I’m a huge Overwatch League fan but occasionally I like to watch football teams shooting a hole in one.
OH I LOVELOVELOVE SPORTS.

Hockey. I am wanting to keep an eye on the Sharks, I think it’ll be an interesting season.They have had Thorton & Burnsy obviously, but now they have Erik Karlsson (stars were supposedly going to get him but that changed?) I’ll also be cheering for the Knights–have to back the Flower. Stars as well, out of obligation for the City and Tyler Seguin just got an 8 year contract with them so I kind of want to see him do good or tank it. Lastly, the Candiens & Caps because of Jesus Price and Holtby.
TLDR, Sharks, Knights, Stars, Canadiens, Caps.
@riskybryzness I’m just glad that Karlsson is out of my division. Sad to see what’s happening in Ottawa, even if they are rivals.
@riskybryzness I was a fan of whatever team Patrick Roy was on so I’d watch those teams. Man, he was good.
@riskybryzness @Targaryen LOVE PATRICK ROY! He is literally the reason I ever started giving a shit about hockey(50/50 him and the first two The Mighty Ducks movies.
Hockey! YAY! After being in the toilet for so damn long, my team (Toronto Maple Leafs) actually have a genuine chance to make a deep playoff run. I’m so damned excited for this season.
@lichme That’s the weirdest part about sports to me. I know it’s a matter of money/management typically for these issues. However I find it odd how “bad teams” just seemingly come out of no where to become good for 1-3 seasons.
@lichme I am betting the Leafs are going to go pretty far this year. I know it was a while ago, but I wish Kessel was still on that team. I really, really hate the penguins.
@lichme http://www.cityfolk.ca/the-phil/ is a really great web comic. Kessel is a national treasure.
@Targaryen @riskybryzness It happens a lot, both ways. Great teams that go on to absolutely bomb, and crappy teams that make a deep run. Although in Toronto’s case, by no means did it come out of nowhere. It was a long process and the entire team was rebuilt from the ground up after seeing the team collapse over and over again. I would have loved to have kept Kessel, but getting rid of him was necessary to put Toronto where they are now. Management in TO has been absolutely amazing since the Shanaplan has been put into place.
This is probably my favorite hype video that was put out around the rebuild. It does a good job of showing both the history, and the progress.
@lichme @Targaryen That’s a really awesome video–getting hyped for hockey all over again. Is that Ilya Bryzgalov they scored on at 3:36?
@riskybryzness @Targaryen
I think it’s Steve Mason from this goal
@lichme @Targaryen oof. Mason didn’t even stand a chance against that, that was clean.
@lichme @Targaryen Goalies are some of my favorite players. I scream gasped when fleury did this:
@riskybryzness @Targaryen
Although hilarious, I feel bad for Cam Ward
@lichme @Targaryen Those kind of goals hurt to watch–the ref truly should have called it since it wasn’t in view–but that is an amazing shot regardless.
@lichme @Targaryen There’s always going to be a bit of randomness/luck no matter the money pouring in. See also: Leicester City. (Cynically, that year was as much “big teams messing up” as it was “Leicester being good”, but still, amazing.)
@Kawa @lichme @Targaryen Please enjoy the new Philly mascot:
Is anyone into “odd” sports or hobbies that are competitive? Just curious. I know a guy who does the drone racing for instance.
@Targaryen I knew “of” a guy here in Tulsa who was into World Jai Alai when Telex was headquartered here. He was murdered in his county club’s parking lot. I’d stay away from Jai Alai if I were you.
@Targaryen I want to do the drone racing, just haven’t put together the time and drive to get decent at it.
Back when drone.horse was a thing a few of us built racers and shared our builds. That was a lot of fun.
@Targaryen I FUCKING LOVE BATTLEBOTS
@reclaimercube I just started watching battlebots again. There was an episode with a burger bot and the hype guy said “I hope you’re not smack-tose intolerant.” It really renewed my love for the show.
@riskybryzness it was the black announcer wasn’t it? He does so many puns an episode it’s almost sickening
@reclaimercube Faruq Tauheed, Yeah. He is hilarious.
I watch whatever football game is available on Hulu plus that has the most of my fantasy players. Which is often none.
@sammydog01 I started to think I was the only person here who likes football. I love fantasy and watching almost every game I can.
@reclaimercube I like football. Especially if it’s raining and they’re wearing white pants.
I feel like I don’t have time to follow sports. If the local pro teams are doing well, I try to jump on the bandwagon and catch some games.
I’m that weird young American person into European soccer that hangs out at your neighborhood bar but doesn’t drink Coors, Bud, or Yuengling.
Back in 2006 I watched the World Cup because a coworker at my internship desperately wanted someone to talk to about it. Back then, Germany played as well as Belgium did earlier this year (instead of being a total embarrassment, the way Germany was this year.) After some cursory research I learned my favorite player from that German squad played for FC Bayern Munich, who I’ve followed ever since. More here on Reddit, which I wrote before the World Cup final in 2014.
I cared a lot more in 2010 - 2013 ish, when I had more time/used it to procrastinate in grad school. It’s hard when games are in the morning! But I try to listen to Champion’s League games (basically an inter-Europe playoff system) when I can - most of those are in the afternoon during the week, so if I’m subtle at work, I can do it. I also go to the New York branch of Bayern’s fan club at least once a season, which basically means weekend brunch in a Bavarian beer hall!
Plus I went to Munich, which is otherwise not a very exciting city, specifically to tour the stadium:
I have so many more pictures, including from the “Fan Experience” club history museum, but you get the picture.
Next goal: actually attend a home game, from the “South Curve”, the part of the stadium filled with ultra fans and dancing and singing and all that good stuff. Some games they even take out the seats there so everyone’s standing like a rock show! Hope to do it in the next few years.
@Kawa Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :breathe: oooooooooooooooooooal!
I need to pay moar attention to the sports ball.

Not interested in any of it.
My favorite competitive sport is shopping for a deal.
College football!
Specifically:

Have you seen this? This is a soccer team that is so bad, that their fans made up this entirely random cheer.
And the crowd goes wild…!
Buffalo Sabres - Rasmus Dahlin joins Jack Eichel - hope to see the playoffs this year.
Tottenham Hotspur - Not looking too bad.
Buffalo Bills - *
*My mother always said that if you couldn’t say anything nice to not say anything at all
@jksquared I have a Buffalo Bills league championship sweatshirt somewhere. If it hasn’t disintegrated yet.
@sammydog01 Find it and wear it proudly for the next week!
@jksquared Good game, right? And after I ditched the only Bills player on my team. Go Bills!
That one where the people take the smaller thing and put it through the bigger thing. And all the people watching get totally irrational like they are personally playing and it somehow matters. That one’s the best.
You okay, @unksol? Did you need to talk to someone?
@unksol Is there some new TV show about infidelity I’m missing?
I’m in Tampa.
Atlanta Braves

Miami Dolphins
and, as mentioned before
and, yes, I know Tampa has teams but I stick with my original loyalties. No bandwagoner here!
I played whiffleball recently.
I did bring shame upon my ancestors.
(aside: so that is the utility of paternal “catch” playing. Never would have guessed it’d be applicable as an adult.)
@InnocuousFarmer

Hand-eye coordination: you aren’t just born with it - you have to practice. Somewhat surprising how often it comes into play throughout life even outside of sporting activities.
