It always sucks. Even on the days where the temperature is reasonable, the swarms of wasps and other flying insects make it impossible to enjoy doing anything outside.
@hchavers I’m expecting that the wildfire season is going to be worse than usual this year. Around here, it was unusually wet all the way up to June, and then it switched to intense heat and no rain. We’ve got huge amounts of dried-out underbrush and tall grasses - and the trees are dessicating fast in these hot winds. I’ve already seen numerous patches of burnt grass on road medians where assholes have flicked their cigarette butts out of their cars, and it won’t be long before the verges get lit that way, too. There are no fire breaks along the freeway fence lines, so a grass fire on a rural shoulder has a good chance to become a full wildfire when it hits the trees.
@hchavers@werehatrack
I totally agree with your assessment of those idiots. I think their butt holes would be perfect places to stash their used butts, preferably while still simmering.
The next worst offenders are those who empty their ash trays in store parking lots, on the pavement. Then those who dump their butts in my yard along the curb, while walking, along with their leftover to-go food and packaging.
I keep wondering how homo stupidus has lasted so long as a species.
When not killing each other in wars or at “social” occasions, we glorify violence and other forms of ignorance. OTOH, I’m all for doing away with anyone who attacks other people for no legitimate cause, including sexual assault, robbery, “road rage”, etc. Don’t try to enter my house uninvited.
@hchavers@kuoh@werehatrack Nah, not my place. I prefer to know whom I’m shooting at. Also, improves the aim. And I see no advantage in having holes in the door or wall in this heat. That kind of ventilation works against the AC.
Said it was a tenant firing. Bet the management was not pleased.
By the last remarks in the video, the outside perps gave the inside perp a good chance at a self-defense plea, if charged.
“Maintenance workers” returned fire? They always carry there? (I never intend to live there again!)
@hchavers@kuoh@phendrick@werehatrack I mean. Maintenance workers don’t break in doors. They have keys. And call ahead. I personally probably would have waited for them to break the door while calling 911. But if they made it in some 00 seems appropriate
@hchavers@kuoh@phendrick@unksol A friend of mine lives in an apartment complex where the bigger hazard is not from burglars trying to steal your stuff, but from squatters mistakenly breaking open your door looking for an empty apartment that they can quietly occupy. He had that happen several years ago while he was out of town tending to a terminally ill family member, and I had to make an emergency repair run down there to repair the door frame and moderately harden it against a second attempt. (Either that didn’t happen, or the hardening worked.) The apartment complex managers still have not done anything to either replace the damaged bits or further perform cosmetic improvements. The door and frame remain as I left them - functional, but not exactly perfect.
@hchavers@kuoh@phendrick@werehatrack yea. I mean… I get it it’s probably terrifying but. If you have time to line up on the door… Maybe hold your fire just a split second and let them run.
Granted could just be cops with a no knock warrant at a made up address. But they are going to shoot you anyway so…
I don’t leave the house during the peak of summer unless I’m in an air conditioned vehicle. Even checking my mailbox feels like stepping into a coal-fired boiler. (I’m in central Florida.)
I wait the entire year for winter, and it never lasts long enough.
@PooltoyWolf Exact opposite for me! If it’s cold outside I’m staying in…low 60s or below and I’m just miserable . I’m the one carrying a sweater into Publix when it’s 90+° outside
I know it’s been brutal lately but my favorite weather is wall-to-wall blue skies which we rarely see outside of spring training season; we’ve had a lot of them this summer
I live in Floriduh for the sunshine and the heat but I’m eying some islands in the southern part of Japan…in my mind. Mehbe some day…
To: everyone that has answered the poll thus far.
Sounds like somebody crapped in your otter pops this year! I guess cheer up because it’s almost over? Or something…
@sicc574 I mean… I just chose to interpret it as the worst season. Not the worst thing ever. Goes fall/spring/winter/summer for me. Personally. Although month wise I think August wins worst. I apologize if August is your birth month lol
Without going all Yogi Berra, the summer in the south half of Texas includes September, often runs well into October and sometimes November, and even in December you don’t know when the weather is going to decide to reverse course and throw in another few days of it. The last few years, it’s been common to see people saying “Go home, weather, you’re drunk” during the “fall” around here.
@sicc574@werehatrack Ha! A good number of years ago, Best Buy had just opened their first store in our area here. I went in to check out the appliance specials. I asked where the Air Conditioners were. This was maybe November.
I was told they were a “seasonal item”. I said to the just-started-shaving sales guy, “OK, which season in Texas is the one when it doesn’t get hot?” He had no answer.
I noticed a few years later they were carrying them pretty much year-round there.
I was told they were a “seasonal item”. [AC units]
That would be like telling folks out on the Llano Estacado that rifles were a hunting season item. Feral pigs and smaller vermin are year-long hazards. (A friend up near Navasota has become mightily tired of burying the carcasses of the fecking pigs. He has damned near worn out the backhoe on his tractor.)
@sicc574@werehatrack “burying the carcasses”? What, has the heat and drought killed off all the buzzards and/or coyotes there? Last I heard, we still have those here, a half hour drive away.
@phendrick@sicc574 Unless you have enough land that the rotting carcass won’t reek for anyone downwind, you pretty much have to bury them. He’s upwind of one of those fancy-pants “ranch homes” rural escapee developments full of city folk who have no idea how to close a squeeze chute or why you might need one. And while three buzzards can polish off a dead possum in an hour or so, four-hundred-pound pigs are outside the capacity of a county’s worth of them. And he frequently has half a dozen to dispose of, ranging from 50 to the aforementioned 400 pounds.
@lisagd just FYI I live in the southern hemisphere of Mars in a very comfy underground city(so no real seasons). But I occasionally do summer on the dark side of Earths moon but rethinking that because I’m tired of getting hit with Russian crash shrapnel.
For where I live, it is my least favorite season. And it’s not THAT bad here. I have the windows open tonight.
I think I can extrapolate based on factors that unless I lived in very northern climate, it would continue to be regardless of where. Alaska. Norway/Sweden/Finland/Iceland. Parts of Canada. Could change that.
They still have the flying bugs though.
How’s Ireland on bugs? This could be a key factor.
I’m in Dallas. You know… It’s hot! It’s BEEN hot! It’s gonna BE hot!
It reminds me of the poem, “Hell in Texas”.
I hate hot weather! Dry, non-ending hot weather that makes you stick to everything and everything sticks to you and bugs don’t seem to mind, except they stick to you, too.
And NOTHING will cool you off for longer than the moment you’re there because right next to that wonderful cool…is more HOT!
The WORST! The absolute WORST! I can’t wait for FALL!
@Tadlem43 Heh. Dallas folks sneer at the humidity down here in the swamp, and us Houstonians look at the higher-than-us summer high temps plus the winter snow that TXDOT is never prepared for, and just think “Glad I’m not up there.”
Last night the weather report said 105-107 for the next 6 out of 7 days with high humidity. We are 3 weeks and counting of temps 100+ and for a handful of days we have broken the hottest temp for that day and in one case ever. Nope nope nope.
At least with cold weather you can put on more clothes. With hot weather there is a limit for what you can take off and you can not take off your skin.
At least with cold weather you can put on more clothes. With hot weather there is a limit for what you can take off and you can not take off your skin.
That’s my objection to hot weather, too. I’m prone to heat exhaustion and I burn easily, so I spend as much time as possible indoors.
@Kidsandliz@phendrick I got badly sunburned in a bathing suit once, and it was not fun. I had such edema, I didn’t pee for 2 or 3 days. The pain and itching were terrible.
@lisagd@phendrick I’ve also had a few bad sunburns in my youth. And sun poisoning once. And when taking JD’s canoeing across the state of florida my bathing suit bottom rode up a bit once and I had a strip of sunburn that actually had scabs. Oops.
I’ve noticed after living in South Carolina for a while that those who complain we don’t have four true seasons are incorrect. South Carolina has four seasons.
Autumn: October through December.
Spring: Jan through March
Summer: April and May.
Hell’s Fire with sprinklings of Satan’s sweaty balls: June through September.
@OnionSoup Yeah, they need to spend a year in Miami before they complain about your climate. Down there, most years, it’s pretty much “somebody else’s summer” from December through March, and then “Sodden Overheated Sauna” from April through November. I moved from Miami to Houston to take advantage of the cool, dry climate.
@lisagd looks like a good girl. I just thought If you wanted to share. Not sure if she’s been on one of the many pet threads? Looks like she’s got a buddy back there.
The cats… There are many pics. There is a whole month of them cause goatdumb. the pile on my phone is. A lot.
If you leave Florida during the summer, you miss out on loquats, lychees, longans, mangoes, sugar apples, and probably a few other fruits. No thanks! I’ll suffer through a few extra hot days in exchange. (Also, it’s not like other places aren’t hot, too. Our summers may be 10 degrees hotter than say, New York, but our winters are 40-50 degrees warmer. Another trade I’m happy to make.)
@Weboh Eh, lychees get real old really fast if you make the mistake of planting one, quadruply so if one of your neighbors planted one close to your lot line 15 years ago. Loquats grow just fine here in Houston, TYVM. Longan is no loss IMHO. Mangoes, yeah, I do miss having ripe-from-the-tree mangoes available, because they don’t taste anywhere close to the same when picked too early. Sugar “apples”, meh, I remember them, but I wouldn’t have walked a block in the heat to pick some. Sapodilla, now, that would be worth it. And the fruit spike from Monstera deliciosa is a real treat.
Most of the year.
I don’t like summer on a good day so… The worst, always the worst.
It always sucks. Even on the days where the temperature is reasonable, the swarms of wasps and other flying insects make it impossible to enjoy doing anything outside.
It’s bad, but I’ve experienced worse (places with never-ending humidity besides the heat).
@phendrick [cough]southflorida
This year has been brutal. The heat, the drought, the blow dryer wind. It’s not always this bad.

Or does summer drought mimic that too?
@phendrick @sicc574 Unless you have enough land that the rotting carcass won’t reek for anyone downwind, you pretty much have to bury them. @Kidsandliz @phendrick I feel ya. That time, I had second degree burns on the backs of my knees.

@kuoh @lisagd fuggetaboudit.
@kuoh @Kyeh you’re so smooth
The best thing about summer is that it stays light later. It’s a lifesaver for those of us with seasonal depression and us night people.
@lisagd that I will give you. And they need to do something about DST.
It’s a little depressing when the only light is while you’re at work.
@unksol I agree. At least working from home, I can sit by a window. Walking my dog got me outside too, but she’s gone now.
@lisagd mmm… sorry about that. Pictures?
Yea I have a window wfh and agood view. And a basket of cats. Just can’t do anything outside during the work week
@unksol How many ya want? I’ve got a folder full.
