So … original Moviepass was a fraud intending to inflate the stock price.
5A notable fine and some prison time for the perps.

HBO has a documentary (released last May before the recent resolution of the criminal case)

They still offer a MoviePass, but it limits how often a user can go to the movies each month.
1-3 movies, I don’t know how the new version works beyond that)

@sammydog01, didn’t you make use of this for as long as the original version was viable?
What’s your take on what’s happened since?

I really enjoyed the HBO (sigh, Max) documentary on this
This explains why the poster in the lobby of the Edwards Marq-E was proudly proclaiming their pass as “real”.
@agnesnutter At the end they wouldn’t let you cancel or watch movies. Good thing is was cheap.
@agnesnutter @sammydog01
I got a years service thru Costco, so already discounted. Then, after it folded, they gave a prorated refund! Movie pass was absolutely phenomenal for me
I loved the original movie pass and kept it until the tragic end. By then they decided I shouldn’t watch any movies at all. But I got my money’s worth overall.
Regal unlimited is great. It’s $22 a month at my theater and I can watch as many movies as I want, with certain exceptions. I’m up to 79 movies this calendar year and that doesn’t count stuff I’ve seen twice. Premium formats cost an upgrade fee but I’m happy with standard.
They give me a ridiculous number of points for free popcorn as rewards for seeing movies which I would have seen anyway. I bought myself a Garfield popcorn bucket because it has a neck strap and I’M AN ADULT AND CAN USE ANY POPCORN BUCKET I DAMN WELL PLEASE.
I’ve worn his poor little face off.
@sammydog01 Yes I was also one of the 1st original Movie Pass user, I got it before CostCo was offering it. I think I paid $70 for unlimited use.
New the end, I remember going to a Regal cinema to try to use it. Nope, that was the first sign that they were having trouble.
Then the limited you that you MUST use the App to active your card. Then if the movie was not listed in the app You could not see it Via Movie pass.
I remember driving up to a cinema found the movie I wanted to see was listed, then I got a call from a lady friend. Then after I got off the phone, I looked to reserve the film & it was gone. I think only a certain # of folks could see the film.
I have NOT tried the “New & improved” version of Movie pass. even though I get a lot of emails from them "Join for only $1 for the first month!
@sammydog01 It looks like you might be a Kid in an Adult body… hehehe So am I, even though legally I am over 50. Hey being a Geeky Nerdy person has it’s advantaged, it keeps you young!
It was good for a while and then all of a sudden nothing was available, all kinds of restrictions and you could cancel before the year was up but they were keeping your balance. I was getting texts and emails for the new version but…Never forget, never forgive!
@nursermk Same here!
Yes I had a Movie Pass when it 1st came out! I ws there to the bitter end!
Have looked at the Regal Unlimited (3 levels) & the AMC one too. They are all at least 10 miles one way to get any of them. Plus now a new small chain of theaters have opened up 1-1.5 miles from me with rock bottom prices. I can see a film for $6.29 day & $6.50 nite. First Run films!
They all have these infuriating limits and gimmicks designed to intentionally make it obtuse.
Use points! Different tiers of theaters, which means most of them cost 50% more than we advertise! And SoCal and NYC cost even more… just because we say so!
Ugh. Just make it simple.
