Fuckity fuckity fuckity fuckity fuck. I have friends in two different states who are seriously starting the process of moving to Ireland. I’m looking into whether I may have derived dual citizenship in another country. I never thought that those genealogy seminars and classes on the topic would be useful.
@OldCatLady I encourage them to move. Not from a hostile place, either. My coworker wants America to be a socialist wonderland. I said… Why make himself miserable? He should skip to the end result and move to some socialist country. He’ll be happier. I won’t even say one of the many failing socialist countries, he can pick his favorite one. He says there are no opportunities there. Surely not related.
Ireland’s EU. For the moment, anyway. So if you can get into Ireland and gain residency, and you’ve got $$$, you can transition to the Mediterranean or something. Can’t you?
If you wanna lively cheaply in warm weather, check out Belize.
@f00l Money certainly would go further in Central/South America than Europe. . . there are many more laws/red tape in regards to purchasing property in most of the EU compared to the US. Having Irish citizenship would help. . .
@f00l One friend’s husband is eligible for dual citizenship, and they would be living with his family. Also they have money, and are writers. (I do have some nice friends.)
@OldCatLady Hope you realize just how insane every other countries immigration policy is. The US has one of the most relaxed laws in the world. A lot of the times all you would need is to be from a country that was under dictatorship rule.
@Thumperchick I was close to Ireland for a year working in NW Scotland. As @jrwofuga said it rains a lot. I think we went 82 days in a row with rain at one point. Very beautiful though. With all that rain everything is really green.
@OldCatLady My mother was born in Holland. My father’s father was born in Norway. They have appointments with the respective consulates in Chicago in January. Based on initial inquiries, there should be no issues for them obtaining dual citizenship. Just in case.
What about you? If they have dual, can you get it?
Don’t have that option unless some country will allow going back many generations.
One family strain was here before 1727. I think I can track into the prev century if if I poke around. Does that mean I can apply for dual British citizenship?
@f00l Nope. Ireland started issuing passports if you had one grandparent born there, several years ago. It became an enormous tourist attraction, too. I helped several people with their documentation.
@compunaut There’s an epidemic of the ‘just in case’ syndrome going around. I have a little problem since my father was born in Germany, but at the time he was born, the Kaiser was still ruler. I’m working on my Welsh grandfather’s documents now. His father was a Williams, his mother was a Jones… The records are a little spotty, too.
It’s kinda shitty that some faithless electors decided to not follow the rules.
In Washington state, four of the Democrat electors voted for a candidate other than Clinton. That’s pitiful.
Democrats who voted to have electors represent them in Washington State didn’t cast votes for Colin Powell or someone named Faith Spotted Eagle.
The election process, whether a person likes it (usually the winning party) or hates it (the losing party), has been set up to work fairly good. The pendulum will swing the other way & the system will work again!
I’m really not a fan of Trump, but he’s to be the president and we need to hope things work out. There’s been some really shitty presidents in the past & America survived. This is still the greatest country to live in.
Just my opinion… I bet a few disagree… That’s America!
@daveinwarsh Yes, we’ve had some shitty presidents. Going on 6 decades, I’ve never had to hope that one is just shitty. Trump has fascist tendencies. I can only hope what is left of our democratic institutions can step up and make it so he’s just shitty. So far I see little hope in that: the FBI put its thumb on the scales for one party over another and the GOP is now trying to sweep a foreign power’s attempted interference in our democracy under the rug because it benefits them.
@TimWalter Agreed. I never thought I’d hope for ‘incompetent’ and ‘weak’. What we have is ‘narcissistic, unhinged, ignorant and fantasy-prone’. And he looks like Raticate.
@TimWalter I’m a lot more optimistic I guess. He’s not even in office yet. Most of his cabinet is OK. The press (mainstream press that mostly admit to leaning liberal or Democrat) has had their fun and is sure to keep it up.
Obama has had quite a ‘pass’ from the press, in spite what he’s done (and not done) for national & international issues.
Sigh… I wish Rubio was who we were discussing…
@daveinwarsh You’ve been watching diffferent news than I have.
What happened to draining the swamp? He HIRED them. The big deal about Hillary and speeches and Goldman Sachs? He HIRED them.
And how many presidents have had their own translator? Kellyanne translates Trumpspeak to English. How many times have we heard her say “what he meant was…”
And with all of the right wing “news” stations, I don’t see where Obama got too many passes. And don’t forget all of the stuff they made up.
As for what Obama has done and not done, it’s pretty tough when you have to work with people who have no idea about compromise, who only look out for their own interests.
@daveinwarsh I guess I have to disagree about his cabinet appointments. It seems he chose the cabinet by Googling “Who would destroy (fill in the blank)” and then picking that person. For Education is a woman who has never been to public school, nor her kids, and runs an organization that wants to give education tax dollars to religious schools. For the EPA he’s chosen someone who is currently suing the EPA over clean water rules. For Energy he’s chosen someone who says he would eliminate the department altogether. For Treasury he’s chosen a guy whose nickname is “The Foreclosure King”. The list goes on…
Since you don’t seem to trust the “mainstream press”, where do you get your news? A liberal editorial page or not, the NYT and WaPo are still Best-in-World journalism.

@OldCatLady Have fun with that. . .did it for a year. I figure one Irish winter will send them back stateside.
@jrwofuga Worse than the northeast US?
@Thumperchick In fairness, it only rained twice. The first time was January through May and the second time was June through December.
In seriousness, yes, worse. For pure frigid coldness, probably not because so much is coastal, but the winters just brutal. Rain, wind, cold, no sun.
Maybe they’ll have good jobs though and can afford to buy a closet to live in around Dublin.

@OldCatLady
Pardon me. Had a momentary “Florence King seizure”.
@f00l Funny how that happens, and that you should ask.

@daveinwarsh I think it’s great that HRC was shown a second time just how weak a candidate they were. And on the day Clinton was impeached. gg

@thismyusername Zing!
@thismyusername Too many people just don’t care & don’t take the time to vote.

@lisaviolet Or to close gitmo.
