@jouest I picked up a couple of these when the offer was up, and for the price ($20) I think they’re a much better deal than the Stanley option. However, there’s something to be said for the amount of fluid you can carry in a Stanley mug. If I need a bit more I grab my Owala bottle. Holds 24oz and for sale around $25. Bonuses: they don’t have a straw just hanging out, seal well, and fit in my car cupholder.
The exterior coating has a good grippy feel, but it’s not that nasty “soft grip” crap that ruins screwdrivers and other tools by turning into obnoxious goo.
I have an assortment of bottles from unknown brands, all of which seem to keep cold stuff cold and hot stuff hot. Most are in the 24pz range since toting around a 5 lb weight is not on my agenda. My regular ‘work outside all day in the Alabama heat in July’ cup will still have ice in it after hours in the sun.
Pro tip: if you like to have ice cold fluids while you are flying you can pack the bottle with ice before you leave the house then go thru TSA security before you fill it with water. Ice is a solid so doesn’t give them any cause to toss your drink. (I have done this for the 2+ hr trip to Atlanta from our house and never had a problem. If you are worried about the small amt of water that may occur from any melt off you can always sip it before you get to the scanner)
@chienfou Sorry it’s still stupid F-in TSA rules. One reason I didn’t fly for 20 years until I had to fly to my mother-in-law’s funeral, because it was in 2 days and it was a 4-day drive. Flight and TSA wasn’t terrible and people were nice but still not something I ever want to do if I can avoid it.
It is a “creative” idea being able to take solid ice. But I’m sure if you try this enough you’ll get flagged eventually. One time it was “your watch is fine” and next time it was “wait, you must take of your watch NOW” – different people and different equipment. As much as we need security, most of it was for show for political purposes, as we are going to see again now. Sorry, (end of rant).
@pmarin
No… Ice is Ice. It is actually not up for discussion. Cream cheese OTOH can be problematic. I have been thru LOTS of TSA checks at lots of different airports. Its never been a problem and the staff always says so. In fact, tomorrow I will do the same on my way to Montgomery to fly to Atlanta then on to Amsterdam.
As a TSA pre-check I often get weird looks when I tell them I am an opt IN for the scanner instead of the walk thru detector. Having a hip replacement makes that a no-brainer.
Still have a green Stanley thermos from … over 30 years ago, back when they were made in the USA.
Have these from almost a decade ago:
Not sure where the Bubba cups are off to, but I still have several Contigo cups from here in rotation. Also some non-Stanley cups of the sub-$10 variety via Woot and Amazon.
@jouest Seriously, if Stanley Steamers had looked that sexy, perhaps they wouldn’t have gone out of business. Love the smokestack. Showme’s rendition is really steampunk looking… though maybe Stanley Steamers could be called original steampunk.
@Kidsandliz I just realized that they spell it “Steemer” in the company name. Odd. I wonder if they don’t use real steam. Like when you see “Cheez” on non-cheese products or when you call something TrackR because, you know what never mind

@ExtraMedium idk, equally pragmatic as a water vessel

@ExtraMedium what’s the coolest sticker on your Owala?
@jouest Might be the little “Keep Trekkin’” sticker that matches the color and model of my Crosstrek. Though I like all of the stickers I have on it.
@ExtraMedium you go, crosstrek
@ExtraMedium
Lord Stanley >Stanley

Stanley, and his mug.
@rockblossom is this…a golden girls reference??
Wait, aren’t we doing Tervis anymore?
@sammydog01 we participate in a very competitive carpool line.
I don’t go there. Have gotten much better mugs here.
@Cerridwyn you’re never gonna make it big on TikTok with this attitude
@jouest Thank the Lord and Lady
For mugs that fit in the vehicle cup holders of everything we drive, this is my go-to:

@chienfou the TSA confiscation pile is just Meh for third shift airport security

@narfcake my circa 2005 bubba mug was 64 oz, what a time to be alive
I got a knockoff Stanley (aka Big Dumb Cup) from Temu for eight dollars, mostly ironically. But man, that thing keeps ice for days.
@kostia irony is all fun and games until you kinda like the thing.
/showme stanley steamer
Stanley + water in another form
@mehcuda67 hmm. the bot did better with that than I would have guessed.

And you clean them with a Stanley Steamer

@jouest well that’s odd. I didn’t check. I was going for the pun.
@jouest @Kidsandliz I’d bet they just can’t use the original name because of copyright © but I like your theory better.

@ironcheftoni I see my beloved Tervis there. They still get used daily. The bubbas not so much.
Good thing I don’t do car pool anymore.
