Sprouts Farmer's Market
3There’s supposed to be a new Sprouts grocery store opening up sort of local.
I vaguely remember someone saying they bought cut vegetables at the salad bar for cooking because it was cheaper and easier. Maybe I’m misremembering.
Why should I drive out of my way to go there? Or should I skip it?

We love Sprouts. They have the good stuff (kinda like a Whole Paycheck or Central Market, but often (usually for some items) cheaper than Mega Lo Mart. What’s not to love?
We don’t do the salad bar thing, mostly on account of my celiac and that sort of shit is dangerous. But their produce is good, in my experience.
@joelmw alright. I’ll check out their produce for sure.
We are Sprouts fans as well. Mostly for produce, but they also sometimes have good deals on hormone-/additive-free meat & butcher shop. Similar in many ways to Central Market (many hard-to-find & organic items), but not as spendy.
What is your favorite grocery store now?
If answer whole foods trader Joe’s or moms organic market you will like sprouts
If answer safeway giant ect no you won’t care for it.
@CaptAmehrican Similar to Natural Grocers too (generally Sprouts has better selection, but we love both–and some things we only find at Natural Grocers).
@CaptAmehrican publix. It’s two minutes from my house. Trader joe’s is 30+. I enjoy going there if I’m in the area but I won’t go out of my way. I seriously miss their Lentil Curls though. Whole foods… No idea. Fresh market, 15-20 mins, but too expensive. Aldi’s is by my work but I’m not too fond except for occasional trips. No Safeway’s in Florida.
@RiotDemon publix is like safeway. Sounds like you will feel so so about sprouts but definitely not go by regularly since out of the way
@CaptAmehrican I’ll definitely check it out. Thanks.
actually, I shop Vons (Safeway) most of the time. My first time in Sprouts I hated it. They are misnamed. they are not a farmer’s market in that none of their produce is local (I can get more local at Vons!, much less if I had a whole paycheck to shop in) (And socal, so lots of local)
That being said, with COVID, I started going there. I decline most of the time to buy meat there. It’s hugely overpriced. That being said, produce is not, and if you pick and choose it can be good. and their selection of heirloom produce is better than most. They carry a few items I enjoy - good frozen burritos to eat for breakfast.
It is not a good place for most people to go for routine shopping, but if you are a shopping market rotator, it might be worth added to your rotation.
Oh, and do not expect to be able to buy everything you want there - it is not for a one stop shopper who doesn’t buy things on line.
@Cerridwyn I’m curious about the produce. Online it says it gets all their produce locally or within 500 miles. So I’m wondering if it will have a good variety.
@RiotDemon
never hurts to look
500 miles for us is mostly form Mexico
@Cerridwyn I agree their meat is overpriced. But in my region at least, they do a weekly sale flyer with some pretty decent prices. Boneless skinless chicken breast for example is often on sale for $2/lb. That’s about the lowest price most grocers here offer on sale for previously frozen breasts. Occasionally Sprouts even does $1/lb. And the quality of the meat is far superior to Walmart and Fry’s (the local Kroger affiliate). Fresh, never frozen, trimmed lean… excellent.
@Cerridwyn I generally only shop for produce at Sprouts. They tend to have the best (sale) prices and sometimes good non-sale prices, particularly if you need smaller quantities (one onion or potato rather than a whole bag). In the before times they also had good sale prices on some bulk items and had a small bulk spice section. Sadly now their “bulk” items are all prebagged and don’t seem to ever go on sale. But they still have good prices on produce.
Sprouts does the made-to-order sammich thing at the deli counter. In the locations near me they use high quality ingredients and the freshest veggies and bread. Reasonably priced, made-to-order and very tasty. What’s not to love?
Although through the duration of the Coronapocalypse I am not consuming any fresh food I didn’t prepare personally, if the virus ever subsides I’m looking forward to those sammiches!
@ruouttaurmind I so miss eating out. When this is over I plan on a very nice dinner out with friends and family.
Everything ruoutaurmind said - good deals on chicken, although I usually get the thighs; good prices on produce, usually. Not cheap for packaged stuff. I like their bread, and at least at the stores here (we have 2 Sprouts - Sproutses? - in town) the sliced deli meat is my favorite, really good roast beef and ham. Like Cerridwyn I go there only some of the time.
I kinda miss going to the Southlake,TX location, when my brother lived in North Richland Hills (his regular stores down there went between Wally, and Tom Thumb)… but he moved “home” 4 years ago… now the nearest locations for me are an 8hr drive away (metro Philly, and Herndon, VA)
