The decision gives every state the right to establish a level at which they require merchants to collect and remit sales tax to them. Because the penalties are harsh and the rules not perfectly clear, the tendency for any legitimate site is going to be to err on the side of collecting that tax.
@jayman007 that one I couldn’t begin to tell you, other than that things set in motion by the government can take time, or maybe there was some additional thing that took place to make this start. But the wayfair case is the main snowball that started rolling down the mountain.
@djslack from what I’m reading, NV had not established this. So it seems that meh is just charging every state because it’s easier for them to manage that rather than only charging the states that require it. Seems like a pita as now they will have to file sales tax what with every state. In my state, the sales tax rate is determined by county so they will have to charge the correct rate depending on the county. I used to own a company that had to deal with this and it was almost not worth me not taking orders in Nevada sincei had to deal with this only on Nevada orders.

Collecting sales tax for online sales
The basic rule for collecting sales tax from online sales is:
1)If your business has a physical presence, or “nexus”, in a state, you must collect applicable sales taxes from online customers in that state.
2)If you do not have a physical presence, you generally do not have to collect sales tax for online sales.
EDIT: I’m completely wrong in this. It seems that NV has adopted this rule for any business that has done for than 200 orders or 100k in business within the state the previous year.
@jayman007 yes, the part stated in your edit comes from the wayfair decision. Previously, there was a mire of decisions about whether a business had nexus in a state. Now it seems the directive is pretty much yes, collect taxes.
Yeah same here in Nv. Not just meh.com but all their sites are charging me tax. Was about to purchase a big ticket item from morningsave.com but the tax cancels out my VMP discount. This might have me rethinking my burn rate here with Meh.
A $5.38 IRK purchase just doesn’t feel the same as a $5 IRK… Honestly I just miss the round numbers. I used to live in Michigan when it had a 4% sales tax – a penny for every $.25, easy peasy. An IRK would be $5.20 – not $5, but roundish. Now in Ohio and $5.38? Sigh.
Blame South Dakota v. Wayfair.
@djslack darn South Dakota. Can’t we cede S.D. to Canada? They don’t deserve to be part of the union expecting us to pay taxes.
@djslack But I don’t live in S. Dakota. What gives for the changes across the board?
@jayman007
/google what does south Dakota v wayfair mean for me

@djslack well that truly sucks big donkey balls.
@djslack that blog is from 2018. Why did meh just start charging tax last week?

@jayman007 Do you want Mercatalyst to go back and charge you retroactively to 2018?
@Barney NV hasn’t joined this so I’d rather they just stop charging me tax.

@djslack @OnionSoup Ehh… we can’t cede South Dakota to Canada; they got Mount Rushmore. The Canucks would end up putting all their P.M.s heads on it.
@djslack @PocketBrain I dunno, they don’t venerate their leaders like the US does…
I’m expecting the presidents to be replaced by Tim Horton and whoever invented poutine.
Yep, first I’ve seen it in PA too.
@cinoclav Lucky you, my first order in PA that they taxed was August 9th 2020. VMP was taxed since around then too.
NJ Too. Sometime between my 8/1 purchase and today. Taxes suck.

Same in MS. Last IRK no, this most recent one yes.
HAHAHAHAHA
You should have been paying your use taxes all along.
HAHAHAHAHAHA
@therealjrn how do you know I don’t?
I Missouri, Meh even charges me sales tax on VMP itself. Ain’t that some horseshit.
@mike808 WHAT??? On VMP too? I wonder if they charge it on someone with a membership.
@mike808 PS I though shipping wasn’t allowed to be taxable anywhere.
At least this will decrease the amount of useless shit I buy from meh…blessing in disguise

@lehigh Here they are $5.40. That is roundish. Move here. But yeah there was something about a $5 irk that really was $5.
Is Meh automatically adding tax at the moment?
