Spam Guards

Just wanted to say cheers to the Mediocre staff for whatever mostly invisible safeguards you have in place to keep this place relatively spam free. Even the now-vaporized thread by our friend from drone.horse (where I originally wanted to post this sentiment) was created by a real person who is, however misguidedly, trying to be relevant.

It seems like this place doesn't get hammered with spam about dick pills, making money quick, and fake luxury goods like most of the open comment boxes on the Internet. Whether that's good planning and mostly invisible safeguards, or good work killing it fast before we see it, I'm glad you guys have a good system that doesn't require us all to jump through hoops every time we post, and keeps most of the crap away.

Pretty sure we had one thread here made by a bot. But everyone had a party in it so it kind became productive anyways? Maybe spam bots have invaded but they're indiscernible from regular mehites?

Stopping spam isn't as impossible as it's sometimes considered. One easy step: restrict new accounts so that they can't post links right away. The occasional very determined spammer might still get through, but it stops the typical spammer M.O. of using throwaway accounts that post one time and disappear.

- @Starblind This right here plus using blacklist sites help a ton! I'm sure there's an actual name for this but what I mean by Blacklist sites are sites that use site owner data to track spammers and create a blacklist of userID/IPs. You can then apply this list to your site to block/ban spammers before they even create an account.

It might also be that Meh is still too new and at 170,000+ (haven't noticed another number being shared) users, not yet big enough to have hit the spam/scam radar screens.

- @carl669 Spam isn't bad, especially if you've acquired the taste in childhood, by living in Hawaii or by being on a US Navy ship pretty much anywhere on the globe. Fucking Spam Thursdays (but hamburger Wednesday was awesome and more than made up for it). No - I didn't serve in the Navy but we've been on several Carriers and Cruisers for work. I've been to the Spam museum in Austin, MN (more than once) and love it there - it is pretty much right on the way to Mayo in Rochester depending on which way we go up and if we are seeing family first. When we drive it from time to time, it is a nice little diversion for a couple of hours and the gift shop is amazing. My son loves the place - and the Spam.
