@macromeh@Star2236 it’s still pretty clean in a lot of parts of the city… but compared to how it was 5 years ago this city is trashed. A lot of the trash gets cleaned up by normal citizens, either organized in groups or some folks just like to bring grabbers and clean up on the walk to their hot yoga classes. But the pics here are around homeless camps that the city has been struggling to deal with. Not sure why there is a picture of our permanent dumpster fire installation; that’s a prototype for a new method of protecting bike lanes.
@macromeh@Oneroundrobb@Star2236 It is unfortunate how much things have shifted in recent years, but it’s hard to blame the city when there’s a housing crisis nationwide and there’s so much work being done to address the issues locally. You do see the results of the homeless camps throughout the area but there’s still an awful lot of beauty to be found here and certainly no shortage of quirky 90’s dreams being lived out.

Not sure where they got the idea that anyone would be wearing timberland boots. We’ve got HQs for Nike and Adidas and Danner and Doc Martens… Also pretty much everyone traded in their cargo pants for yoga pants and one of those new sling/fannie-pack things.
The decriminalization of every hard drug as of February this year has made Oregon a mecca for people who want to do drugs and not pay any kind of penalty. We are talking heroin, meth, phentanyl, opioids, crack, cocaine, literally anything. If you only have personal use amounts then you can just call an 800 number. I heard that since this started only 10 people had called.
Just about every day I see vehicles loaded down with belongings and I’m damn sure they came here for the lax drug laws.
@tweezak there have been about 1000 citations issued in the entire state. Portland police make up 46 of them (and the MultCo Sheriff issued 4.) So, yeah, not seeing very many people use the health screening addiction services phone number to get out of their $100 fine. But that’s a actually probably a good thing because the addiction recovery community is not prepared for the influx of medical treatment that is expected. State leadership dropped the ball, and Portland leadership has been terrible since before we were given the Sophie’s choice for worst mayor last election. Oh, and the federal government would totally give us money to help with drug treatment, but we have legal weed so that’s a no from them.
Portland already had a ton of people doing a ton of drugs. Sure, some people may be moving here to avoid going to jail for personal possession of a drug they (sometimes literally) can’t live without. But people shouldn’t be going to jail for personal possession anyway, wether they care about kicking the addiction of otherwise. Jailing addicts doesn’t work, it’s a waste of resources, it’s inhumane, and the prosecution of drug use has been devastatingly inequitable for minorities.
@lonnyzone zoning rules were drastically relaxed a few years ago. That sparked tons of new construction on large apartment buildings and converting single family lots into multifamily. For a bit there were more cranes in this city than anywhere else in the US.

Just don’t have the dumpster fire anywhere near Powells books or the Japanese gardens because those are the best things about Portland.
Oh and that chain of brew pubs that always repurpose old buildings for their locations. I think one is in an old funeral home.

@Oneroundrobb Addicts have to want to change. Have you ever met one that does? Oregon is making it too easy to keep doing drugs, in my opinion.
Tough zoning rules and a resulting housing crisis. Let the free market dictate supply and it will match demand.
