Was she the musical act or is this more perpetuating the same bullshit about the wrong presidential elect was voted into office? Get over it already and stop. Democrats are acting so fucking ridiculous you would think they’re Republicans. What’s sad is her ruining a great song. She’s still going to “play” Hillary every chance for a COMEDY show that’s nowhere close to as funny as it used to be. They do songs and montages like this when one of their feature performers dies. Hillary didnt die. Nor did America. So no, not one tear. Maybe if she did “Everybody Knows” without the Hillary getup on.
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long-stem rose
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you’ve been faithful
Ah, give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you’ve been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows
And everybody knows that it’s now or never
Everybody knows that it’s me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah, when you’ve done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe’s still pickin’ cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows
And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it’s moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there’s gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows
And everybody knows that you’re in trouble
Everybody knows what you’ve been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it’s coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows
@sammydog01 no shit. Leonard Cohen. But the SNL video is Kate McKinnon dressed up as Hillary Clinton playing on the heart strings of his passing, doing a horrible rendition of his song, then saying she’ll never give up at the end. Clearly referencing the divide this election has created. Enough already. Do a tribute to him. Not this crap. Although I’m sure this is exactly the kind of thing Leonard Cohen would love, so who knows.
@ELUNO This thread was literally asking how people felt about the performance. Im not siting here trolling. When did I say anything about how other people feel? I just thought it was in poor taste to “honor” a dead man by throwing in political views. Plus IMO it was a crappy cover. So no it didn’t make me cry. It pissed me off.
@medz yes!!! My thoughts exactly. Why are trump supporters so upset that we’re not all falling all over ourselves with joy? I’ve seen so much hate and nastiness in the past eight years from Obama haters and now, magically, with Trump’s win, fairy dust has been sprinkled all over the land and we should all hold hands and sing kumbaya?
Guess what? Ain’t gonna happen. Now these folks are getting a sample of how many of them have been acting the past eight years.
School kids chanting “build a wall”. Punks shouting " n****rs go home!" Punks driving onto college campuses, telling students of color to get off of the sidewalk, because that’s what will make America great again. White guys walking into a trailer park demanding the people will live there show their immigration papers.
Nothing like this happened because Obama was elected. No, that brought the gorilla jokes and go back to Africa and your daughters look like monkeys crap.
And now, we’re just supposed to all get along because trump? SMH…
My husband said all along, that trump’s supporters are scarier than him. I agree.
@lisaviolet yes. They “took back America” by getting Trump elected. Now they’re just trying to find something else to be pissed off about. Those type of people aren’t happy unless they can complain about something.
@lisaviolet I don’t speak for either political party. I will say all the things you talk about in your post represent the .0000001% of losers in our society that get 99.4% of attention in social media or, American media in general. Please don’t allow yourself to fall into the true basket of deplorables. That basket has no party affiliation. But, instead is a stinking pile of humanity that truly holds back the true wonder and awesomeness of America. But, hey, that’s the stuff that sells soap. Reality is different than your summation of hate and ugliness in America. The America that I and those I associate with is one of fierce loyalty for our Commander in Chief and Executive Branch leader. A person who is elected in a Democratic process. A person who represents our Constitution. This person is not a male, a female, a race, an ethnicity, or any other term for the way the human brain can conjure up a way to categorize a human being. This person is the President of the United States of America. I swear my life to support and defend America. I have and will put my ass on the line for you. And, my beloved America and our way of life. If you don’t appreciate it, you probably haven’t had to risk everything to defend it. Oh, by the way, SNL is a TV show! They are making millions of dollars selling commercial space. It’s not church, or a community outreach, or a theoretical socialism course.
@accelerator I don’t argue that America is strong. I am fierce for America.
But someone was telling people that it wasn’t. And they believed him. And they’re acting out now and people are getting hurt. I am not fierce for that. I don’t care how small the fraction of people are who are doing it, people are getting hurt.
@lisaviolet True. The real deplorables are at work. Some are wolves in sheep’s clothing. Some are mentally ill. Some are just assholes. But, the majority of Americans are just honest, and loyal Americans.
Mudslinging during political campaigns is nothing new. It is disgusting. Especially in our relatively new, instant media sound byte society. The one line zingers are the way to get your advertisement out effectively. Our ADD, what’s trending now, attention span reacts to it. And that is not party centric either. Nothing makes it right. Our reaction to false and hurtful rhetoric will determine how far it goes. I choose not to react to any of it. I’m not your normal consumer. Analyzing information and deciphering facts from BS is my go to.
I believe it is awesome to hear your voice and I respect your resolve. Obviously, you are not one of the deplorable and that makes you part of my team! Thank you!
@lisaviolet You are so right. I am soooooo sick of seeing the Racist, Homophobic Republicans protesting and rioting for 8 years. They hated Obama so much that they torched cars and destroyed and looted businesses. What I hated most was seeing them pull black people out of their cars and beat and rob them. I remember when I made my 7 year old son leave the house and wear a sign because he voted for Obama at the school election. Yes those 8 years of rioting and throwing rocks and bottles at police made me realize how out of touch the Republicans are. Thank you for opening my eyes.
@lisaviolet I think what some people don’t understand is that the Trolls that post stuff in news forums is not an accurate reflection on a whole political party. A very small minority post that racist stuff (or post stuff in general). Just like judging the Democrats over the examples I posted earlier wouldn’t be an accurate reflection on that party either. For anyone to say that voting for a particular candidate makes you just like the small minority, of the worst examples you can find, of supporters of any candidate, is disingenuous. People flocked to the Trumpster because they are sick of people telling them that what they think isn’t important and that they should just shut up. They are sick of people telling them that if they disagree with someone they are somehow evil, homophobic or racist. I think this video sums it up quite nicely.
@kevin8er Obviously the solution is to double down on the “white men are evil” mantra, and the top news outlets wasted no time in getting started. Hillary should win by a landslide (again) in 2020!
@PlacidPenguin
There is some good stuff out there ya know. The SNL debate parodies were priceless.
My fav stuff from the old days would include “Star Trek”, “land shark”, samurai-anything, “Julia Child”, “Mr Bill”, Buck Henry, Steve Martin, any of the Gilda Radner monologues, “point counterpoint”, and lots more. And that’s just the first few years.
@sammydog01
Yeah Jeopardy. The recent “Black Jeopardy” with Tom Hanks was amazing. I heard it talked about in odd places and with unexpected seriousness.
If we start to list all the good stuff from SNL, we’ll be here a while. Which would be just fine.
@jbartus
Some younger people know all - and some don’t some know some acts that are incredibly familiar to people my age (have met people who have never heard of Roy Rogers). So I never know who will get recognized or not.
As of late I’ve noticed that my mind wanders off too fast. I pretty much have about 15 seconds to compose a text or make a post here before I either forget about it, it forget what I wanted to say.
Kate McKinnon is quickly becoming one of my favorite people, and her talents seem to be unbounded. I loved her in Ghostbusters 2016, love her Hillary impression, and holy shit, she plays piano!
@sanspoint McKinnon also plays guitar and cello, per IMDB. Not much use for cello performers, so I’m glad she acts. As of today, GB 2016 is in that irritating place- not in theatres, not streaming on NFLX, but is available via DVD or online rent. I’m too cheap to buy it, or rent it.
@OldCatLady GB 2016 is worth seeing. I won’t say it’s better than the original (which I am also a huge fan of), but it’s an interesting take on the same basic story and stands on its own merits. There’s room in my heart for both, and a big part of why is Kate McKinnon stealing basically every scene she’s in. And Leslie Jones is no slouch either. And Chris Hemsworth is Chris Hemsworth. And Chris Hemsworth’s butt is Chris Hemsworth’s butt.
@sammydog01 I have now, thanks. I love live musical performances, and the next time they do a US tour, I could actually drag myself out to see them. Fun if Kate were to play with them.
@triplebud lol. What are you trying to prove? That your two messages before someone pointed it out to you had something to do with him and his honor even though you made absolutely no mention of it and were in fact attacking people for other reasons? but nice try…
It’s so sad Leonard Cohen died. He wrote great music that’ll live forever.
I haven’t watched SNL since the 70’s… I’ll have to tune into it & check it out. They always did joke about politics & they had fun during elections.
Rowan & Martin also had great bits during election times.
That was one of those perfectly tuned moments on SNL, and it resonated far beyond the normal scope of the show.
I know several Trump voters who loved it. In a very red state, haven’t talked to anyone who reacted negatively and a number of Republicans who found it moving. JIC someone thinks the song choice and performance was very partisan, there are plenty who don’t.
Also don’t think Cohen would have objected even a little.

I don’t know how many others there have been, but I remember that the first SNL after 9/11 opened with Paul Simon singing “The Boxer.” Not a knee-slapper.
@Yoda_Daenerys
I don’t know re Paul Simon’s character in particular; except that he’s an interesting guy.
Simon went to college with and was a friend of Andrew Goodman, one of the three civil rights workers murdered in Mississippi in 1964 in the Mississippi Burning murders. According to Simon, this had a large impact of the direction of his early composition.
The Simon-Michaels friendship is pretty durable. They do a lot of favors for each other. (Think what you will of rich powerful successful artists offering media access to each other. I can think of people I don’t like far more.)
Don’t know, but i would guess that Simon appeared on SNL after 9/11 in response to a personal request.
Re: Simon vs Van Zandt: in terms of artistry, I’ll take both.
I’ve been trying to think of where to leave this, and I gave up. I’m just putting it here. It’s fun, and from when the world was just a bit simpler. Dress rehearsals can be a wild time. :-} (Sorry about link. Youtube usually gets the best of me.)
I had to quit listening to it. It was too much. :-{
Me too, I actually didn’t want to watch tonight because of having to see Kate deal with the loss but this was beyond perfection.
I don’t get it, is there a joke?
@inlinefourpower See RIP thread.

@f00l
Got the recent “Black Jeopardy” sent to me. Watched it.
Doubt I’ll watch anything else from SNL.
@PlacidPenguin
Before you write SNL off, at least watch the Star Trek skit. Pls pls pls.
I think yahoo video has it? Will try to find a link.
Here on Vimeo
For people too young to recognize, John Belushi plays Kirk and Chevy Chase plays Spock.
@f00l
For whatever reason you think I’m writing it off, I’m not writing it off for those reasons.
@PlacidPenguin
You appeared to be writing of the watching of clips from it. Mea Culpa for my misunderstanding.
Hope you watch the Star Trek bit anyway.
@f00l I’m confused… are people supposed to be too young to recognize the actors? O_o
@jbartus
Some younger people know all - and some don’t some know some acts that are incredibly familiar to people my age (have met people who have never heard of Roy Rogers). So I never know who will get recognized or not.
@f00l
After about 3 minutes my mind started wandering down some unwanted paths.
@PlacidPenguin
Ok. You tried. Thx.
That was a common dramatic pacing way back when. Now we’re all wanting fast fast fast.
Got a similar prob. Mind wanders off… Often I multi-indulge on media so as to be able to tune in and out of whatever is too slow
This practice makes me stupid. Or way way stupider than previously. Whatever.
@f00l all the episodes back to the george carlin, andy kaufman inaugural episode are on hulu, last i checked
@f00l
As of late I’ve noticed that my mind wanders off too fast. I pretty much have about 15 seconds to compose a text or make a post here before I either forget about it, it forget what I wanted to say.
@f00l Loved the news for the hearing impaired with Garrett Morris in the corner of the screen yelling what the anchorman was saying.
@PlacidPenguin i get that way sometime too, generally under some pretty specific circumstances
@Yoda_Daenerys
The problem is, it’s more than “sometimes” for me…
@PlacidPenguin
Neurologist? Or let it alone?
@f00l
The latter.
That song can make me cry any time I hear it, without any of the recent extenuating circumstances. It’s just one of those songs.
@pitamuffin Yeah, I just don’t see how people can sing it straight; I would get choked up.
@OldCatLady You have obviously never heard of these guys.
@sammydog01 I have now, thanks. I love live musical performances, and the next time they do a US tour, I could actually drag myself out to see them. Fun if Kate were to play with them.
@sammydog01
Ran across the 2 cellos on Amazon a few years back. They are so much fun.
I own a few mp3 albums of theirs.
@f00l They’re insane, but in a precise and skilled way, with lovely accents. Nice to look at, too. I know, I’m shallow.
@OldCatLady Check out Apocalyptica too. They are a Finnish cello metal band composed of classically trained cellists. This is one of my favorites.
@eluno I’m nowhere near a new fan… but nice try
