The past came back to bother me
18I just got a Happy New Year’s message on Facebook messenger from someone I haven’t talked to in over 6 years. It was a guy that I met online, went to one coffee date with and found out he was way too hung up on his ex. We hung out a few times afterwards as friends and that was it.
It was weird. Especially because last week I was wondering what ever happened to him.
I was able to look at his profile and, wow, I’m so glad it never worked out. We couldn’t be any more different politically and there was just so many other posts that made me cringe.

I’ve been shot at before. There was no dodging, it happened too fast. But one bullet blew out the driver and passenger side windows. We were lucky neither of us were hit.
It turned out to be some stupid teenagers who had stolen daddy’s 30-06 rifle and were taking potshots at random people, cars and buildings.
That would have been a very stupid way to die.

@unksol They were juvies so I never found out. I was a high school senior myself so I didn’t have any idea about what I could do about it.
They had been traveling on foot up on an expressway under construction. The idiots were taking potshots at people in the houses that backed up to the grade too. They blew out the windows in a nearby business and shot at us just driving by. It was in the papers but no follow-up as to what happened to them.
Miraculously, and I don’t use that word often, nobody was hurt.
I got my car fixed and married my girlfriend after I graduated. I hadn’t thought about it in years.

Better they did that and no one got hurt than them showing up at the school I guess

I guess for me it would be the almost stroke, but frankly by comparison to almost getting shot and dating a guy you eventually got sent to jail, it seems like not such a big thing. I can assure you not nearly so scary (though definitely worse for my wife). And really cool to have been able to “share the experience” with a bunch of nutballs like you all. If ever there was a social network made for me, this would be it. Mostly.
@ybmuG curious: how do you almost have a stroke? I thought they were random blood clot in brain with no warning.
Asking for … well everyone who wants to avoid the stroke they are about to have.
@mollama @ybmuG not sure if it applies in this situation but if they catch it before it travels to the brain. I heard about it happening to athletes from time to time.
@elimanningface @mollama how they described it for me was either an actual stroke that the clot-busting medicine they gave me cleared up so that there are no permanent effects, or a TIA (transient ischemia attack), which is essentially the same thing (though a clinician in the room can likely explain the difference) where I guess the clot breaks up on it’s own. Either way, you get stroke symptoms for a period of time and then they clear up with no permanent damage to the brain cells.

I don’t usually think about them because I’ve had a car my entire adult life and never lived in a city. Uber wasn’t a thing in my college town till after I left and they don’t exist in the country.

And you are right no options in the country. I can’t even get food delivery beyond Dominos out here. Oh well, it is worth it for peace and quiet
@tinamarie1974 I only missed Uber by a few years lol. No one delivers and pizza hut is only ~10 miles but they still wont. Don’t even have a Dominoes. It just sucks if you only have one car and it breaks. Need two to go get parts for the other. Or you wait for shipping/good weather.

@tinamarie1974 lol I’m good with it but lived with one car for 15 years through all of college and most of the adult life. The Saturn has 240K miles now and a bad bearing causing a rod too knock. So I got an Expedition for $400 and started fixing it. Partially because I can use it to pick up a used engine for the Saturn. It’s cheaper to buy a used engine than rebuild it.
@unksol Saturn was my first new car. I had a bright red SC2 with a sunroof. Loved that thing!!

@tinamarie1974 I’ve got a blue 1999 SL that has a 93 manual transmission in it. Saturn SC/SL/SW are hard to kill and easy to fix
@unksol pretty sure mine was a 98 or 99. I had it for about three years before trading it in. It was a great car

I was admitted through the ER to the hospital for Congestive Heart Failure on January 11 2018 right after my goatdom.

About 12 yrs ago my wife and I scheduled a trip to Greece for a bunch of students. We planned to spend time around Athens, then take a cruise in the Aegean. We really wanted to go to Santorini but the cruise line did 2 different itineraries, and after we had booked our airline tix they flipped the routes. We were the first cruise of the season and had a fantastic time in Patmos, Mykonos and Kusadasi among other stops. The next week, that same boat did the Santorini route, struck a rock and sank. Two people were never recovered… and had been booked in one of the cabins we had students in. We were down the hall, on the other side of a bulkhead…
The icing on the cake is that we flew from Atlanta to Paris and caught a hop to Athens. Turns out that a guy with suspected TB was scheduled for our Paris flight (Air France flight 385) but took the same flight the day before to avoid getting stuck in a travel ban. He was flying to Greece for his wedding. Everyone on his flight had to be checked out for TB, and i believe some had to take prophy meds if memory serves…

We flew to Europe in the spring after 9/1/1 and a bunch of the students had some concerns. In the end only one bailed on the trip. I simply explained that:

, we got stuck in the middle of a half-mile long tunnel and no one turned their engines off 
, and had to get out of Rome by 5 AM because there was a bus drivers’ strike and they were shooting busses 
. All in the span of a week! Clearly wasn’t my time!
