Stars - January facies duos capra 01/04-5/20

What do you like?
I suspect I may be one of those “people in forums that like too much” (certainly there are self-help books and therapy groups for me):
My altruism score hovers around 20-21, which I think is on the high side. I checked some of the other “nonstop, irrepressible chatterbox” types and the scores are usually from 1 to 5 or so, with a couple 10s. Then there’s @Shrdlu with that unbelievable 111.7!
I don’t really work on it – I just star anything that seems nice, useful, informative, funny, helpful, sincere – I figure it’s always good to encourage such sentiments. I don’t star things that are antagonistic, mean, or demeaning. I also star any reply to my posts or comments, whether they’re nice or contentious, just out of politeness. And for this month, everyone on the blame thread gets a star!
So, am I too starry-eyed? What makes you click that star?
- 9 comments, 46 replies
- Comment
I tend to star comments that are thought provoking, that I agree with or generally responses to my posts. That said, I am clearly not as kind as you as my altruism score is under 2.
@tinamarie1974 or you post a lot more. The more you post, the lower your altruism score is going to be. You would have to star everything to keep it that high. In general, if I notice someone has above a 1, I think that they are at least trying.
@RiotDemon well now that makes sense. When I was goat I was posting A LOT and I noticed my score nose dived. Shortly after my month I noticed my score slowly climbing, but I didn’t understand why.
TYVM
@tinamarie1974 if you click on your profile on a computer and hover over the word altruism, it explains how the score works. It’s something along the lines of (comments + replies + topics created)/stars given.
@RiotDemon I had no idea. Thanks
I hate everyone and everything. Always!
There. Is that positive enough for you? Huh, buddy?
STAR ME!
I don’t deserve it. That’s why I DEMAND it!

Generally I just lurk. I can’t keep my meh button string going (95 is my longest). I do hand out a lot of likes:
for an altruism score of 539.5.
@gary87zx your score is down to 360 now! You’ve got some work to do!
@gary87zx
Re altruism: Uh …
/giphy Wow!
Fine altruism there!
But feel free to blow off that questionable rating, and talk more instead. We’d all prob like that v much.
I don’t think anyone stars too much unless they are starring comments that are unsavory. Altruism is a weird thing because you get “punished” the more you post. I have more than double the amount of stars given out than you but my score only hovers around a 3.7. As I said in another comment, if I notice someone’s score is above a 1, I think that they are making an effort.
Sometimes I’m not sure about the stars. Would we get more comments without them? Occasionally I’ll think about posting a reply but instead I just star the comment to give some support. I just don’t have enough time to reply to everything.
@RiotDemon
I’m always working in being:
A Moar Compleat Asshat.
So I never anything.
/giphy Star asshat
@RiotDemon
/giphy “good giphy! Good giphy!”
@f00l @RiotDemon I see the star as a way of nodding in agreement/acknowledgement - as you mention, don’t have time to reply to everything , especially if I’ve nothing to really add to the posting.
@f00l @RiotDemon @stolicat
me too post
@RiotDemon @stolicat @therealjrn
I star posts I agree with, and posts appreciate or think boost the site experience for everyone. Or posts that aren’t hostile or rude (since this is hardly the place for hostility or rudeness.)
Plus I like stars.
/image Milky Way 3
@therealjrn you post too much? Whaaaat?
/giphy whaaat
Much the same as you, but not as much probably.
I did notice you were starring a lot of people from January 1st on. I never noticed it before.
Don’t you usually post a tumble of whisky and a dog a lot too? Or is that somebody else?
@therealjrn I think you’re confusing me with jackdanielsdog
@stolicat Okay
@stolicat @therealjrn you talkin’ to me?
/giphy you talkin to me
@stolicat Oh! Hey there @llangley! LTNS, I get so confused sometimes.
Ha .4 altruism score over here. Yeah you read that right 0 then a decimal point then a 4. So yeah I don’t give out stars often if you get one count it as a blessing. Likes, thumbs up, stars what have you are the equivalent of making a millennial not know how to communicate back. For that matter the next student that replies to an email with a thumbs up emoji is likely to just fail on principle alone.
@bleedmichigan
Hmmm… That reminds me, how is that candidacy for whatever is available in either the 2020 election or the 2022 election going, @bleedmichigan ?
@aetris I’m seriously considering running against our state house rep. He has run Unopposed twice and he is not very popular currently. At the same time how I would go about doing that is unclear.
/giphy elect me
@aetris @bleedmichigan I see being elected Scapegoat has made you hungry for power good luck of you do run
@aetris @bleedmichigan @tinamarie1974
@aetris @tinamarie1974 Definitely don’t want power would like to make the world a better place for my kids and my kids kids and everyone else. Big fan of democracy which is not power and one person or one group or one party it’s just supposed to be shared responsibility at the will of the people and I’m pretty sure most politicians forget that
@aetris @bleedmichigan well said
I look at stars as a measure of consumption of content -the post-, not
of the person consuming content (star-ing a post).
It doesn’t really measure altruism or anything significant in terms of those who volunteer the actual content the people who star (or don’t) consume.
To me, those voluntarily creating the content you come here to consume, regardless of how you feel about it, are far more altruistic than what it purports to measure.
What it realky measures is simply those with a predeliction for performing a trivial act of unspecified meaning that really only denotes the content (post) was consumed at its core. And doing so in a ratio far exceeding the instances of creating content for others to consume.
So, I consider content producers (frequent posters) far more “altruistic” than the content consumers. Even then, stars don’t really measure the consumption of said content (a post), only the value of that content to the consumer (reader). The caveat is that the “value” is measured in “the effort required to star the post” and nothing more. No claim can be made as to why a post was starred, only that it either was or wasn’t, and there is no way to measure the number of those that did not star the post.
A better altruism measure might be the average number of “stars” that person receives on their posts.
But that creates the environment ripe for the whole “whoring for likes” popularity contests we see playing out on FB, Insta, YT, and reality TV contest shows (Idol, Voice, Survivor, Big Brother, etc.) and the cultural cesspool that is the “influencer” culture.
Oh well.
@mike808
I give this
I would think frequent posters, in a sizable group of frequent posters, could still have high numbers of stars in ratio to their posts simply by indicating agreement or encouragement in the course of the post discussions. I just worry about doing it too often and cheapening the gesture.
@mike808
IE (my stupid and quickie version)
Stars (for posts at Meh) are a cute, easy and quick, slightly addictive, mostly meaningless but fun “Internet Thing”.
And altruism rating, as defined by the Meh formula, is another cute, nearly meaningless “Internet Thing”
/giphy everybody gets a gold star
@f00l is going to star this post.
You’re welcome.
@therealjrn
I’m trying really hard to not apologize.
@f00l @therealjrn No problem - I can take the blame for your not apologizing.
I generally star a post that makes me laugh out loud, but there was a time when I was liking things I kind of liked in order to up my altruism score.
Also, your impressive altruism score is even moreso considering your total lack of self-likes. I have three that I’ll probably never be able to undo .
/giphy three self likes
@eonfifty you’re fucked. So sorry.
@RiotDemon
/giphy indeed
@eonfifty @RiotDemon I mistakenly self-starred once, noticed that “ew” in my profile, and spent an hour going over past posts to find it and turn it off.
@eonfifty @stolicat next time you notice that, look at your profile, change the filters to stars given, then look for the recycling logo. Easy peasy. As long as it’s within 30 days, that is.
/giphy recycle
@RiotDemon @stolicat
I think I may have had 10 at one point, so I searched and searched to undo them, but those last three seem to be forever lost.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
/blame
Was washing my hands at a truck stop. Left my nice Garmin watch on the counter and drove off.
/unblame
was still in the area when headslap moment occurred. Watch, where are you?
I drove back to the truck stop and my watch had been turned in by an employee and was in the company safe. Awesome!
I left a decent $ reward for the employee. But the employee didn’t turn in my watch for the reward. The person turned in my watch because
/right thing to do.
That’s a true happy new year moment for me.
Not only did I get my watch back, I was benefitted by a person who is just plain decent and honest because they want to be that sort of person!
Nice feeling.

@f00l
I’m so out of it this morning that I put this remark into the wrong topic.
I’ll copy it over to that topic. Sigh.
@f00l absolution over in the blame thread …
