@lonocat So a doctor walks in the room and starts to write down some notes.
The nurse says, doctor, that’s a thermometer!
Doctor says “some asshole’s got my pen!”
Summer Re-runs season I guess. Got 2 last time. Seem to be good quality. That said, I did not actually try to measure temperature of an ear or forehead or butt. So no idea really. Sorry now I feel I have not fulfilled my duty….
Bought two few months ago as receiving cold meals at home. I get five or more different readings on food and invited to test inside fridge storage and get temps up to 46° of a commercial wall temp gauge reading 34.5°. Same results with other purchased thermometer. Just not accurate enough and refuses to read hot food at 169°
As an aside I read a science article where they looked at the changes in face temperature in people of different ages and different sexes. There is a huge difference. As you age your face gets cooler (so I’d suspect a low grade fever is missed in older folks). Women have cooler foreheads than men so if you are a woman and go to the doctor and they use these and you are sick make sure they have it at your temple and not your forehead. That area of your face seems to “cool off” the least. And how close you hold it to the skin affects the temperature read. Of course if you just drank cold water on the way to the doctor (or in the case of my kid drank hot water as she didn’t want to go to school that day) oral thermometers are less accurate too. Hmm I wonder if a bidet affects but temps. Not going to even think about testing that out.
@somf69 I concur. I got one a few months ago and it is fine.
I wanted it to take the temp of my Grill and make sure she was hot enough for my meat.
Sadly my Grills hotness is off the scales for this thermometer.
I wish it had a higher range on it. Not even going up past 200f means that it’s not even good for smoking.
@lichen@somf69 I didn’t even know this one did double-duty until re-reading the offer. It’s nice it can do a bigger range than “Living human” but even the other range is still limited.
I have several of the more normal trigger-style used for HVAC, automotive, etc work. Most will have much larger range. Brands like General and Craftsman I would sometimes find on clearance. And of course Harbor Freight stuff which sometimes is fine.
I always keep on in my truck and use it to check tire and brake temperatures, or just how friggin’ cold it is on a Wyoming morning in Winter.
I’m not a gnome collector, but if I would be I’d start with that guy, maybe lure him in with a wee dram and pint of ale. (Not talking any kinky gnome stuff just tell him to stand in my yard)
@evangelionhd My order came in today. Opened the package, put in the batteries, watched it light up, then turn itself off almost immediately. It didn’t turn back on. I think the batteries are less than meh. Will see later what happens with NEW batteries.
@evangelionhd@phendrick I had a (similar? opposite?) odd experience: I put in a pair of lithium AAAs (I no longer put alkalines in devices that will likely sit in a drawer for years, un-looked-at), took the surface temp of the countertop, BEEP, took the surface temp of my shirt, BEEP, took the surface temp of a pendant I’m wearing around my neck, BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE… and so on, until I removed one of the batteries. I switched it to body temp, took a few readings, and they seemed to be within spec, so I’m going to assume that weird first go was just the thermometer’s HELLO WORLD routine running or something.
What a piece of junk this turned out to be. Mine just died as I tried to use it this morning, maybe only used it a half dozen times and its dead in one month.
I bought this (Chinese) item and it worked fine on arrival. Sat in my medicine chest for a couple months and now it’s dead as a doornail.
The website given in the instruction manual for warranty work says “coming soon”.
Don’t buy. If you have a problem with it, you’re out of luck.
@buffalobob Assuming the sale above is where it was purchased, you’re within the 90-day warranty from Meh, so head over to meh.com/support and let them know.

They’re actually pretty fun, more so for temps in the attic, garage, tires, wheel bearings on trips, that kind of stuff.
/BYE BYE
Any idea what the measurement range is? Seems like it’s optimized for body temperature, but can I use it to measure oven or freezer temps too?
@agnesnutter From the main page.
Body mode will measure 93.2°-109.4°F
Object mode will measure 32.0°-199.4°F
@yakkoTDI Oops, I forgot to look there! I figured if they had that stat, it would be included in the table on this page. Thanks!
Accurate to within five degrees!
Do you know the difference between an old fashioned oral and rectal thermometer?
The taste
@lonocat So a doctor walks in the room and starts to write down some notes.

@lonocat The color code (red & blue) for oral & rectal thermometers is reversed between the US & UK.
Just a warning.
@blaineg @lonocat Hmm, no color coding on today’s offering, but it looks like it would be difficult to insert in either orifice.
@blaineg @lonocat @macromeh
You are not trying hard enough.
@blaineg @lonocat @macromeh @yakkoTDI or not brave enough

@pmarin We can wait for you to perform the butt test, if you prefer.

By the looks of it, getting a rectal temperature might be uncomfortable.

Hard pass. I haven’t even opened the one (different brand) I got here last summer!
@ratman You should get these in case those don’t work.
