Spooky Goat day eight! SPOOKY ART
8SPOOKY ART
I was SO tired last night I couldn’t even think to come up with a topic for today, and didn’t want to just post a link to Psychomania (that’s my backup, I’m saving it). When I woke up this morning, the free movie channel was showing The Picture of Dorian Grey, and as I stood before the tv, overwhelmed (as always) by a deep sense of gratitude that I am close enough to the Art Institute of Chicago to be able to see the titular painting in person if necessary, I realized that’s my topic! One painting by one man, Ivan Albright.

I’m having trouble thinking of other images right now, I can only come up with surrealists or late Medieval artists. And then people I follow on Instagram. Ernst, di Chirico, Magritte, all good. Bosch, anonymous cathedral sculptors, yes.
Oh wait, now I remember artists and occultists Austin Osman Spare, who started Sigil magic, and Marjorie Cameron, who was active with Jack Parsons and Kenneth Anger.

And an artist of whose work I’ve seen one picture in one book and I can’t remember the book. Or the picture title. But it was very cool and I did a web search and figured out how to spell her name. Fay Pomerance–mid-century, very cool work.
The Sixth Palace of Hell

I’m going to come back and add to this, I think, so I put “spooky art” in the title so it’s easier to find. I should have been doing that all along!

Dang, I just unexpectedly got the afternoon off work, and now I’m feeling like I rushed this and could have done a better starting job. Oh well.
@mossygreen I’m embarrassed to admit I’ve never seen the 1945 Dorian Gray film & had never seen the Albright painting, which I’ve just learned was done for the film. I’m a fan of spooky/scary/creepy art in general, so i appreciate the topic, and more specifically, thank you for making me aware of the Albright work, i wish i lived as close as you so i could see it in person. Btw, IMO, i thought you did a great job, you introduced me to several artists i hadn’t seen before in one brief post!
I’m loving this thread! It brings me back to my HS days in fine arts with my teacher sister Elizabeth, she must’ve been 70 years old and stood 4"8’!! Boy was she talented!!
@Lynnerizer Yay! If you think of anything cool, post it!
Oooo, I wouldn’t have remembered his name but I agree, Ivan Albright is super creepy; he kind of reminds me of the Neue Sachlichkeit painters. I find Francis Bacon pretty disturbing:
Goya can be terrifying:
Looking up the painting, I found this :
That Marjorie Cameron bird made me think of Odilon Redon - sometimes creepy, usually just kind of fantastical:
@Kyeh
That first one is pretty fucked up.
@Kyeh Oh, I LOVE Odilon Redon! His lines are so delicate and his blacks so sooty.
The ‘H’ in H.R. Giger stands for Halloween of course!

This is the image I was looking for.
At least nobody has posted the “Goatse Pumpkin” image. Definitely NSFW.
I like the people who add scary stuff to paintings they find at thrift shops.
I don’t have actual artistic talent but maybe I’ll try it with a simple ghost or something.
A few more:
@sammydog01
That would be fun! I hope you do, and post the results.
@sammydog01 Get a painting done by someone with no artistic talent!
@mossygreen @sammydog01 Or you could DIY by getting a cheap paint by numbers kit & “customize” it! That’s an entertaining hobby i hadn’t heard of til now, thanks for posting it!
Japanese classical art has some pretty scary images (and contemporary art too.)
I like these monsters:
Aaaaa - I just started following the Instagram account for “Frieze” art magazine and the first image of theirs I’ve seen is this! Brian Catling, who just died; I’d never heard of him but this is creepy as hell!
@Kyeh Lol… I’m sure he keeps his opthalmologist busy!
