The Soaps & Deodorants of Meh
6Mehers, I love soap. Being progressive people, I assume you all love a good soap and deodorant too. I quit using aluminum filled deodorants a couple years ago and I haven’t looked back. This has lead to hippy soaps. I love me some hippie soap. WAY. TOO. MUCH. Here’s my current rig:
SOAP
DEODORANTS
Current:
Back Ups:
(This was my first hippie deodorant years ago)
BONUS SECTION: SHAMPOOS
BONUS 2: BEARD OIL
(Stuff’s not bad, but not the best I’ve used)
What’s your set up like?

Basically the cheapest stuff I can find. I’m cheap. Except deiderant, once I find some Gillette gel stuff that works really well for me, I’ve never tried anything else.
@luvche21 I suggest Thai Crystal to everyone. It’s basically just a stick of salt. Works wonders. You can put it anywhere stinky.
Whoa, and I totally tried to type deodorant 5 times, then once my phone finally figured out my swipe, it changed it back to deiderant???
Any better phone keyboards than google’s version?
@luvche21 I prefer SwiftKey.
I go back and forth with Guv’ner. I use it, but not everyday. I wish it was unscented.
BTW, I started shopping at Lush a few months ago and have found some amazing items. There are so many products for men, hopefully more men will give the store a try. One thing that turned me off for so long was the “Cosmetics” in the Lush name. Yes, there are cosmetics, but there are tons of items for guys there.
@conandlibrarian I am head over heels for Lush’s deodorants and beard cleanser. I prefer the stick deodorants, but my wife bought Guv’ner without realizing it was powder only. Still like it a lot. I love the smell, but hate the mess.
@vanslaterco Do you purchase anything from the “Dirty” line? I love the body wash, and solid perfume. In the freezer I have the “Woosh” shower jelly. I am so excited to try it, although the jelly thing is really odd, haha.
@conandlibrarian Not really. If I lived closer to one, I would probably experiment more. I think my wife uses a Dirty body wash, I think.
@conandlibrarian Their big sea salt shampoo is pretty amazing. It does a great job cleaning your scalp.
@galmaegi
I will have to stop by Lush during lunch and purchase some. I don’t know if I have ever spent that much on shampoo before, but if it works well then it is worth it.
Thanks for the tip!
@conandlibrarian Yup, that’s why I don’t buy them any more. It works but pricey.
@conandlibrarian @galmaegi My wife and I use the term “Full Size Lush Soap Rich” when we talk about our financial goals.
I knew a guy who rubbed a sliced lemon under his arms every day. Seemed to work well enough.
Oh, and good old Dr Bronner’s. Have you ever really read that label? Pretty crazy stuff, but the soap is great.
Here’s a pdf: file:///C:/Users/J/Desktop/drbronner_32oz_Pep.pdf
@KDemo DANG, now that’s hippie dippy. As for the Bronner’s, it added 7 minutes to my showers getting through all of it. The grandson was interviewed on a WTF with Marc Maron. It runs in the family.
@vanslaterco So how does Bronners work? Splash it on hands & face w/ water? Does it lather at all?
@compunaut Ya, I just put it on my hand a lather up. It lathers pretty well considering it being all natural.
@compunaut You can also mop the floors with it, and clean your walls.
@vanslaterco You can brush your teeth with it!
@thismyusername I’LL NEVER GO BACK, MARK MY WORDS. But he is right. Toms is pretty much useless.
That Irish bar soap. Green or blue is fine.
Any Herbal Essence shampoo. The smellier the better.
No conditioner needed.
Pretty much anything from Cowshed. ‘…no parabens, petrochemicals, sulphates, animal ingredients (spare a little organic beeswax and wildflower honey), no artificial colours or fragrances and no animal testing - not now, not ever.’

@OldCatLady Do they make a beard cleaner?
@vanslaterco I’m not sure what some of the products do, but they have a nifty moustache wax, among other things. http://www.cowshed.com/men?___SID=U
This is the only shampoo I’ve found that keeps my scalp from itching (mild eczema and allergies)
Anti perspirant is mitchum. I can’t wear deodorant only.
If you love natural cleaners, my favorite spray cleaner is Method in the grapefruit scent.
/image method cleaner grapefruit
@RiotDemon I have this tea tree oil spray. I cannot believe how good it is. I didn’t expect it to be that great, but it’s as good as the best cleaner I’ve ever used.
/image grease lightening spray
@RiotDemon Took me all day, finally found the tea tree spray
@vanslaterco the thing about natural cleaners, it’s just chemicals that are derived in a different way and won’t usually kill you unless you ingest a lot of it. And they usually don’t burn your eyes or skin which is what I enjoy, especially because I have animals.
The Method one I linked smells so good that I wish they made the scent in everything. They make laundry, dish, and hand soap that I’ve tried in different scents. All great stuff. Usually easy to find.
The grapefruit scent is just so refreshing.
@vanslaterco I’ve been using this for months and not going to switch anytime soon.
@galmaegi Oh man, that Parlsey Plus… I’ve always said that if they made a cologne of it I’d wear the hell out of it.
@mossygreen new business opportunity!
Soap: I’d be using plain old bar soap (Ivory in the winter, some nice locally-made peppermint stuff in the summer) for everything if our well water wasn’t so damn hard - it doesn’t lather or rinse well with the amount of rust we get, even when we can be bothered to put salt in the water softener. So I go with the cheapest body wash that doesn’t smell like complete ass (and get the mentholated stuff in the summer). I really liked the Suave Heritage Mint and Sage stuff, but they seem to have discontinued it. Of course.
Deodorant: Unscented Mitchum gel. One of the few I don’t sweat through.
Hair: Nothing. I shave it down to stubble whenever it starts getting long enough for me to have to pay it any attention.
Beard: A bit of sandalwood beard oil (couldn’t tell you the brand off the top of my head) when it’s bushy enough to need a trim but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.
@dannybeans Your body wash is available. It’s worth the hunt. https://www.amazon.com/Suave-Heritage-Classic-Fresh-Ounce/dp/B00R0UK8J6
since nature has pretty much taken care of the hair for me,(Baldness runs on the mothers side my ass!), I use the same product to wash everywhere. Suave for men 2 in 1 Hair and Body.
and as for the deodorant, I know it will probably Kill me, but regular, Speed Stick in the “Fresh” scent. the good old white pasty stuff that leaves lines down the sides your black t shirts
Rosemary shampoo:

Donkey soap for my ridiculously dry skin:

Deodorant:
Whatever unscented stick is cheapest because I hate scented pits
My lady had some skin reactions to chemicals in mass market soaps and now swears by Melaleuca all-natural products. I know they’re kind of amwayish MLM bait but the products are in general very good. I just have their Alloy body washes and shampoos show up in my cabinet without any action on my part. The deodorant shows up too but I go get my own Degree as I sweat through the Alloy once it gets hotter than 85 degrees. It’s the time release kind that used to say silver ion on the packaging, works best of anything I’ve found although they must have had to downplay the silver ion stuff.
As an aside, the Melaleuca dishwasher pods (diamond brite, iirc) smell fantastic, just like lemon meringue pie. They’re great.
Soap: Irish Spring, or store-brand body wash
Shampoo: Store-brand Head & Shoulders
Deodorant: Old Spice, or Store-brand Equivalent
I also gave up using aluminum based deodorant. I found the solid mineral crystal too messy and had a very bad reaction to the liquid version. I had some success with Tom’s fragrance-free stick, but once the hot weather hit I found it ineffective. I decided to try a liquid spray that a friend’s Naturopathic doctor recommended called “Keeping Abreast of It.” It’s available at http://www.simplydivinebotanicals.com/keabofitdewi.html as well as on Amazon. I bought the 2 oz. bottle, which I thought was a little pricey, but finding that only 2 sprays under each pit are sufficient, it may last forever. I have a lot of chemical sensitivities, but so far haven’t had any reactions to this product. I must say I am pleasantly surprised at how effective this stuff is. I was out in 90+ degree weather and everything was sweating except my underarms! It has a light herbal scent, which is virtually undetectable after it dries. So, it would be good for guys too, if you don’t mind the name on the label.
tl;dr
@heartny the product says it’s not an anti perspirant and goes on to explain why those are bad for you.
Just curious if maybe you just don’t sweat that much under your armpits?
@RiotDemon I do sweat under my armpits, as evidenced by the failure of Tom’s (which was also ineffective at deodorizing, it’s main purpose). I know this stuff is only supposed to be a deodorant, but for whatever reason for me it seems to have an antiperspirant effect. I’m happy about that.
@Vanslaterco I thought this would be creepy… I thought it was an ad to smell like the meh people… I thought there was a deal of @moose’s musk or Eau de @hollboll… That would be creepy…
@sohmageek Luv me some @hollboll, but my twisted brain won’t let me stop thinking
Eww de Hollboll
@sohmageek You can smell like me if you want! Just use hippie deodorant, and you’ll be there in about 10 minutes in this heat.
@sohmageek just now seeing this. Not quite sure how to take it.
Soap - Costco brand stuff
Shampoo & conditioner - Nexxus
Deoderant - strongest stuff I can find
