Space-X is going to try to land a rocket on a boat tomorrow
7I find this stuff fascinating, so just sharing. You my or may not be aware of the Space-X push to make their rocket's first stager reusable which if successful will do a lot to reduct the cost of getting stuff up into orbit. That's what the whole grasshopper thing is all about.
They are scheduled to launch tomorrow at 4:47 AM, the live stuff starts at 4:30. The landing is only given a 50/50 chance at this point and that part won't be broadcast (I don't think). I plan on staying up tonight to watch.

Since space stuff isn't covered well in the general media, here is a little context.
This is a two stage rocket. The primary mission is getting the second stage, a "Dragon spacecraft" to dock with the International Space Station, drop off a lot of stuff and pick up a lot of stuff. After the Dragon is loaded with the stuff destined for Earth, it will separate from the ISS, descend, and land in the ocean. SpaceX has done this before.
The new part is that after the two stages separate, the first stage, a "Falcon 9", will attempt to land on an unmanned ship in the ocean. If this succeeds, Falcon 9 launches will be cheaper sooner. If this fails, it will be equivalent to the previous launches where the Falcon 9s landed in the ocean. Either way, they will analyze the flight data carefully, and improve the system.
The embedded video above shows a test flight with just the first stage. It went up a kilometer and came back down.

@hamjudo That is so cool. I used to check to see if the light was on and what the temperature of the diet coke was... A number of years ago I programmed an SX processor that sent signals via RS232 to my linux box. I had to write the serial controller part in assembly. That was fun. I went to look for the refrigerator site and it was gone. Alas, all good things must come to an end eventually.
@Headly I checked with the phone company before I moved. They said DSL would be available at the new address. When they went to install DSL they said oops, can't do it. The other options were for running a server were out of my price range. So I turned it off.

Launch was good, Dragon made it to the proper orbit. The first stage found the boat (a tremendous achievement) but had a hard landing.
@Headly I had a feeling it wouldn't work the first time, but I bet they learned a lot and will come closer on the next attempt.
