I had a Fitbit Surge for a bit. Fitbit apparently doesn’t know what “waterproof” means, and the “smart” features were pretty lacking, so that didn’t last very long.
Then I got one of the early meh offerings of a Martian Notifier. It was basically what I needed in a smart watch: a quick glance at whatever notification I was receiving. I’m an entertainment technician, so there are plenty of times when it’s not convenient to take out my phone (hands are full of tools/equipment, I’m working at height, etc), so this was perfect. But it didn’t have activity tracking, and I got tired of wearing two devices.
So I got myself a cheapish Garmin watch. It does all the same basic notifications, but on a fully digital screen so I can read a BIT more, does activity tracking and can track my runs/bikes with its onboard GPS.
I’m not sure I fully understand the allure of a true “smart watch,” but maybe I’m just not the target audience for one.
Since I’ve gone thru a few fitbits and Garmins and they all poop out on me after a few months I figure any smart watch would have the same sad fate for me

I have a Pebble, a Martian Notifier, and that damn Olio I got in a Fuko. They are all in a drawer. I sometimes think about pulling the Martian out, I actually like it, but i can’t get in the habit of wearing a watch. Plus I don’t know where the charge cable is, and I don’t feel like looking for one/modifying one to fit…
I considered getting a Fossil Q but even with steep discounts on black friday they were too expensive.
I’m still saving up for a fun dumb-watch from Tokyoflash.
@PlacidPenguin@RiotDemon ok, not that weird. I don’t want to obligate myself to think of something really interesting. It’ll probably be a fruit or something.
where is “have one because tech-savvy spouse/friend hand-me-down and am okay with it but probably only use 1/10th the features, just like the smart phone also hand-me-down”
Kind of want an Apple watch out of mild curiosity about my heart rate, and maybe some kind of convenience around podcasts or something, eventually, but my wrist doesn’t accommodate watches very well.
@altoidbox Me too. I’m a stay at home dad. A Smartwatch is nice; I don’t have to cart my phone around. But, I don’t get many important messages so it isn’t a tragedy if I miss one. Plus, I LOVE watches and I much prefer wearing a nice looking analog one.
I decided to get one of the Martians sold here. It was too cheap to pass up. It is truly Meh. It is analog but it is ugly. It doesn’t work well with the way I use email so all I use it for is SMS. I’d look for a better one but better tech = higher price. Obviously, I shop here so I’m cheap! Ergo, no really nice Smartwatch. But that’s fine, the Martian I bought here suits my Meh needs!
So, I’m with you: I have one and feel Meh about it. (@mediocrebot, you needed another answer to your survey!)
I have an LG that does not have the “phone call” function. So I bought a Martian M Voice on an earlier sale and now realize I really never use it, or care for it. So now I am happy with both the watches. But the Martian has a much better battery life than the LG.
I was skeptical of smartwatches for ages, including after the Apple Watch was announced. But, since the original Pebble was so cheap ($99), I decided I’d put my money where my mouth was, buy one, and give it a try to see how I felt.
Even though the Pebble didn’t work great with my iPhone, I rolled with it for a couple months and loved the parts that worked right. Enough so that I ditched it and bought an Apple Watch. Three years later, there’s still an Apple Watch on my wrist every day. I even use it for sleep tracking.
I have a Fitbit Charge 2 that I love. It tells me who’s calling and who’s texting, which is just enough for me. My wrists are also small, so this is about the only smart watch I could wear.
Got an LG G Watch shortly after it was released.
The following year I got a Huawei Watch.
(The poll excludes people who own at least one.)
@PlacidPenguin
Which one did you like better?
@DVDBZN
The Huawei Watch.
Looks more natural, and has hardware/software improvements (naturally).
Meh got me hooked on smartwatches three years and six days ago.
Watch out -/actually they are still in stock

Any watch that tells me time accurately is “smart” to me. All the other functions just distract from its designed purpose.

@Oneroundrobb oh, I forgot about my fuku smartwatch. I’ve never worn it, so I kinda forgot about it.
I have one and its too big for my tiny wrist.
@RiotDemon I too have tiny wrists. I hate how big most watches in general are.
@RiotDemon @Seeds
Hah. Neither of you have seen anything until you see how small MY wrists are.
@PlacidPenguin @RiotDemon We’ll have to have a small wrist exhibition.
@RiotDemon @Seeds
I’ll watch from afar.
@PlacidPenguin @Seeds banana for scale?
@RiotDemon @Seeds
For
thicknessthinness?@PlacidPenguin @Seeds yes.
@PlacidPenguin @Seeds
@RiotDemon @Seeds
Well if we’re not going to use a standard unit of measure…
@PlacidPenguin I’m still trying to figure out where my measuring tape went.
@RiotDemon
I thought we were going to use bananas.
@PlacidPenguin fresh out.
@PlacidPenguin @RiotDemon Oh man, I’m in and I’m guna use something fucking weird.
@PlacidPenguin @RiotDemon ok, not that weird. I don’t want to obligate myself to think of something really interesting. It’ll probably be a fruit or something.
@RiotDemon @Seeds
Found bananas?
@PlacidPenguin @RiotDemon I have no recollection of writing this… hold on though, I’m sure I can find something for scale.

Here you go: Tiny Wrists, Crooked Fingers

@PlacidPenguin I actually have bananas sitting on top of my stove right now.

I kind of want a smart watch, but I can’t justify getting one while working in a warehouse.

I don’t think I’m missing much.

I really like having a smartwatch, but starting this summer I won’t be able to wear one at work, so now I’m investigating nice dumbwatches.
I really like my Pebble! … I wonder what future me would say to past me… RIP Pebble.
