@RedOak You should sell it on ebay. They’re going for $300+. If it is truly the POS you make it out to be.
I traded in my VSX-1121-K (Onkyo honored Pioneer’s warranty for a bad TI chip) for a refurb (B stock) VSX-90. No regrets and it’s been rock solid since. I don’t use a tablet, but I do use the internet radio occasionally. It wasn’t much different than the old one to setup. No problems with HDMI sourcing. I only have 2 - the TiVo and a PC that uses the front input. Maybe my setup/needs aren’t as complicated as yours. I never had high expectations for their custom app. Once I calibrated the sound, I only use the remote to change sources between thr TiVo and the PC. I programmed the TiVo remote for volume and on/off.
@RedOak Do you use the onscreen menus? I did my setup using that. Just wondering what you need the app to fiddle with all the time. Once you dial it in, you shouldn’t need to do anything more than switch inputs. And I agree, the remote is a hot mess. Far too complicated. Get a Harmony or other unifying remote instead. The Pioneer remote ain’t it, and neither is the app.
@RedOak You do know that your BluRay pkayer can play DVDs, right? One less device to deal with from an HDMI source perspective. I can’t remember the last time I played a DVD or BluRay. I ripped all mine and watch the one DVD my wife exercises to from the PC or Plex if we dont want to change the source (and not have to use the Pioneer remote).
@RedOak FYI, it’s not just Panasonic. Several brands are affected.
In related news, my 2017 VIZIO E series now supports AirPlay in addition to the previously supported SmartCast (Chromecast) capably. VIZIO has been incrementally rolling out firmware updates to select models to add this capability.
There are frequently dirt cheap digital video deals in iTunes which I’ve passed on because I don’t own an Apple TV device. Now I’m able to cast from my phone or iPad and take advantage of those deals. I’m generally not a fan of purchasing DV after being burned by the UltraViolet shuttering, but some of the iTunes deals are cheaper than renting.
@RedOak I linked my UV account to all other available services as soon as I received their notification. Several movies in my library show up but can’t be accessed from the other services. For example Cowboys and Aliens or Dazed and Confused. They are listed in my library with a note “Content unavailable”.
@RedOak@ruouttaurmind Oh yeah! I’m a fan of Daniel Craig. I guess I’d never seen (or remembered I’d seen) him until Cowboys and Aliens. I ended up with that movie in my AMZN library somehow. I literally don’t remember buying it but then I used to drink, so…
I can watch Dazed and Confused on all three. I am not certain where I bought it, but it was likely the $7.88 bin at Walmart (I miss that), which means I entered it through Vudu. But it shows up in my Amazon and Movies Anywhere libraries, and it will play in all three.
Not the greatest transfer, based on the sprocket hole shake during the title.
I don’t recall the final verdict on this honey, but Woot has the raw rapsflower honey for $6, plus a coupon code for $2 off $10 or more from the Got Groceries selection. So two jars for ten bucks if that’s your thing.
@JnKL I have been doing RICE and I saw a Dr Tue and went for an ultrasound yesterday. Waiting on the results, but the tech marked SOMETHING kinda backward “C” shaped on one of the images so I think it is bad news
Worst case I will have to wear a boot, and it is not one I will be excited about!
Fantagraphics.com: 25% off your entire order with discount code D23 on checkout (requires a free-to-join D23 membership. Or maybe not. Try the code and see.
Enjoy classic graphic literature like Ruppert and Mulot’s Portrait of a Drunk or The Perineum Technique or Richard Sala’s self-indulgent portfolio Violent Girls, all while thumbing your nose at the Disney juggernaut, knowing Walt’s ashes would be churning in his tomb if he was aware you were using a Disney sponsored discount code to purchase such pulp tripe.
From the product description: each kit includes four Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 bulbs, one Hue Bridge, ethernet cable, power adapter, manual, and three-year warranty.
Although the product image shows only two bulbs, the description indicates you’ll receive four bulbs. If it does include four bulbs, it’s a great bargain. If only two bulbs are included, it’s still a decent deal. Make your purchasing decision accordingly!
That’s a buck less than the Amz deal posted last month. So if you didn’t order then, now’s the time. If you did order then and like them, get another set. Since it’s a Garage Sale item, it’s likely they’ll sell out in short order.
It’s probably never a bad time to buy the little lady in your life a nice “for-no-reason” present. You do know, too, that Winter is coming, so you men can demonstrate awareness to your surroundings as well with this fine gift!
@ruouttaurmind I betcha even with a bottle of sunscreen that large, I would still end up sunburned in the middle of winter in New England – Even bundled up in winter gear!!! Being bright white isn’t even good camouflage for me… since I then turn bright red when exposed to sunlight! sigh…
@ruouttaurmind They’re taking an additional 40% off to total 60% off the original MSRP price.
Translation: It was only 20% off to start with. Take another “extra” 40% off to get 60% off total. They are $37.50 MSRP. 20% off ($7.50) price is $30. “Extra” 40% is $15 more off the 20% off price ($30), and you end up with $15.
Buy Meh shirts instead and you will get 100% off the woot price!
@RiotDemon@ruouttaurmind swwweett… My son’s laser engraver uses svgs… Which you can get on any freebie on the website…so everytime I get one, I try to remember to get the svg also silhouette has a 3d printer too…but my boys scoffed at the specs…
Reporting in about a recent sock purchase from Woot. I was the first AND last sucker to buy the one pack Woot had for sale. https://sport.woot.com/offers/head-moisture-wicking-socks-10-pairs-9
These must be some kind of special socks…they came in a sturdy shipping box nestled in with 4 big green bags of air, enclosed in a thick clear poly bag. I’m happy to report my socks arrived in perfect shape and none of them appear to have been broken in shipping.
@mikibell The linked article suggests new Echo devices are coming soon. I guess I shouldn’t have been dragging my feet about listing all the NIB Echos I have sitting in my storage closet. Three 3rdG Dots, two 2ndG Echos, a Spot and a 1stG Show, all brand new in their sealed packaging. Now the value of those devices is about to drop by 50%.
@djslack Great points. The SiliconDust devices, for about the same prices, appear to be a better option. Even with the required $35 annual subscription. Less than three bucks a month for unlimited devices and a two week program guide.
I’m using mine in AP mode in my shop along with a pair of powerline network adapters to bring the internet out from the house and give me consistent wifi, and so far it works great.
“Normal” mode for this would be as a repeater, where it goes in an area where you have WiFi coverage and broadcasts it out one hop further, and for that all you need is a power outlet and some WiFi signal.
Any Costco members up in here wanna help a brother out? I need a refrigerator for mom’s new house.
This refrigerator is a member only item, but I’d like to check the price before pulling the trigger at Lowe’s.
Anyone with a Costco membership willing to login and check the price on this Whirlpool fridge for me? If it’s priced right, it would be worth buying a membership. There is a club only a mile from my house.
@ruouttaurmind@sammydog01 Make sure you’re comparing model to model. Costco price also includes delivery & takeaway, and the warranty extension (2yr vs 1yr) and if you really need it, the return policy is likely to be honored at Costco as well.
You also just missed their Labor Day sale (ended 9/9). I got an LG front load, best in class for $1,100, delivery tomorrow.
LG 4.5 CuFt Ultra Large Capacity TurboWash Washer in Graphite Steel - WM3770HVA, Item # 1083546
If it lasts 10 years like the one it is replacing (bearings going out), that’s $7/month for a top washer. The Samsungs were on sale, mostly, but I’m partial to LG and their ratings (including CR).
@mike808 Definitely is the same model numbers. Lowe’s also does free delivery/removal.
For the $1,000 price difference I could afford to replace something if it dies a painful, premature death within that 3 years of warranty Costco provides. Plus… I had a “10% off your total purchase” coupon from Lowe’s they sent when the deed was registered on the new house last week, so another $220 savings. Less than $2k for all three pieces including sales tax at Lowe’s. Would have been well over $3k at Costco.
My mom insists on Whirlpool and rejects LG and Samsung. Probably a generational thing. Those are name brands which, to her, are relatively unknown newcomers. She’s used to Whirlpool, Maytag, et alia.
@ruouttaurmind Nice on the 10% coupon. I can’t afford to buy a house every time I need a new appliance.
Also, a Lowe’s card is 5% every day, and 6-month 0% for anything over $1K (maybe $1,500?). And you can watch for/get GCs on sale (though Lowe’s and HD are rife with GC fraud, so deal with a reputable seller with guarantees, e.g. Raise).
The Tor.com eBook Club Selection for September 2019 is…

Factory Unlocked, Midnight Black, Condition is new, not refurbished.
This model was Samsung’s flagship phone just over a year ago, now priced about 1/3 the original offering. If I was shopping for a new phone, and didn’t despise Samsung, I would definitely bite on this. Dual sim, fully unlocked, top range features… a flagship phone for a midrange price. Wireless charging, water resistant, top of the line camera, and of course Samsung’s legendary QHD Super AMOLED “Infinity Display”.
Google Fi now offers an unlimited plan. https://fi.google.com/about/plans/
With only 2 people on my plan, however, this would be $60 per person and video may stream at a lower resolution than the flexible plan. We’ve been using more data recently due to wife not using company wifi and me streaming amazon music in the car, but we’re not quite to the tipping point where it would be worth it to switch. The good news is you can switch between plans at any time. With our current flexible plan, it should max-out at $135, so we’re only talking about saving $15 if we use a ton of data. If you have 4 or more people on your plan, it gets more reasonable at only $45 per line. Only other bonus I see with the Unlimited is the 100GB online storage with Google One.
I got a Fi service referral code for $20 in case anybody forgot and needs one.
@sammydog01@speediedelivery I want to buy one just because it’s a deal. But I’ve got so many SD cards and microSD cards and flash drives right now I don’t know what I’d do with it. I guess I could use it in my DVR to record more episodes of Big Bang Theory.
@ruouttaurmind@sammydog01 I am almost talked into it as a backup on DH computer files. He clicked something he shouldn’t have last week and thought he killed it. A bit of fiddling fixed it but I bet he hasn’t backed anything up recently. This might do nicely as a one shot here is your stuff if the computer does kick the bucket.
How much space do you need to do a start up? I should do that on one of the smaller ones I already own. Now this is starting to sound like work.
@ruouttaurmind@sammydog01@speediedelivery You people are not helping. I went back and tried, even though Fresh is not in my area, it gave me a link to the OOS sale at $14. So, in for something, maybe a cancellation? Maybe a good deal? More will be revealed, I chose the no-rush shipping for the digital credit.
@ruouttaurmind@therealjrn I use mine as USB-mounted file shares off my router as a cheap NAS for shared storage (daily wallpaper photos, latest versions of app installers, config files, etc.) for quick backups of something.
Router is an Asus RT-AC68R. Loved it stock, even more with Merlin.
Checkbook Cover for Women & Men (see? Men can carry a purple cover too!) is made from soft, durable material with “leather-like” quality and texture. It features Philippians 4:13 “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength”. Size: 6.9 x 3.8 x .6 Inches
@therealjrn I think I’ll just continue using the free cover that came with my checks. It protects them perfectly fine until I need that one check a month that I still have to write. I really do wonder though - are people still buying these things?!
@cinoclav@therealjrn When I moved her here mom’s number one priority was to get a bank account so she could order new checks. Ordering those checks was the key focus of her efforts for days. Once she decided which bank she wanted to use, she called me at work and asked me to come home and drive her to the bank. “I’ve got to get new checks!” It was so important for her to have checks I left the office at lunchtime.
I have no idea what she pays for with those checks, but she wouldn’t rest until she had some. I suppose in my generation it would be like not having a credit card, or maybe EFT transactions. I would be unable to pay for anything in my day-to-day existence.
If I take her to the supermarket and she whips out her checkbook to pay, I might be leaving her there.
@ruouttaurmind@therealjrn I actually just got new checks since I only have a few left from the last order (which is probably about 10 years old). I do still have one school loan payment that I have to send a check for monthly. If I hadn’t had access to ordering checks through Costco and BJ’s, I would’ve likely scanned through those same mailers just to see what they offered. I’m pretty well set until I die with this current order. Btw, I got these and I’m kind of loving them.
@cinoclav@sammydog01@therealjrn I used my last paper check maybe 8 years ago to pay my annual property tax. That was the only thing I wrote a paper check for in the prior many years. I intended to order more, but that same year the county began accepting ACH transactions for tax payments, so I haven’t had a need for one since.
My business is a different matter entirely. I write a few dozen checks per month, mostly to a few non-employees and consultants, printers, and a few other suppliers. I order business checks in 500 count reams and have to reorder once or twice per year.
@ruouttaurmind@tinamarie1974 I love Lego advent calendars and this is probably a good price if you really want one. They might get cheaper. Plus I have 7 advent calendars in my closet and one of the kids doesn’t like them.
@sammydog01 Only way to back it up on iOS is to make an iTunes backup. There are ways to backup the package for Android. Also be sure to grab the SDK if you might ever be interested in fussing with the programability stuff.
@ruouttaurmind I cancelled the hose splitter, the magicians hat, and the giant plushie. I actually only spent $35 plus tax today most of which was Vector. Also the panda bank and the wine thing. And every time I cancelled I put down “impulse buy” as the reason. I hope they don’t cancel my account.
This week is adding up. My trash bags came today. That was nice. I can use them to get rid of all the impulse buys I didn’t cancel.
@narfcake I refuse to buy any additional shirts until I wear all that I have at least once. If I was going to spend ten bucks on a shirt, it would be the boss ogre shirt at mediocritee.com. I’m pretty sure Delaney modeled the concept after me.

@ruouttaurmind@sammydog01 Yup, the deals were much better and easier to find before Rakuten bought and killed off Fatwallet. I’m not giving them the satisfaction for the little bit of savings compared to so much lost.
I often use ibotta. Basically get about 2% sometimes more back at Amazon and also money back on normal grocery shopping. It is not hige cash back but i get a little back every time . Disclaimer link below is my referral link
Rando BOCs at Woot today until 2PM CT. Deets here. I tried for a couple, but it’s too much effort for me. Maybe you’ll have better luck. I’ll just wait for the Twitch broadcast to waste the rest of my money.
@ruouttaurmind@sammydog01@tinamarie1974 Okay, I went back and canceled everything but the boring garage door opener (actually need/will need that for a property) the useful baking rack. :kicks toe in dirt: I think most 16 year-olds would appreciate cash more anyway. And the 11 year-old probably doesn’t know what a CD is…but damn $13 is a screaming deal. Not a deal if it isn’t going to be used though.
@therealjrn It’s looking like my order for the towels went through, despite the eternal VOP, but other than that I didn’t buy anything else today. I’ll be working on the new house tomorrow, so I’m going to miss that sale. No ISP over there yet, but I’ll try to remember to check in from my phone for any cant-miss bargains.
I just checked out the merch. It looks like I didn’t miss any amazing deals. I might have bought the Nerf shooter for my nephew, but nothing else looked all that interesting for me. I guess I’m glad I worked on the house instead. I got all the new blinds hung, new washer, dryer and fridge set up, cleaned up some messes the painters left behind. I think tomorrow morning I’m ready to start moving mom’s stuff over there.
@tinamarie1974 It will be nice for my mother to have her own place and not have to sleep in the RV in my back yard anymore. And I am looking forward too. Having my house and peace and privacy back.
I know my puppies will be glad when my mom’s dog (I call her “the moose” isn’t constantly bullying them too. The new house is only around the corner about a three minute walk, so they’ll be able to walk over there with me for occasional play dates, then we’ll be able to leave when the moose gets too aggressive.
@sammydog01 Today I received the 128GB flash drive from that Amz DotD, and the Wemo switch from Tuesday’s Twitch event. I should have three or four more items coming soon (including VECTOR!)
@therealjrn removable plate? Ugh. That’s the biggest let down I have about the popcorn stirrer I own. I didn’t know they made any with removable plates. Cleaning it is such a hassle when I make kettle corn.
Adding it to my watch list. I can’t justify the $30 for this now.
This is apparently in-store only (also not sure if limited to my local store), but Hobby Lobby has the We R Memory Keepers Supreme Ruler discounted to $4.99 (normally $19.99). I picked one up last week; the local store still has a few left.
Login to your AMEX account and check your AMEX Rewards offers for the offer “Get 30% back, up to $100 at Select Technology Providers”. This is an actual statement credit, not earned points, so the true value is up to $100.
Not super heavy duty, but suitable for most homeowners. Maybe even a great craft cabinet?
The power strip with USB charger nearly pushed me over the top, but I’m on the fence with this one. I still haven’t unpacked the Kobalt chest/cabinet that damn @djslack made me buy last month. But this might be an ideal storage option for some of my power tools, or my automotive tech stuff.
27 in. W x 19 in. D
1 drawer, 2 door storage
50 lb. rated ball-bearing drawer slides
Power strip with USB and drawer liners
Minimal assembly required: only casters, handle, and hinged pegboard
@OldCatLady It’s just too exhausting to shop Morningsave. Like Woot and Groupon Goods, there are just too many items. Plus, a plethora of stuff for the ladies, and not a huge assortment for the menfolk.
@ruouttaurmind and it is not especially organized so you can easily find things. It’s like there is a nearly random collection of stuff that they then tossed up in the air and where ever it landed is the order it appears on the website. Although because most of what is on there I’d never buy in a million years even if I had money, I don’t really care all that much that the site is so incredibly disorganized. I guess meh doesn’t care about that since clearly they are selling the crap that is on there.
Migardener has a grab bag of 30 different types of seeds packs for 10 bucks up. It is a great deal as seeds often cost 3 bucks per package. I ordered some. I figure I am likely to get at least some stuff I want to grow and who knows on the other things.
