I agree. I’ve only seen the Jim Carey one once and it doesn’t stick out in my mind as anything spectacular. I can definitely remember how the grinch stole Christmas a lot more and being the better of the two.
For me it’s tough. I enjoy both, not for the same reasons though. I’ve got nostalgia for the 1966 version because that’s what I watched as a kid. I did also enjoy the Carrey version just because of his commitment to the role. He was apparently taught how resist torture to get the whole Grinch outfit on and on top of that put in a good performance.
I guess I’d have to go with the 1966 version more as that’s peak Grinch for me.
couple weeks back, my GF’s Sister booked a “Photo Shoot” for the family… farmer her Hubby does business with, hangs up various backdrops around his barn, they play music, bring out a Clydesdale for certain pics, no photographer, you take your own pics…
…anyway… one of the backgrounds is Grinch themed, and they have one of their boys in a Grinch costume, to stand there “menacingly” behind you.
Her Sister had just shown her not quite 2 yr old the Original (1966) film that afternoon, and it was “too scary”…( Imagine what he’d of thought of Jim Carrey?)
Little Nugget* never took his eyes off the kid in the Grinch costume.
it was nigh on impossible to get him to look at the Camera as long as the green guy was around…
*nickname, not using children’s real names on the interwebs…
It’s easy for me to pick the animated original - it’s charming and just fits the season better in my opinion. The remake is great, but it wouldn’t exist without the first one! That said, Jim’s performance is great. “You’re an idiot!” gets me every time.
I’m going to have to go with “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” on this one. It’s clearly the better of the two.
@ExtraMedium Good choice…I uh… hadn’t thought that through.
@ExtraMedium You’re wrong! Clearly “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is superior!
@blaineg I’m not saying I’m other opinions aren’t valid, I just prefer the pace of the other.

The non animated one has the who’s having a key party. That has to count for something.

Grinch vs Grinch is a dead-heat tie. No losers here.
Yes.
The book was better.
I have to go with the original animated one since I never had the urge to see the new one.
No competition. Boris Karloff and Tony the Tiger FTW!
And it’s always better when it’s on TV and not DVD or on demand.
@ybmuG The 1953 B&W original or the 1961 color remake?
@werehatrack well i did see it first for many years in b&w, but that was the tv. Never heard of a b&w version. Only the 1966 color. The book was 1957
@ybmuG Huh. Yeah, it was 1966. I’d have sworn there was an earlier one, but I guess I’m wrong.
