It’s the greatest state in population, because it also includes everyone who is obsessed with the Patriots.
There’s a debate though if it should also include everyone who thinks the West Coast is the greatest, or at the minimum, those people who live in California.
Haven’t been to one in a couple of weeks but we like Aldi and get a lot of stuff there. Special item times like Christmas and their 2-3 times per year German food specials are awesome. But we buy the plastic bags each time because they’re nice and large and useful for things so I’ve never had a Meh bag there.
@gammonater Nah; was on a week-long business trip to Jackson not long ago. Spent a couple hrs after work every day at Grand River.
My brother lives in Portage, tho
@PlacidPenguin I was hoping that someday someone would comment, but sadly they never do as many times as I have used it in TJ’s or Whole Paycheck. Maybe I set the bar too high and should try Dollar Tree?
@heartny Trader Joe’s is owned by a different company named Aldi.
Years ago the brothers who owned the company split and became Aldi North and Aldi South. The Aldi stores in the U.S. are owned by Aldi Sud, while Trader Joe’s is owned by Aldi Nord.
So, no, Aldi in the U.S. and Trader Joe’s are not related.
@craigthom I knew they were both phantom breweries, somehow completely missed that they were related. I’ve had many beers from both, and don’t honestly think I could say a bad word about any (note that I have not had Big Ass Money Stout and I intend to keep it that way). Place I go in DC routinely has the Mikkeller Spontan- beers on tap, and they are some of the best damn sours.
Aldi stores are just great! Awesome selection of unique food items. German chocolate especially! And fantastic nuts and cheese. Shame their working hours are so inconvenient. Who closes at 8 pm this day and age? Make it 24/7, the world should never sleep. The night is alive!
The cart deposit is different, but it works great at keeping all the errant carts out of the parking lot left by lazy inconsiderate folks that won’t walk an extra 50’ to a cart return.
That said, I will admit to having used the extra space next to a double-parking douchebag as a cart return too.
@craigthom I come from a country of no free bags at grocery stores, so I am used to it. There are enough stores that give free bags anyway, so nobody stops you from carrying some with you for cases like this. Also, being ecologically responsible is a thing, so it doesn’t annoy me at all. Not bothered by the cart thing either. What they do have going for them is an awesome selection of stuff, not often available in other grocery stores. And their spiral-cut ham is often the cheapest around, at least here in Midwest.
@narfcake Here they have absolutely insane working hours. I do understand, that they save on that, but it’s very inconvenient for late-night shoppers, like us. At least they’re not closed on Sundays, like some other grocery stores and Chick-fil-a.
@serpent I didn’t say anything was wrong with no free bags; it’s just one of the things that sets Aldi apart in most of the country. I use canvas bags at all grocery stores (and others, although sometimes it confuses them). Besides the ecological thing, they are sturdier and hold more.
There’s only one country larger than Canada, so that narrows it down.
@craigthom Well, yeah, they are different, that’s for sure! But so much of what they sell is not available at Walmart or Target, that it’s worth the extra step. Agreed on bags!
@craigthom I read once that Aldi charges for bags because they dont want to mark up their prices. Most other stores work the prices of bags into their food costs. Aldi claims they save you 1 to 5 cents by making you bring you own or ise the boxes. The shopping cart charge is so you put your cart back. Again a money saving idea. If you have to rent a cart you’re more likely to put it back and not leave it around. Saving their employees time and them money.
Wasn’t me. We have one about 10 miles away and we finally stopped in about 6 months ago. My husband hated it so we left. He thought it was a dirty mess. I didn’t agree but I never got to take my bags out as we didn’t buy anything.
I wish I could rant all of my hatred for ALDI but I would break the internet. However I do stop there about once a quarter. Their garlic powder and onion powder are cheap. Damn near everything else is cheapo. I will add that their meat is generally awful (as is pretty much all grocery store meat) but they do somehow get very nice baby back ribs. Smaller slabs and just really nice.
@pfarro1 It’s not good for everything. But it has its place. Their spiral sliced ham is the one of preference for my extended family every Christmas. Probably the only meat I get there, though.
@pitamuffin@pfarro Don’t buy too much there, but a few things are excellent. Dark chocolate, hard cider, hummus, kefir, frozen OJ concentrate. Spices. Pineapples & avocados. Milk & eggs are VERY affordable for low-income families (tho we buy from local producers).
Wife likes their fair-trade coffee & cheap wine.
I’ve never even heard of Aldi. But then I live in the middle of nowhere, and today’s map shows Wyoming is the only state with zero meh sales.
Of course, there are only two computers here, and we have to run an ethernet cable from Colorado for internet service, so that’s not surprising.
@Omehgawd They are a no frills store. You have to use a quarter to free a cart (you get it back) . You also either bring your own bag or pay for bags. Lots of things are generics or well house brands. But they have great cheese selection and crackers and things like cheap eggs. They have less selection but therefore great prices. They carry this no frills approach to stocking aisles as well.
Not me… wish there WAS an Aldi close by though. It’s over an hour to the nearest one.
It wasn’t me.
i’ve got an aldi 5 minutes away, but it wasn’t me.
Not me, but I do need to make a run to Aldi.
Hey, let’s all wear/carry something meh everytime we go to Aldi!
I was in Aldi at 1030 this AM. First time, last time.
According to their website, the nearest Aldi’s is in Bakersfield, 835.09 miles away.
It wasn’t me.
@KDemo
You wouldn’t fly/drive 835.09 miles to go shopping?
I’d say I’m disappointed, but I’d be more disappointed if you actually DID make that trip.
@PlacidPenguin
That’s a long way to go. Perhaps @kdemo’s range is limited to around 834.974621 miles for shopping trips.
I should stop at Aldi’s tonight but no it was not me. I do know there is at least one other person in my county from the map.
@speediedelivery Since when could we click on the map to zoom in?
@bdb I am not sure exactly but near the beginning in July 2014.
@speediedelivery I never ever thought to click on the map. Either a neat hidden feature, or poor interface design - take your pick!
It was me.
I know there’s other people from meh in my county because of the sales map… But I never hear anyone on the forums speaking about where I live.
@RiotDemon
I like living in a state of denial.
@PlacidPenguin

@narfcake @mfladd
It’s the greatest state in population, because it also includes everyone who is obsessed with the Patriots.
There’s a debate though if it should also include everyone who thinks the West Coast is the greatest, or at the minimum, those people who live in California.
@PlacidPenguin I live in a state of confusion, so we might be neighbors.
@PlacidPenguin
De Nile
@f00l
Perfect timing.
I live 863.7 miles from the closest Aldi.
@daveinwarsh
That’s at least 10 miles too far to go. At least.
@daveinwarsh - Therefore, you live 28.61 miles farther north than me.
@KDemo As you live much closer, could you do the next beer run to Aldi?
@daveinwarsh - You betcha!
There are two Aldo’s “opening soon” in our area, so unless you and I were wearing hard hats, not me.
Haven’t been to one in a couple of weeks but we like Aldi and get a lot of stuff there. Special item times like Christmas and their 2-3 times per year German food specials are awesome. But we buy the plastic bags each time because they’re nice and large and useful for things so I’ve never had a Meh bag there.
it was me, i live in MI
does that seem about right?
@Yoda_Daenerys I never saw an Aldi in MI - just this.
@compunaut that’s my shit. Do you live close?
@compunaut There is one in Cadillac, at least
@gammonater Nah; was on a week-long business trip to Jackson not long ago. Spent a couple hrs after work every day at Grand River.
My brother lives in Portage, tho
I used my Fuku bag in Trader Joe’s tonight, which is owned by the same company as Aldi. Nobody commented on the bag. Fools.
@heartny
I think the problem is you expected someone to comment.
Don’t.
@PlacidPenguin I was hoping that someday someone would comment, but sadly they never do as many times as I have used it in TJ’s or Whole Paycheck. Maybe I set the bar too high and should try Dollar Tree?
@heartny
It’s like seeing a Leprechaun. Not something you plan for.
@heartny
I was thinking of wearing my Meh shirt from December and going to a thrift store to look for something.
Of course, I would be hoping to get a comment though.
But… Now I either can’t be hoping that, or I need to delay going until my expectations change.
@f00l
I saw one riding a unicycle on Tuesday though.
@f00l Gotcha. I’ve been looking for a pot of meh at the end of the shopping aisle. I need to stop.
@heartny
A slightly optimistic rule of thumb, but I buy into it:
Don’t look for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
Just look for the rainbow.
@heartny
The status of it is iffy here in the United States
@heartny Trader Joe’s is owned by a different company named Aldi.
Years ago the brothers who owned the company split and became Aldi North and Aldi South. The Aldi stores in the U.S. are owned by Aldi Sud, while Trader Joe’s is owned by Aldi Nord.
So, no, Aldi in the U.S. and Trader Joe’s are not related.
@craigthom
I have heard that the two family branches have some unhappy relations between them, at times. Is that true?
@f00l All I know is they are separate companies.
The Mikkeller vs Evil Twin feud is more fun.
@craigthom Didn’t realize there was a feud there. Is it based around who can make the stupider beer? Because I think ET takes the cake…
@brhfl https://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/03/30/magazine/a-fight-is-brewing.html
I think they both were at the same beer festival in New England last year. I haven’t heard if they talked.
They are twin brothers and sell weird beer, although neither had a brewery.
@brhfl I haven’t had any Mikkeller beer, at least in the two-and-a-half years I’ve been playing Untappd, but I have had seven from Evil Twin.
I miss Aldi! Moved out from the Midwest a couple years ago tho, so it wasn’t me.
Haven’t been in one in years. So not me.
@f00l They have good cheap pineapples. And avocados. Where do buy yours?
@compunaut
Just whatever grocery I’m around when I get a craving. And currently I don’t cook so much. That comes and goes in my life.
Aldi’s is fine, it’s just not the block I’m normally on.
PS do visit the big grocery on the west side of La Gran Plaza sometime. It’s fun.
@compunaut That made me laugh - my mother pretty much always has a pineapple because ‘it was a dollar at Aldi’s!!! [sic]’
Aldi stores are just great! Awesome selection of unique food items. German chocolate especially! And fantastic nuts and cheese. Shame their working hours are so inconvenient. Who closes at 8 pm this day and age? Make it 24/7, the world should never sleep. The night is alive!
@serpent Who doesn’t have free bags? Who has a deposit on shopping carts? Aldi has many quirks.
@serpent 9pm closing over here. For 24/7, I go to WinCo.
@craigthom I’m in California. What free bags?
The cart deposit is different, but it works great at keeping all the errant carts out of the parking lot left by
lazyinconsiderate folks that won’t walk an extra 50’ to a cart return.That said, I will admit to having used the extra space next to a double-parking douchebag as a cart return too.

Canada?
@narfcake Here they have absolutely insane working hours. I do understand, that they save on that, but it’s very inconvenient for late-night shoppers, like us. At least they’re not closed on Sundays, like some other grocery stores and Chick-fil-a.
@PlacidPenguin A bit like Canada in terms of climate, but bigger and at the other side of the globe.
@serpent
Oh.
@serpent I didn’t say anything was wrong with no free bags; it’s just one of the things that sets Aldi apart in most of the country. I use canvas bags at all grocery stores (and others, although sometimes it confuses them). Besides the ecological thing, they are sturdier and hold more.

@craigthom Well, yeah, they are different, that’s for sure! But so much of what they sell is not available at Walmart or Target, that it’s worth the extra step. Agreed on bags!
Yep, that wasn’t meant to be a hard riddle
@craigthom I read once that Aldi charges for bags because they dont want to mark up their prices. Most other stores work the prices of bags into their food costs. Aldi claims they save you 1 to 5 cents by making you bring you own or ise the boxes. The shopping cart charge is so you put your cart back. Again a money saving idea. If you have to rent a cart you’re more likely to put it back and not leave it around. Saving their employees time and them money.
@serpent I understand the reasons they do those things; it’s that those set them apart from most grocery stores.
Wasn’t me. We have one about 10 miles away and we finally stopped in about 6 months ago. My husband hated it so we left. He thought it was a dirty mess. I didn’t agree but I never got to take my bags out as we didn’t buy anything.
Do you shop at the Aldi in Oldsmar, FL? If so, I’ve seen a cat walking around with a Fuku bag I just never mentioned it.
I wish I could rant all of my hatred for ALDI but I would break the internet. However I do stop there about once a quarter. Their garlic powder and onion powder are cheap. Was it a handsome fella? If so, it wasn’t me…
@ELUNO you know I think you are a cute goat.
@CaptAmehrican so many stars!!!
@ELUNO
Your spiders love ❤️ you.
I’m a big fan of Aldi’s produce. They don’t always have everything I’m looking for, but if they do it’s cheaper there than anywhere else.
@christinerenee It’s true, but we avoid some producer countries…
@compunaut
Which ones do you shy from?
@christinerenee I’m only a big fan if I can use it very quickly. Their produce doesn’t seem to last for me.
None in my state so it wasn’t me.
I’ve heard good things about the chicken salad there. The sandwich stuff, that is.
Also generic red bull.
I was in Aldi, but unfortunately am usually in a meeting at 8 eastern and in bed at 12AM eastern, so I never have successfully snagged a Fuku bag.
It was a huge deal when they opened an Aldi in my home town in Georgia. The parking lot was packed.
It’s a small town, though, and any new business is a big deal.
