Well, today is the end of VMP as we know it!
Anyone have any plans to bail at the last minute or do you plan to hang in there to keep that special cachet that the “V” badge brings?
I rejoined VMP when I got my last Fuko so I’m going to keep it at least until that one is about to renew. At that point, I’ll have to make a decision. Seems likely I will keep it.
When I go through my past orders, it’s definitely enough to warrant keeping VMP.
I did take advantage of the ability to cancel and renew when I needed it. That gave me a few extra free days each year. That method will no longer be available after today.
@cengland0 Sadly, having slept through the fuku and not bothering at eight EST, I found zero items to buy last month. Only one even tempted me. So no last month of VMP for me.
Kinda sad. Since they had that video interviewing the (new?) buyer, I’ve bought close to nothing. I’d kinda hoped they’d go out of their way to have a few enticing items, and then keep the VMPs hooked with a cheapie each month. Oh well. Guess that’s be marketing. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
@CaptAmehrican I agree. We probably won’t receive any free gifts in the future. Not like that happened frequently anyway. I did get some socks and a couple of those USB to micro keychain gizmos but that’s all.
@craigthom Not really free but I can understand why they made you purchase it instead of sending you a random size. By processing it through the ordering system, you can select which size you wanted.
When they sent me my free USB to Micro adapters, they sent it to a friend’s house because the last item I ordered prior to that was a gift and I put her address in the ship-to section. At least I knew where the shirt was going because I picked the address myself.
Note on how boring this will be: Various VMP mentions and sign up options will be removed throughout the day tomorrow. If we miss any we’ll get them the following day or maybe the day after that. We also decided against a last announcement. @unixrab convinced us it sounded like marketing. Once we’re done not marketing, then we can have some fun again.
@snapster since vmp sign ups are over and some of us will now have v badges but nobody else can get them can we go for creative lies.
Ie somewhere put a section what does a v badge stand for?
Victorious in meh battle against flying woot monkeys
@RiotDemon per @snapster " We also decided against a last announcement. @unixrab convinced us it sounded like marketing. Once we’re done not marketing, then we can have some fun again."
@RiotDemon A lot of folks didn’t get it. I didn’t (I looked in spam too). Then after I said something in the thread about that maybe a couple of weeks later I got one. I do get their daily spam mail though (yes I know we can opt out) so not sure why I didn’t get that announcement. Guess they have some work to do on their email lists… : )
@snapster or @shawn… can’t you just make @unixrab an honorary VMP for life or some such? I’m sure there are a bunch of us that would be willing to donate to such a good cause.
@baqui63 Well it is @mikibell’s fault I didn’t read carefully and duplicated your request. A couple of other people made the same request. You’d think a multitude of requests might sway the outcome. Apparently not. We might need an uprising. Or at least a protest. I wonder if we can virtually picket them. LOL
@RedOak Feels like $5 more expensive than Costco on an annual basis. They got us like you boil a frog. Throw a frog into hot water and it jumps right out (annual fee paid once a year). Put it in cold water and slowly add heat and frog boils (payments once a month). Sneaky psych marketing trick…
@Kidsandliz@RedOak the primary difference is that you don’t pay shipping so you subtract those savings for apples to apples. Costco is an access fee only and access is free here.
Prime is a more legit comparison, but again there, you should subtract freight savings.
FWIW, we want to try and design a future membership that expresses gratitude better for supporting our company. When it comes down to it, this is the value we hope you feel the best about.
@snapster Thanks. I wasn’t so much making a functional (apples to apples) comparison - but rather a value comparison. (The opportunity cost thing - that really matters to a scarce wallet.)
If we more rarely buy from Meh vs the early days, that fee offers less value.
Hopefully we’re in for some more of the fun deals we saw earlier!
@snapster I know I don’t buy enough to pay for VMP as opposed to amazon where I easily buy enough. The reason I am Vmp has as much to do with the forum as anything else. I like joking around with the crowd here. @barney makes me smile with purple. @holibol show up with random witty kindness @kidsandliz is always coming up with nice things @moose is the king of images @ELUNO is a nice flirt when not adding spiders and snakes to the mix @f00l is foolish in the best way even the new guy @woodhouse is ax obsessive but hilarious
Yes I agree you’d need to subtract shipping however doing that still isn’t apples to apples…
With places like Costco, Sams, etc. I see what the discount typically is (and walking through Sam’s with a friend I notice there is some stuff in there that is cheaper or the same as at Walmart and elsewhere) and do the math to figure out how much I’d have to buy for the total discount (eg savings) to equal the membership fee. Another way to look, with at least Costco, is that you used to be able to (and I think still can, haven’t looked recently) buy at 5% more than the member price (maybe other club warehouses too?). Thus I also look at how much do I have to spend to recoup the membership fee just looking at the 5% surcharge.
So in that respect it is the same kind of comparison. We are gambling that we will save money with paying fees in advance, but it isn’t a sure bet unless we buy a lot. The definition of “a lot” depends on the company’s program. Thus the answer to “is it worth it?” varies by individual buying patterns.
By designing “future membership” I am presuming you mean future membership program vs wanting only members who express gratitude to meh LOL
@RedOak of course one can only use so many speaker docs, vacuum cleaners (not sure about knives since those, for some, appear to be like screw drivers and flashlights and with those my brother-in-law and my sister, respectively, say it is not possible to own too many of these)… I think that is part of the problem with fewer interesting things to buy for those of us who have been on here for a while.
@Kidsandliz
With Sam’s and Costco there is also a possible significant time cost.
I used to avoid Costco’s because the only nearby one was always so crowded. Then I found a few things that made it worthwhile, a huge discount on a membership, and so far it’s paid off. I figured out how to go when the place wasn’t packed and the checkout lines weren’t too bad.
Sam’s used to be great when it first started up in the 1980’s. The the internet came in and killed the price comparisons, and the stores were a PITA. Half the time their prices seem to be no better than Walmart, and at least Walmart has self-checkout and you can go in the middle of the night. Then Sam’s moved the only one I could get in and out of quickly to a horrible location for me. I let it lapse.
Both of them evoke a temptation to purchase stuff I don’t need at all in huge quantities, so I only go to Costco for specific stuff now.
Here, Costco does not allow non-members to shop at a markup, according to one of the door-wardens.
@f00l we have both a Costco Exec membership and a SAMs Business membership.
They both pay off nicely. About $500 cash back this cycle.
Gas alone is a big part of it. Their pump price before 4%/5% (Costco/SAMs) rebate tends to be 15-30 cents less per gallon in our area. And we have three cars.
The Costco Exec membership also includes free tire install so that’s $60 on average per year or so for us.
Clearly they try to sell you things you don’t need but avoidance is not a difficult skill.
Regarding waiting in checkout lines, SAMs has completely eliminated that with their amazing scan and go app. A real competitive advantage from a customer satisfaction perspective.
For identical things we find Costco and SAMs prices to be within a penny of each other.
course one can only use so many speaker docs, vacuum cleaners…
Your product universe is a meh-sheltered one.
There are multitudes, even unlimited, other products out there to be had.
The trick is finding the deal on them to make it a meh fit.
An offbeat example, the battery-powered bucket shower that was sold here twice. Bought it both times and it makes all the difference to our off-grid camping comfort.
BTW, I’d buy another JBL Mini speaker dock in a heart beat. Love that thing.
@RedOak That is true about the shower - bought one for my best friend (wanted one for me too but that will have to wait until I have more money) for christmas. I theJBL micro? mini? one with the guess how many pieces it was smashed into (thank you statistics LOL). Reluctantly gave it to my kid for christmas. Wanted to keep it but I knew she’d love it and so it was her “big” present from me.
And yes there is an entire universe of stuff out there that could be sold here. The question is whether or not it would be sold here…
@compunaut Amazon also has the camp showers so you could camel them. But it is frustrating since there are a couple variants/brands that look identical so who knows? We use one and keep the 2nd one ready in case of need - we’re spoiled! Haven’t run out of battery on up to 4 days 2-3 people showering so far tho.
We have a big (2-3 gallon) stew kettle with hermetic seal that we throw over the fire to heat water that we then mix with cold H2O in a 5-gal paint pail. A cheap digital thermometer lets us know when it’s ready. Luxury tent camping.
@compunaut I have used the solar heating shower bags. They are heavy to hang but work well. Also if you are in a hurry just heat up some water and throw it in there. You have to watch out that the water doesn’t get too hot if you are heating it in the sun.
@compunaut we have a solar shower bag and used it before getting the camp shower from Meh. 'Not as much of a fan as @Kidsandliz.
But we camp in a northern area of the Great Lakes so while it can get to the high 90’s, the solar gain is less intense. We found it helped to lay the bag flat on a dark sheet of plastic so the water was as evenly spread as possible. And on cooler days we would jostle the water every hour or so to bring the cooler bottom water to the top.
Finally we just used the bag to raise the temperature as much as reasonable and added fire heated water. And of course that took care of a single shower.
In effect we used it more as a shower than a solar-heated shower.
Since we use a collapsible shower tent that would not hold the weight of the bag with water, if the tent was not under a tree we’d construct a teepee out of conduit and hang the bag from that. A pain since a full shower bag is pretty heavy.
These battery camp showers are life changers for convenience and comfort!
I’ll have to see if I can find a photo of our setup.
@compunaut that DYI solar heater looks easy. Surprised he can get sustained heat gain like that in such a small space.
We have unlimited wood where we camp and keep a fire going a lot of the day so haven’t felt the urge to go solar. We also have a propane camp oven/stove we can use to heat water.
@RedOak I mostly hung it from a tree when camping, but I used it the most on a schooner and hung it from the rigging because the showers on the boat were only cold water and I wanted a warm one.
I have to say that since Nov. 2016 I’ve received excellent customer service and support. Some really great buy’s having my VMP and haven’t returned one item I bought on Meh. It’s a shame to see it go because there are some really great people on this site and if I had a question or problem somebody always came to my rescue. I’m still gonna hang in for now because I feel I it was well worth the cost to be one. GOD BLESS THE USA!
@RedOak Not that I know of unless something arrives broken and then they replace it if they can/refund you…well excepting fuku/fuko’s where you purposely get sent some broken items and with these they don’t pack anything very well so things get broken in transit and that is considered your tough luck… but then again you know that going into purchasing those and so buy knowing what can happen.
hmm… just did a quick scroll through this thread, and it seems that virtually everyone has a ‘badge’ in front of their name. Most are “V” badges, some are “K”, and there’s the goat and octopus of course, but then there is @unixrab saying:
Today is the day when @unixrab joins the VMP club.
@PlacidPenguin
@unixrab tell us how you really feel What happened to my cookies, btw?
@unixrab
@unixrab that’s what you think
I rejoined VMP when I got my last Fuko so I’m going to keep it at least until that one is about to renew. At that point, I’ll have to make a decision. Seems likely I will keep it.

VMPDay?
I’m sad that sighing up won’t be around for @unixrab to hate anymore.
@f00l
@unixrab Go ahead. I heard they are giving away chemical cheesy sauce kits to everyone who signs up today.
@mfladd
Sounds gross.
@mfladd @PlacidPenguin
@f00l hope someone signed up @unixrab as a joke (grin)
@Kidsandliz
https://meh.com/forum/topics/todays-the-day#58b6313bcb3f700804573845
I know i didn’t cancel due to the vmp ending.
I expect vmp will change soon.
@CaptAmehrican I agree. We probably won’t receive any free gifts in the future. Not like that happened frequently anyway. I did get some socks and a couple of those USB to micro keychain gizmos but that’s all.
@cengland0 I think that may have had more to do with the “K” than the “V” badge. No goodies for me in my paltry 512 “V” days…
@cengland0
@chienfou nope those were VMP gifts.
This was the perk:
@cengland0 Nothing free in the year and a half I’ve been VMP, so that wouldn’t be a change.
OK, the black on black VMP shirt was a dollar, but that’s not quite free.
Keeping it. VMP since 11/2004. Skipping Starducks or DD once a month.
@miko1 Since 2004? Do you know something the rest of us don’t? LOL
Oops, 2014. Dern auto-correct did not work that time.
@snapster
How about a “Goatapus fanclub”, where people pay $5/month and they get free shipping on all orders?
@snapster What’s wrong with some marketing?
@snapster since vmp sign ups are over and some of us will now have v badges but nobody else can get them can we go for creative lies.
Ie somewhere put a section what does a v badge stand for?
Victorious in meh battle against flying woot monkeys
Or some other silly answer
@CaptAmehrican oh we’re going to have more fun than that. Or at least I will.
@snapster nicely done!
I’m still waiting for the email that tells me VMP is going away.
@RiotDemon per @snapster " We also decided against a last announcement. @unixrab convinced us it sounded like marketing. Once we’re done not marketing, then we can have some fun again."
@connorbush I’m talking about the email they sent out around a month ago letting people know that vmp was going away.
@RiotDemon ahhhh. That makes sense.
Do I get to keep my “V” badge?
@PocketBrain as long as you keep your VMP membership
@shawn or as long as he stays pure
@PocketBrain don’t get married my friend
@legendornothing According to some that might be a sure fire way to remain chaste.
@snapster or @shawn… can’t you just make @unixrab an honorary VMP for life or some such? I’m sure there are a bunch of us that would be willing to donate to such a good cause.
@baqui63
@mfladd
Almost perfect. Needs a disdainful cat.
@f00l how about a car sticker to put on it?
@baqui63 if it is “honorary” then, like “honorary degrees” it is simply a label without the actual benefits. And no tuition/monthly fee either.
@unixrab gets the V but none of the VMP bennies.
@mfladd @f00l @RedOak
stop
@unixrab
<innocence mode>
Stop what?
@unixrab trying a bit of patience. Waiting to see whether @snapster or @dave does anything exciting.
@RedOak impossible.
@f00l
@unixrab
@unixrab
Gosh, what did you say?
I think I can understand you better if you are one of those VMP types.
@f00l inconceivable
@unixrab
@f00l
@unixrab
VMP really helps.
@f00l …no
@baqui63 I already suggested that in a different thread and @snapster said no. See his response here:
https://meh.com/forum/topics/its-gone---vmp-is-dead#58b71e951c2dc30afc45f8c7
@Kidsandliz, yes I saw that.
Though I’ll note that my suggestion was “already made” for almost 18 hours when you made yours.
I’m blaming @eluno and @mikibell for being overlooked, though I honestly feel it is mostly that @snapster just doesn’t like me.
LOL
This is un-Scot-cheap-ass behavior, keeping VMP after an auto-renew. Normally would only renew manually with the next meh-item-buy.
Feels uncomfortable.
@RedOak old habits die hard!
@Kidsandliz hmmm. That Costco compare is a painful one. We certainly get a lot more out of our Costco fee!
@RedOak Yup marketing works LOL
@Kidsandliz @RedOak the primary difference is that you don’t pay shipping so you subtract those savings for apples to apples. Costco is an access fee only and access is free here.

@f00l we have both a Costco Exec membership and a SAMs Business membership.

The Costco Exec membership also includes free tire install so that’s $60 on average per year or so for us.
Clearly they try to sell you things you don’t need but avoidance is not a difficult skill.

@RedOak Have you ever tried the solar heating bags? I’m also wanting to try this DIY Solar Water heater.
@compunaut I have used the solar heating shower bags. They are heavy to hang but work well. Also if you are in a hurry just heat up some water and throw it in there. You have to watch out that the water doesn’t get too hot if you are heating it in the sun.
@CaptAmehrican Aww… You just made my day. And do you know what? The forum became a lot more funner with you here.
Edit: I think we can all agree that @f00l is f00lish.
@compunaut we have a solar shower bag and used it before getting the camp shower from Meh. 'Not as much of a fan as @Kidsandliz.
