Keep one of these in every first aid kit along with narcan. Yes, it’s not rated for medical use, but a cheap pulse oximeter has a lot of value in quickly understanding if there is a serious blood oxygen problem. You might call 911 anyways, but it helps to have the info.
The battery life is 24-ish hours in constant active operation. For most people, the hot ticket will be to put a reminder in the calendar to swap out the batteries about once every year or two unless you use it a lot, and just make sure to turn it off when not in use rather than waiting for it to shut down automagically.
As far as using it “during exercise, sporting, and aviation activities”, I will note that your friendly neighborhood FAA reportedly does not encourage the use of nonessential devices of any kind while operating an aircraft. (And as far as using it while actually engaged in the others, I know that I wouldn’t want that lump insecurely clipped to my fingertip.)
@werehatrack For rarely used devices like this, I just pop the batteries out and rubber band them to the outside. Saves me a lot of futile wire-brushing.
@werehatrack@whogots Smart! After the zillionth cotton-swab-dipped-in-vinegar brushing from leaky alkalines, I finally decided to use (admittedly expensive) lithium batteries in devices like this where I expect to use it, throw it in a drawer, and remember it a year or two or three later. Your way is cheaper if I don’t mind scrubbing a drawer (or drawer liner)…
@EvilSmoo I’m sure it wouldn’t. I’ve had this brand, and it was accurate enough. Five bucks is down at the Temu price range, and this has the advantage of not being a factory second with a peel-n-stick “brand” that’s not registered anywhere including a dictionary.
@chienfou@werehatrack Actually that’s the easy part, nearly every phone with a flash and camera can use them to measure pulse rate. Oxy, I do not know, I’ve never looked it up.
@chienfou Validated against the overpriced one at the doc’s office. One finger apart, same reading. The same was also true for a no-label one that I picked up elsewhere, for that matter. This is not a tech that’s as finicky as tomography.
@chienfou After enough years in production, the certification cost is no longer the big factor. It’s the liability insurance. Generally, by the time that the patent has expired, the certification has been amortized long since. But the insurance is forever. And while a home user has little or no need to be concerned about that insurance, because suing to collect on it is not going to go very far, a medical practitioner does not dare have such effectively uninsured equipment on the premises.
@craigthom@mediocrebot I would like to know if this couple is still together. Craig, Holly? How are you guys? Did you have any kids? Craig, Holly, hello can you hear me?
You can buy these on Amazon albeit a different brand for $8.50. The 15% coupon is automatically applied to both the black and white version. Free shipping for Prime members.
@rpstrong It can certainly make sure that the widget can’t be extracted from a bag or pocket without pulling out everything the lanyard has become tangled with.
Ah, the world is coming back into order. A must-have product for 2020, now on Meh for $5 and being snapped up a pace. Truly comforting would be if the 2 AAA’s had an expiration date sometime in 2023…
Truly comforting would be if the 2 AAA’s had an expiration date sometime in 2023…
I’ll let you know when they get here. (I would be surprised if they had a best-by date marked on them at all, but I would not be surprised if they were already dead and/or were a brand never seen on shelves in the US.)
@Euniceandrich@mediocrebot Why would they be trying to find a way to create cultured marmot when real marmot is plentiful, and in locales where they are regarded as vermin, free?
I keep a similar pulse ox in my bag when traveling on ski trips, particularly to high altitude areas. It’s really useful in recognizing altitude sickness as your SpO2 will drop. We once had a friend on his first day on a Colorado trip not just experience altitude sickness but had begun showing signs of cerebral edema from it. Interestingly enough, he had been out there numerous times before and never had any issues. It can strike anyone at any time, generally when you’re over about 8000’ in altitude. I usually pretreat with Diamox on those trips to help acclimate more quickly.
@Lynnerizer We found a mountain guide who gave us the quickest route to the base (we were skiing at Keystone). He said give him 30 minutes, if he’s not showing signs of improving, drive him to Denver to get him below altitude. Which of course pissed us off as we had told him to pretreat with the Diamox and he didn’t do it. We really didn’t want to ruin our first day on the slopes due to his stubbornness. Fortunately he started to feel better. He went back to our house and started with the Diamox and we went back to skiing. All was well the rest of the week. His sickness started with vomiting and when he stood up he realized he was losing his vision. It was pretty scary.
@cinoclav@Lynnerizer
Diamox is wonderful stuff in those situations. We pretreated when we went to Machu Picchu years ago which I think was a big help.
By the way Keystone is a great area. Ever ski Arapshoe basin? It’s nearby in Summit County and a good bit of it is above the tree line so you can ski until June some years… not as much of a “stay in the lodge” destination ski area (so a lot more locals) but great terrain.
@Springbank Agree. I keep one on my desk and when I’m in a conference call that seems particularly intense, I’ll check my pulse to see if the meeting is impacting me physiologically and I might want to focus on my breathing (and/or think, “F[orget] this baloney”) to bring things down a notch.
In for five! I keep a bunch of these around the house, one in my purse, etc. because I have emphysema and asthma and I live in Colorado at around 6,000 feet. I usually pay around $20 for them, so this is a happy deal for me.
/giphy humbling-sizable-mailbox
I see next to no one has bought these in Mississippi. I’d imagine this is likely because so many in this state, including almost all politicians here, don’t have a heart to begin with so no need to have one. Now if meh sold deodorant, as this state is the arm pit of the nation, maybe there would be a market here for that.
As an FYI, “The FDA issued a safety communication External Link Disclaimer in 2021 informing patients and health care providers that although pulse oximetry is useful for estimating blood oxygen levels, pulse oximeters have limitations and a risk of inaccuracy under certain circumstances that should be considered. Multiple factors can affect the accuracy of a pulse oximeter reading, such as poor circulation, skin pigmentation, skin thickness, skin temperature, current tobacco use, and use of fingernail polish.”
These (and almost all sold over the counter so no different in that respect) are not medical grade and not FDA cleared. There are a couple you can buy without a prescription that are medical grade and FDA cleared, but they are far more expensive. Bear that in mind when you use this.
@Kidsandliz Duly noted, but for the record, whenever I’m in the hospital, I compare my cheap oximeters against the hospital sensor, and they have all matched up with or been within 1% with the numbers on the monitor.
@Pony There is some research I read since posting what I posted that found that most non rx ones (cheapies) generally are within 1-4% of the FDA ones for any reading 90% and over; that under that there is huge variation between them (between cheapies vs cheapies and between cheapies vs FDA cleared ones). So as long as you aren’t all that low likely they are “good enough”.
@conan785 This AI needs some pointers (get it?) on bones, as you indicated. TWo forearms, an extra left fibula, too many bones in the fingers and something strange in the posterior skull.
This looks just like one of mine (I can’t find the other, of course) sold by another company and it works well, although sometimes it gives a completely wrong number until I reposition it. At $5 it is a bargain.
No one will read this but don’t buy today’s side deal. I bought one before and it was useless. Worse than useless, inaccurate. Buy a real blood pressure cuff.
@Fuzzalini@macromeh@phelmurh Wrist cuffs are much trickier to use than upper-arm cuffs, and can produce results that are off in either direction. Arm cuff errors tend to be on the high side. Much depends on the person using the cuff.
@Kidsandliz Some are accurate if used correctly, some just aren’t. It’s difficult to know which is which without testing them. Surprisingly, as long as I get it in the right spot, the wrist cuff I got from Harbor Freight has been in close agreement with both the arm cuff I use regularly and the arm cuffs at my doctors’ offices. But if it’s not positioned just right, the reading is high.
@mehcuda67 That would be a yeast monoculture, not an ecosystem. It’s doomed to inevitable demise as it reaches its critical level of unsustainable growth.

You most likely see the effects of this every day.
@mehcuda67@werehatrack
While famine is undeniably an issue in many places that is more a distribution issue than a production issue. Other effects of unbridled growth (like global warming, air and water pollution) have less well confined areas affected.

I wonder if it would register a pulse if you put a hot dog in it. At a $5 price point, maybe, maybe not…
@EvilSmoo I’m sure it wouldn’t. I’ve had this brand, and it was accurate enough. Five bucks is down at the Temu price range, and this has the advantage of not being a factory second with a peel-n-stick “brand” that’s not registered anywhere including a dictionary.
@EvilSmoo @werehatrack

@chienfou @werehatrack Actually that’s the easy part, nearly every phone with a flash and camera can use them to measure pulse rate. Oxy, I do not know, I’ve never looked it up.
@EvilSmoo clip it to the hot dog’s tail?
@chienfou Validated against the overpriced one at the doc’s office. One finger apart, same reading. The same was also true for a no-label one that I picked up elsewhere, for that matter. This is not a tech that’s as finicky as tomography.
@werehatrack
The ‘overpriced one’ is a function of the certification process for medical equipment. Sort of like how NSF stuff works at commercial kitchens.
Good thinking taking yours with you to run side by side tests though.

@mehvid1 A landyard is three landfeet, or a few inches less than a landmeter.
@werehatrack That tracks. BTW, @meh… MY BAD… I did receive batteries with my purchase. No assaults, though, so far….
My order has been “processing” since the 16th.
When can I expect it…?
It took 5 days to move my order from “processing” to “shipped”… How long until “delivered”?
