Erector set. Work with steel, gears, motors, mechanisms. From an age when kids could play with steam and electricity, and eat from metal lunch boxes, before the safety czars got their way and sissified everything down to plastic.
Cardboard boxes. Some of the greatest forts of all time started out as lowly shipping boxes. Add a sharpie or two and you've really got something special !
@ceagee YES!!! We swiped a doctor's office exam table box once - really incredibly heavy duty, big… made a cool house with a peaked roof, windows even on the roof, could sit on the roof. Rope with knots to open and shut windows...Stickers crayons, etc. to decorate. We were the envy of the neighborhood. An architect professor saw what we had done and took a photo for his class to show them how creative you could be with a box. The landlord said it would collect rats and made us throw it out. Sad day.
@ceagee I came here to post about cardboard. Cardboard, a sharpie, and a GLUE GUN. Also, a sharp knife. My 11 year old neighbor and I have constructed a doll house, including furnishings with the above building materials. I brought back origami paper from my last visit to the U.S. and we use that to "upholster" the furniture.
Does the erection set still come with a Playboy mag??
I had an Erector set when I was a kid. I loved it. Built so many cool things. Never really got into Legos.
Lol, Erector.
I did enjoy Lincoln logs and Tinker Toys, but LEGO is just perfect. Plus, can you imagine still being into Tinker Toys as an adult? Yeah, no.
@darksaber99999 STAY OUT OF MY CLOSET!!
Lego. Maybe that's why I also drive a brick.
Bricked
C'mon, no Mega Blocks?
@Shitboc Mega Bloks are just Lego wannabes.
Buckyballs! Any chance you have any of those hidden in the back of the warehouse?
Anyone remember Zaks?
@chr but I voted Lincoln Logs because it took less thinking. They were more my speed.
Mud.
Construx!
@isokramer I'll second Construx! I made the weapon from Krull with these things. Take THAT, Lego.
I guess Meccano counts as Erector. Here, have a Meccano dalek.
@Starblind That's awesome.
Mr. & Mrs. Potato head! Not only can you build different poses, you can deep fry and eat your creations when you get bored (pass the ketchup please).

@duodec I think it was the accountants who turned everything to plastic.
@duodec Yep, I was surprised there wasn't more love for the Erector in this poll.
I was a huge Capsela fan as a kid. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsela
@TheArtimus I couldn't think of the name of this- thank you!
@TheArtimus I was just searching for a good picture of this to post and add to the discussion!
@TheArtimus omg. I haven't thought of these in probably 15 years! Thanks for the nostalgia trip.
screw driver and any number of electronics ... best way to grow up EVER and to learn to unplug things before working on them.

@ceagee similarly -- couch cushions.
As soon as I read the poll my first thought was, "Robotix of course! But that'll never be an option."
Now I know that there are at least two people in the world who remember Robotix: myself and the anonymous meh poll creator.
Looks like licensed movie tie-ins are popular with the masses. Is anyone surprised?
I had to vote Lincoln Logs because they remind me of this:
@bluedyn It's big, it's heavy, it's wood!
@narfcake it's better than bad, it's good!
Crazy Ikes! Crazy Ikes! Crazy Ikes!
(If ya gotta ask you're under 55 yrs old ain't ya!)
For kids? Lego. For Grown-Ups? Ikea :)
Atoms. I like to start small.
@PocketBrain quarks!
LEGO. The Power Functions and Mindstorm sets really set them apart from the others.
LEGO by far
there's something about them that just feels right
The sofa, a chair, a folding table and a blanket
@Foxborn my childhood is quite full of card-table-tent tea parties
@katylava My brother and I would flip the furniture (sofa) over after removing the cushions and it was a tent. SOOO much fun
