@RiotDemon It was a serious question. But I wasn’t looking for an answer: I was looking for a response. And that’s what I’d like to see more of. It was getting to the point where the only way to get a real dialog going was to say something like, " Keep America Great" is a great slogan. Going over the many responses I see a lot of off the wall, where the hell did that shit come from. truly surreal stuff.
Elsewhere Anchises,
Fatherly and intent, was off in a deep green valley
Surveying and reviewing souls consigned there,
Those due to pass to the light of the upper world.
It so happened he was just then taking note
Of his whole posterity, the destinies and doings,
Traits and qualities of descendants dear to him,
But seeing Aeneas come wading through the grass
Towards him, he reached his two hands out
In eager joy, his eyes filled up with tears
And he gave a cry: “At last! Are you here at last?
I always trusted that your sense of right
Would prevail and keep you going to the end.
And am I now allowed to see your face,
My son, and hear you talk, and talk to you myself?
This is what I imagined and looked forward to
As I counted the days; and my trust was not misplaced.
To think of the lands and the outlying seas
You have crossed, my son, to receive this welcome.
And after such dangers! I was afraid that Africa
Might be your undoing.” But Aeneas replied:
“Often and often, father, you would appear to me,
Your sad shade would appear, and that kept me going
To this end. My ships are anchored in the Tuscan sea.
Let me take your hand, my father, O let me, and do not
Hold back from my embrace.” And as he spoke he wept.
Three times he tried to reach arms round that neck.
Three times the form, reached for in vain, escaped
Like a breeze between his hands, a dream on wings.

“Information Density” as phrase seems to call out to /giphy
/giphy information density
I wonder if there us an academic discipline that attempts to rigorously define and measure “information density”.
That idea amuses me a little. Because, unless the context of the result is sharply and rigorously limited every time, any answer given is both meaningless and erroneous.
Am too tired to calculate this. Is info really lost; or is the “missing info” automagically implied by other aspects of English?
I don’t know anything about comparative info utilities within different languages, except for mathematical English vs colloquial English.
And even those differences get all mysterious and squishy and inside-out on close examination.
The universe is full of black holes. Not all of them are within the boundaries of the physical universe(s). Many of them are inherent in language and logic.
“Logic” is such a fucker. You mess with it thinking to make things clear. And in the non-rigorously-examined-sense, often logic does just that.
And then if you really really start to look at it, and how it interacts with language, and what language is or isn’t (as far as we can perceive or understand at present), and what language could possibly be, defined in the sense that will cover the examples of all known and implied languages …:
/giphy oops
Thought I actually knew something, within my teeny brain.
I probably should have said ‘word density’, or some such. But I don’t mind ‘information density’ as a description of the difference between the left and right pages above. Latin really does get essentially the same message across in less space.
I’m guessing that ‘negative information density’ could be something of any length that is more lies than truth. But that’d be a judgement on the content of the info, so it shouldn’t count.
@f00l@UncleVinny LOL. Look at you, gettin’ on with your pedantic bad self.
So, does compression count, if we’re talking information density? Is Latin a form of linguistic compression, then? What about Chinese character ideograms? A “zip” file?
Novelty is overrated. People chase it around constantly. It causes a lot of problems. Take some satisfaction in what you have, maybe expend some effort maintaining it. Maybe try meditation.
@mehbee You need to put /giphy or /image or /youtube or /twitter (not sure on the last one). It’s a shorthand to search that site and pick one and put it in your post automagically. Search this site for “mehdown syntax” for the details.
@mehbee I didn’t upload them. The mehdown shortcuts do that. If you want to upload an image on a phone, turn your phone to landscape mode first, then hit reply. Or, check the setting for “desktop mode” in your browser.
@mehbee The shortcuts don’t do anything when you’re editing. After you post, the system processes it. It’s like a command, not an interactive widget. Try it.
@macromeh Mehrocco_Mole Please let us know how the destruction went and how they did that. That story should add entertainment to the forum. Oh and then don’t forget to blame the goat.
@mike808 You can do that yourself when the Nov nomination thread comes up. Anyone can nominate anyone except flask people and those who have already served (well unless they change their user name).
@mike808@kidsandliz I was at one time very active in the whole Scapegoat nomination/voting thing. But then I was accused of cheating. It got mean and nasty. I was accused of double voting using multiple accounts (Like nobody else here has a spouse that participates) I was so butt hurt that it’s been a couple years since I had much of anything to do with the scapegoat.
Besides, if elected I swear I will give you 30 days of extolling the virtues and successes of President Trump.
@mehcuda67 this gave me the creeps. Too lifelike. Turns out it’s a robot that has interchangeable heads for maintenance. Inspection cameras, pressure washing, etc.
@RiotDemon Yeah, it definitely has some of that alien probe thing going from War of the Worlds (Spielberg’s especially). I wish I could borrow one for Halloween.
just another day being behind the curve. I just discovered meh a few months ago, thought it was cool and now somebody comes along and says it’s getting boring. @coolpillows I was just trying to get some dialog going via a bit of friendly trolling. It probably would be more accurate to say, “This Forum is getting too calm.”
@RiotDemon - remind me if I forget. I took 2 photos of decorated cloth skulls for you I was going to post. @narfcake - I forgot to take one of the skeleton cat shirt for you. Oops. Sorry. Maybe someone on here is near a Buceesi’s or whatever the heck that store is called that has the worlds largest collection of junk food and weird crap (and good gas prices) can take a photo of it. It is in the halloween stuff in the center walkway area. If I was rich I would have bought this stuff for you guys.
You could prove yourselves wrong.

@UncleVinny
I can’t really have an opinion on this one, not having been present, and not personally knowing, f2f, anyone who was around for these events.
Also, I generally try not to get involved in “# of angels on the head of a pin” type discussions.
@f00l A sound policy.

I’m impressed.
Can you do that in Latin?
@f00l @UncleVinny what.
@f00l
@f00l PS: Check out how much information density is lost by losing declension!

@f00l @UncleVinny
So what might “negative information density” be defined as?
@mike808 @UncleVinny
At present, an authenticated example would be the contents of my poor alleged brain.
As for definitions; I’d have to google.
I’m sure some attentive/obsessive info-measurement jockey has come up with something.

@Kidsandliz Woops just noticed I posted the one twice. Here is the one I meant to also post:

I find nothing boring about this place but just to participate because I actually can

@DennisG2014 Probably it was a mic for Fox.
@mike808 yeah, I did that, the options come up if I’m on my tablet but not if I’m on my phone.

What? Not enough cat videos?
A former co-worker once told me of an old proverb in India: “Before the gods destroy you, they make you bored.”
@macromeh Mehrocco_Mole Please let us know how the destruction went and how they did that. That story should add entertainment to the forum. Oh and then don’t forget to blame the goat.
Huh, I just googled this and it turns out it is originally from Virgil’s Aeneid. I guess they read it in India.
@macromeh Yeah, because it’s not like the Romans could have possibly appropriated ideas from other cultures and claimed them as their own.
How 'bout some titties & beer?
@Narfcake
How about nominating @Mehrocco_Mole for scapegoat?
@mike808 You can do that yourself when the Nov nomination thread comes up. Anyone can nominate anyone except flask people and those who have already served (well unless they change their user name).
@Kidsandliz Just putting it out there.
Like my ex-wife. I’m here all week.
@mike808 No thank you.
@Mehrocco_Mole @mike808 HA! Like you have a choice about being nominated as goat? Just talk to all the ex-goats who tried to weasel out of it.
@Kidsandliz Shhh. Don’t ruin the Halloween “trick” he is about to receive… Or is it a “treat” to be appointed as the Meh scapegoat-of-the-month?
@aetris is the person who keeps telling local news stations that someone will hand out drugs to children on Halloween.
