I have this beautiful Pioneer VSX-90 AV Receiver I bought from a site named “Meh”.
It is wonderful on the exceedingly rare days when the tablet app connects successfully to it. (That’s the only way I can get it to stream internet music.)
The HDMI ports are wonky as hell, rarely working for video. (Oh well, back to the TV for video input switching.)
But otherwise, the audio, including various Dolby Digital Surround Sound settings, is fairly nice.
@RedOak You should sell it on ebay. They’re going for $300+. If it is truly the POS you make it out to be.
I traded in my VSX-1121-K (Onkyo honored Pioneer’s warranty for a bad TI chip) for a refurb (B stock) VSX-90. No regrets and it’s been rock solid since. I don’t use a tablet, but I do use the internet radio occasionally. It wasn’t much different than the old one to setup. No problems with HDMI sourcing. I only have 2 - the TiVo and a PC that uses the front input. Maybe my setup/needs aren’t as complicated as yours. I never had high expectations for their custom app. Once I calibrated the sound, I only use the remote to change sources between thr TiVo and the PC. I programmed the TiVo remote for volume and on/off.
@RedOak Do you use the onscreen menus? I did my setup using that. Just wondering what you need the app to fiddle with all the time. Once you dial it in, you shouldn’t need to do anything more than switch inputs. And I agree, the remote is a hot mess. Far too complicated. Get a Harmony or other unifying remote instead. The Pioneer remote ain’t it, and neither is the app.
@RedOak You do know that your BluRay pkayer can play DVDs, right? One less device to deal with from an HDMI source perspective. I can’t remember the last time I played a DVD or BluRay. I ripped all mine and watch the one DVD my wife exercises to from the PC or Plex if we dont want to change the source (and not have to use the Pioneer remote).
Of course. We don’t even have a plain old DVD player hooked up. Those players are in mothballs in a corner of the basement. Perhaps you misinterpreted “DVR” as “DVD”?
Yah, have considered setting up a Plex server and running it thru either our Rokus or Fire TV. But a good portion of our discs are Blu-Ray and not looking forward to the storage needs…

In related news, my 2017 VIZIO E series now supports AirPlay in addition to the previously supported SmartCast (Chromecast) capably. VIZIO has been incrementally rolling out firmware updates to select models to add this capability.
There are frequently dirt cheap digital video deals in iTunes which I’ve passed on because I don’t own an Apple TV device. Now I’m able to cast from my phone or iPad and take advantage of those deals. I’m generally not a fan of purchasing DV after being burned by the UltraViolet shuttering, but some of the iTunes deals are cheaper than renting.
@RedOak I linked my UV account to all other available services as soon as I received their notification. Several movies in my library show up but can’t be accessed from the other services. For example Cowboys and Aliens or Dazed and Confused. They are listed in my library with a note “Content unavailable”.

I can watch Dazed and Confused on all three. I am not certain where I bought it, but it was likely the $7.88 bin at Walmart (I miss that), which means I entered it through Vudu. But it shows up in my Amazon and Movies Anywhere libraries, and it will play in all three.

@djslack Great points. The SiliconDust devices, for about the same prices, appear to be a better option. Even with the required $35 annual subscription. Less than three bucks a month for unlimited devices and a two week program guide.
I’m using mine in AP mode in my shop along with a pair of powerline network adapters to bring the internet out from the house and give me consistent wifi, and so far it works great.
“Normal” mode for this would be as a repeater, where it goes in an area where you have WiFi coverage and broadcasts it out one hop further, and for that all you need is a power outlet and some WiFi signal.
Aldi had this great handheld massager for $12.99 and it is well worth the money. Before y’all have dirty thoughts, I made the purchase to massage my ankle because of the bursitis and it seems to help

The good news is you can switch between plans at any time. With our current flexible plan, it should max-out at $135, so we’re only talking about saving $15 if we use a ton of data. If you have 4 or more people on your plan, it gets more reasonable at only $45 per line. Only other bonus I see with the Unlimited is the 100GB online storage with Google One.

@cinoclav@therealjrn When I moved her here mom’s number one priority was to get a bank account so she could order new checks. Ordering those checks was the key focus of her efforts for days. Once she decided which bank she wanted to use, she called me at work and asked me to come home and drive her to the bank. “I’ve got to get new checks!” It was so important for her to have checks I left the office at lunchtime.
I have no idea what she pays for with those checks, but she wouldn’t rest until she had some. I suppose in my generation it would be like not having a credit card, or maybe EFT transactions. I would be unable to pay for anything in my day-to-day existence.
If I take her to the supermarket and she whips out her checkbook to pay, I might be leaving her there.

I do still have one school loan payment that I have to send a check for monthly. If I hadn’t had access to ordering checks through Costco and BJ’s, I would’ve likely scanned through those same mailers just to see what they offered. I’m pretty well set until I die with this current order. Btw, I got these and I’m kind of loving them.
@cinoclav@sammydog01@therealjrn I used my last paper check maybe 8 years ago to pay my annual property tax. That was the only thing I wrote a paper check for in the prior many years. I intended to order more, but that same year the county began accepting ACH transactions for tax payments, so I haven’t had a need for one since.
My business is a different matter entirely. I write a few dozen checks per month, mostly to a few non-employees and consultants, printers, and a few other suppliers. I order business checks in 500 count reams and have to reorder once or twice per year.

@sammydog01 Only way to back it up on iOS is to make an iTunes backup. There are ways to backup the package for Android. Also be sure to grab the SDK if you might ever be interested in fussing with the programability stuff.

I have this beautiful Pioneer VSX-90 AV Receiver I bought from a site named “Meh”.
It is wonderful on the exceedingly rare days when the tablet app connects successfully to it. (That’s the only way I can get it to stream internet music.)
The HDMI ports are wonky as hell, rarely working for video. (Oh well, back to the TV for video input switching.)
But otherwise, the audio, including various Dolby Digital Surround Sound settings, is fairly nice.
Good thing I only paid $5 for it.

I traded in my VSX-1121-K (Onkyo honored Pioneer’s warranty for a bad TI chip) for a refurb (B stock) VSX-90. No regrets and it’s been rock solid since. I don’t use a tablet, but I do use the internet radio occasionally. It wasn’t much different than the old one to setup. No problems with HDMI sourcing. I only have 2 - the TiVo and a PC that uses the front input. Maybe my setup/needs aren’t as complicated as yours. I never had high expectations for their custom app. Once I calibrated the sound, I only use the remote to change sources between thr TiVo and the PC. I programmed the TiVo remote for volume and on/off.
@mike808 who knows what the official status of my VSX-90 is. It was in an IRK so it is hard to complain to Pioneer-Onkyo.
I don’t really have an issue with the app - if the VSX-90 actually worked, I’d prefer its all out in the open interface to the sloppy remote.
Keeping the eyes open for estate sales finds in the meantime… I
@RedOak Do you use the onscreen menus? I did my setup using that. Just wondering what you need the app to fiddle with all the time. Once you dial it in, you shouldn’t need to do anything more than switch inputs. And I agree, the remote is a hot mess. Far too complicated. Get a Harmony or other unifying remote instead. The Pioneer remote ain’t it, and neither is the app.

That’s the big problem with this “AV” receiver. No “V”. The video portion of the HDMI barely works. 1 out of 20 times I get “on screen”.
The setup app - actually a web page on my iPad - worked fairly well.
And my Blu-Ray and DVRs are unusable thru the receiver since those HDMI ports virtually never work.
I use the receiver for audio only by back-feeding audio from the TV HDMI.
And I have Roku and Fire TV hooked up via the TV.
BTW, we cut the cable 25 years ago. We get something like 50-60 channels via over the air.
I use the app to control surround sound audio profiles depending on source. And to control Internet radio. While I’m in there, on/off and volume.
The only buttons on that crappy remote that ever get touched are Power and +/- Volume.
So yah, watching estate sales closely…
@RedOak You do know that your BluRay pkayer can play DVDs, right? One less device to deal with from an HDMI source perspective. I can’t remember the last time I played a DVD or BluRay. I ripped all mine and watch the one DVD my wife exercises to from the PC or Plex if we dont want to change the source (and not have to use the Pioneer remote).

In related news, my 2017 VIZIO E series now supports AirPlay in addition to the previously supported SmartCast (Chromecast) capably. VIZIO has been incrementally rolling out firmware updates to select models to add this capability.
There are frequently dirt cheap digital video deals in iTunes which I’ve passed on because I don’t own an Apple TV device. Now I’m able to cast from my phone or iPad and take advantage of those deals. I’m generally not a fan of purchasing DV after being burned by the UltraViolet shuttering, but some of the iTunes deals are cheaper than renting.

Did you ignore their warnings to be sure your content was linked to another service like VUDU?
I can still get to all my Ultraviolet content via VUDU. Perhaps I’ve misunderstood.
@RedOak I linked my UV account to all other available services as soon as I received their notification. Several movies in my library show up but can’t be accessed from the other services. For example Cowboys and Aliens or Dazed and Confused. They are listed in my library with a note “Content unavailable”.

I’m using mine in AP mode in my shop along with a pair of powerline network adapters to bring the internet out from the house and give me consistent wifi, and so far it works great.
“Normal” mode for this would be as a repeater, where it goes in an area where you have WiFi coverage and broadcasts it out one hop further, and for that all you need is a power outlet and some WiFi signal.
Aldi had this great handheld massager for $12.99 and it is well worth the money. Before y’all have dirty thoughts, I made the purchase to massage my ankle because of the bursitis and it seems to help

Less than $2k for all three pieces including sales tax at Lowe’s. Would have been well over $3k at Costco.
My mom insists on Whirlpool and rejects LG and Samsung. Probably a generational thing. Those are name brands which, to her, are relatively unknown newcomers. She’s used to Whirlpool, Maytag, et alia.

With only 2 people on my plan, however, this would be $60 per person and video may stream at a lower resolution than the flexible plan. We’ve been using more data recently due to wife not using company wifi and me streaming amazon music in the car, but we’re not quite to the tipping point where it would be worth it to switch. The good news is you can switch between plans at any time. With our current flexible plan, it should max-out at $135, so we’re only talking about saving $15 if we use a ton of data. If you have 4 or more people on your plan, it gets more reasonable at only $45 per line. Only other bonus I see with the Unlimited is the 100GB online storage with Google One.

@cinoclav @therealjrn When I moved her here mom’s number one priority was to get a bank account so she could order new checks. Ordering those checks was the key focus of her efforts for days. Once she decided which bank she wanted to use, she called me at work and asked me to come home and drive her to the bank. “I’ve got to get new checks!” It was so important for her to have checks I left the office at lunchtime.
I have no idea what she pays for with those checks, but she wouldn’t rest until she had some. I suppose in my generation it would be like not having a credit card, or maybe EFT transactions. I would be unable to pay for anything in my day-to-day existence.
If I take her to the supermarket and she whips out her checkbook to pay, I might be leaving her there.

I do still have one school loan payment that I have to send a check for monthly. If I hadn’t had access to ordering checks through Costco and BJ’s, I would’ve likely scanned through those same mailers just to see what they offered. I’m pretty well set until I die with this current order. Btw, I got these and I’m kind of loving them.

I intended to order more, but that same year the county began accepting ACH transactions for tax payments, so I haven’t had a need for one since.
My business is a different matter entirely. I write a few dozen checks per month, mostly to a few non-employees and consultants, printers, and a few other suppliers. I order business checks in 500 count reams and have to reorder once or twice per year.

I guess I’m glad I worked on the house instead. I got all the new blinds hung, new washer, dryer and fridge set up, cleaned up some messes the painters left behind. Today I had a giant pile of boxes and mailing envelopes on the porch. It was like Christmas!
@tinamarie1974 It will be nice for my mother to have her own place and not have to sleep in the RV in my back yard anymore. And I am looking forward too. Having my house and peace and privacy back.
I know my puppies will be glad when my mom’s dog (I call her “the moose” isn’t constantly bullying them too. The new house is only around the corner about a three minute walk, so they’ll be able to walk over there with me for occasional play dates, then we’ll be able to leave when the moose gets too aggressive.

@ruouttaurmind @sammydog01 I understand that. Space is important. My parents live about 15 minutes away by car, close enough that I can get to them if needed but not too close.
Earlier this year they had some work done on their house and moved in with me for a few months. We made it work, but it was nice when they moved home.
