The Bestest Gas Station Pizza
5I spend a lot of time on the interstate, and tend to eat while driving which probably upsets some people but fuck them. Anyway I get tired of McDoubles and search out other stuff which in a backhanded way led me to QT as they seem to have the cheapest top tier gas (at least until they finally get audited). They have a kitchen in their units that puts out individually ordered heated commissary food. They also have slices of pizza boxed on a hot shelf for grab and go. Someone fully realizied that some fools such as I would try to drive while knoshing their pizza and it is designed to stick together while being held with one hand (So cool you can hold it upside down right out of the box). It’s not horrible pizza. I think it’s better than Domino’s (Domino’s being the cellar floor for chain pizza) (well really that’s Little Caesar’s but do they really exist anymore?). So that in mind, QT has an extra large supreme which I wanted to try given that the grab and go cheese and pepperoni was pretty ok, and they’re pushing a mobile ordering app this month so I figured what the hell and I ordered one last nite. It’s not horrible either. It’s no competition for Uno’s Chicago unit, but it’s better than Domino’s. It’s also ok the next morning with a cup of coffee.

If you get within range, Buc-ee’s.
I love quiktrip, but Buc-ee’s is Nordstroms to Quiktrip’s Target.
People plan routes so that they will arrive at as many Buc-ee’s as possible. Very extensive menu (larger than many restaurants), they make their own fudge and jerky (perhaps bbq also?), cleanest restrooms you will ever see, and showers. One way they keep it nice is to prohibit 18-wheeler parking on their lot. So it’s a family place.

@f00l Unfortunately I didn’t know they existed when I was in Texas, and there are no Buc-ee’s east of the Mississippi. The likelyhood of me getting to one is slim as missus cranky really can no longer travel.
@f00l Reporting live from Terrell:
No pizza here!
Just a chicken stuffed with shrimp and sausage jambalaya and a pork tenderloin stuff with shrimp, andoille & pepper jack cheese, wrapped in bacon, and a BBQ sandwich
But they did have metal goats!
@Moose
Only been to a Buc-ee’s once. The one south of Denton.
Got tacos, which did not suck, considering that I bought them from a fancy gas station that’s about the same size as a small Walmart.
They prob need to add pizza to the menu tho. And pho.
@f00l Gas station pho sounds like trouble brewing in so many ways… For starters, can you imagine a more difficult dish to eat on the road?
@djslack Sounds like a good reason for I=10 to shutdown on a weekend to me.
Little Caesar’s is, unfortunately, alive and thriving here in the Southwest. It’s still the worst of the worst, but Domino’s is not. When they did their revamping of their menu and recipes a few years back, they did an excellent job of it. Where they used to be my pizza-of-last-resort (because I won’t eat gas station food or Little Caesar’s), they are now a very welcome addition to the ecosystem.
Can’t help ya with the gas station food question, because… gas station.
@mehvelous I was never really around Domino’s pre-revamp, but I will say that we do enjoy their offerings now.
Of the big 4 fast-food style pizza joints around us (Pizza Hut, Little Caesar’s, Papa John’s, and Domino’s) LC and PJ are probably the least frequented in our house. I personally don’t like PJ because I can’t stand their sauce (and the amount of sauce).
We both still like LC, and it’s the cheapest and fastest if you just want pepperoni or cheese, but it’s definitely not up to snuff compared to the others.
@mehvelous I actually LIKE Little Ceasers…
and I refuse to give any money to the Domino’s founder, and his extreme catholic views.
@earlyre Also my reason for not ordering Domino’s, though Tom Monaghan actually sold the majority of the company in 1998. Unfortunately he sold it to Bain Capital, which we’re now familiar with thanks to Mitt Romney. Just another reason not to order from them. In addition, “Papa” John Schnatter, besides making disgusting pizza, is a huge contributor to the Koch brothers and had his little tantrum about the Affordable Care Act and how he’d have to raise his prices to afford his giant premium increases.
I readily admit to eating Chick-fil-A and not feeling in the least bit guilty about it…
@mehvelous That’s because you’re never had friedchicken from the Nichol’s station near Belmont Abbey.
@cinoclav Really, how can you not love chicken noodle soup and a chicfila with extra pickles on a cold rainy day.
@cranky1950 On ANY day (except Sunday sadly).
There are a couple gas stations that have Godfathers Pizza inside. Tastes pretty good.
Casey’s. Famous for pizza.
Flying J has decent truck stop food. Little Cesar is like wild fire in these so cal suburbs.
@connorbush Flying J is nolonger Flying J but a Pilot sockpuppet. And they killed their good food and put in Denny’s in most of their units. Like if I had wanted Denny’s I would not have gone to Flying J.
@cranky1950 alas, it has been some time since i ventured to a flying j.
Yummmmmy pizza…we had some delicious pizza in Florence, SC this past week. Not a road side stop but very good!
This is a great gas station pizza place.
