The Wolf Moon is the traditional name for January’s full moon. " Blood" is for the vermilion hue that shades the moon during a lunar eclipse. And the “super” is there because this January’s full moon also happens to be a “supermoon,” meaning the moon is passing at the closest point of its orbit to Earth.
@f00l I’m not sure of the accuracy of that map. It says St. Louis has a good visibility outlook for tonight. It is possible it might change in the next few hours, but looking outside, we are totally overcast and it is snowing.
@daveinwarsh
I did the same. It was cloudy and rainy all weekend, so I wasn’t expecting to get a good view. Surprisingly, it cleared up just enough to get a few good shots through my telescope. I might post the photos later.
Check out this little slideshow of the moon I made during the Super Wolf Blood Moon at midnight, and hit that subscribe and like button to show support, hope you enjoy!
@phendrick im not really sure, i think it was a reflection off of one of the lenses making a second faded moon, but not really for sure, i thought it looked cool so i left it as is and uploaded it into the slideshow.

I’m in a poor viewing area, but I’m hoping for breaks in the clouds tonight.

Should be cloudy and a balmy 13 degrees around midnight here. Not exactly ideal conditions for viewing unfortunately.
Watch it live. No worries about wrong loc or bad weather.
(I think/hope that’s what this is).
@f00l I’m watching it from my front lawn! Except it’s really cold.
It’s clear and chilly, and the moon is bright enough to read by.
Is it supposed to be red?
@sammydog01 Later it will have a red tint. I can see it from my patio!
@therealjrn It’s pretty! I wish I had a window in the right place.
@sammydog01 I’m just running in and out for now
@sammydog01
When the sunlight no longer directly hits the moon, it does appear to be a kind of rusty red. I’ve seen several of these eclipses.
I think that’s becsuse of the remaining light bounce illumination by light scatter at the red end of the spectrum or something.
Ask an astronomer - or google or Wikipedia - or someone who knows for sure - if you want a more better answer than that one.
@f00l So every eclipse is a blood moon? Kind of makes the name less meaningful.
@sammydog01
To the ancients these were often seen as big scary symbolic “wrath of the gods” events.
Not to the degree of a solar eclipse tho.
(A significant eclipse happens in A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur’s Court, doesn’t it?)
@f00l Yep. Time Tunnel too.
@f00l @sammydog01 yes, each TOTAL eclipse.
of the heart
FUCKING CLOUDS!!!
The sunlight is about to start hitting it again. More than halfway thru total.
Here’s the L.A. view:
@sammydog01
Instead of whatever music they are using, I think they should just put the audio track of the Queen Live Aid Concert performance on a loop for this.
@porvad Did you take that? It’s nice!
Yes, thanks. It’s 10 degrees out there.
The wolf blood moon eclipse.
Here’s a few pics I took before it clouded up.

@CasperEx What’s happening at 0:25? That’s a kinda weird looking partition?
@phendrick im not really sure, i think it was a reflection off of one of the lenses making a second faded moon, but not really for sure, i thought it looked cool so i left it as is and uploaded it into the slideshow.
We got to see it for the first few minutes it was totally eclipsed, but then it got cloudy.
Here’s a few pics I took.
@jsh139
Nice!
@f00l thanks!
This is all the show we had in my area. Taken at the peak. Little sign of the rouge, even less of the eclipse.
