ve had several. Most of us make it to 60 or 80. Relatively rare but not extremely rare. Just saying
@tinamarie1974 @werehatrack and I guess if anyone wanted to come camp in my backyard I’d make a party out of it but. Thankfully only 98% and the band is wide enough. Lol
@tinamarie1974 @unksol @werehatrack
Is Meh headquaters going to be in the path of totality?!
@Kyeh @tinamarie1974 @unksol Meh should get at least 30-45 seconds of totality, but the current weather forecast is for rain across the entire area. That’s 8 days out, of course, and could change substantially.
@tinamarie1974 @unksol @werehatrack Yeah - that would be sad. I guess the annular one last year was clouded out for a lot of TX, right?
@Kyeh @tinamarie1974 @unksol @werehatrack Here’s a map of the area (Thanks for the link @unksol).
@IndifferentDude @Kyeh @tinamarie1974 @werehatrack
@IndifferentDude @Kyeh @tinamarie1974 @werehatrack you can manipulate the map using the whole two finger method than drop a point in the area with one finger. I’m not sure it’s Google maps level. It also keeps telling me I could drive a few hours to see it. There’s not a place I would want to go to and I’m fine with my view
@IndifferentDude @Kyeh @tinamarie1974 @unksol @werehatrack 90% here. Fortunately my doctor appointment doesn’t start until about 20 min after it will be over. Hate to say it but I am willing to be late to the apt.
@IndifferentDude @Kidsandliz @Kyeh @tinamarie1974 @werehatrack also for what it’s worth he’s probably correct

/image https://xkcd.com/2914/
@IndifferentDude @Kidsandliz @Kyeh @tinamarie1974 @werehatrack the alt text is missing. You know how you have to click on the image?
“A partial eclipse is like a cool sunset. A total eclipse is like someone broke the sky”
And I only feel you need to know this because for xkcd if you go through the mobile site
https://m.xkcd.com/
There is just an alttext button at the bottom. I did not know that for YEARS because who in their right mind would go to the mobile version of a website?!?! Unless a horrible developer forced you to
@unksol So this is why you should drive those two hours and try to see the total eclipse if you possibly can!
@Kyeh well. I mean if I had nothing else to do. And it was 2 hours away. Which it maybe. And some friends in the path. I totally would. It does sound very cool.
But. I also have work, no one in the path,v and I suspect state owned land could be a mess. Like I said if I had kids. Or a reason to make a thing of it. I probably would.
The way I would have handled it would be take them out of school for the week and go camping though. And find someone to not kill the cats lol
@unksol Oof, why should fun stuff be only for kids? Oh well!
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@Kyeh there are things that I’m motivated to do when there are other people here that I’m not motivated to do just for myself was all I’m saying.
Also there are things that will totally blow a kids mind. And that’s just. Almost always more fun

I would like to be nominated
