Slack Chat - Avast Update Problem
1So I just updated my Avast Antivirus software and now have no access to Slack at all on any browser (just continually loads). It appears that this is a known problem and Avast has found the glitch and is working on a fix according to this Avast Forum
One user at the end posted what they claim is a fix but it did not work for me. I know this place is full of techies so I was wondering if any one has a work around for this without disabling Avast? Thanks.

Uninstall avast. Why are you using it? Depending on your version of Windows AV is included. I use the built in (downloadable for win 7)
@sohmageek Are you speaking of Windows Defender which is built into Windows 7. The reviews of this protection alone are horrible.
@mfladd no. Microsoft security essentials
@sohmageek they are the same. They just renamed it Windows Defender.
@mfladd I've never had an issue with Microsoft Security essentials on windows 7 nor Defender on 8 and 10. I suppose I browse more safely than others though... I switched from AVG after they got real pushy and deceptive about forcing the paid version on you when you had simple program upgrades to install. Basically trying to trick old people into installing a paid version trial and not allowing you to go back. Sketchy.
@medz I agree it is annoying, I just push past it now that I am use to it.
@medz I saw a computer with a ransom locker on it that MSE totally missed. Even Microsoft's bootable disk that was supposed to fix it kept missing it. Symantec had no problem with it, though. That was when I stopped recommending MSE.
@mfladd "I agree it is annoying. I just push past it now that I am used to it."
@sohmageek @mfladd alternatively just accept that the internets are inherently unsafe and we already have your SSN and all of your dickpix
@Lotsofgoats Call me a baby, but I just preemptively gouged my eyes out at the thought.
Get a mac
@ceagee wise ass :)
@mfladd I second the get a Mac
@mfladd You are welcome!
The web shield whitelist fix they show is the logical way to make this happen. You might be missing a host. I'd whitelist *.slack.com and *.slack-msgs.com as a start.
Unless the whitelist feature is broken in avast, in which case, turn it off. You should be able to just turn off web shield.
@djslack This seems to have worked for me. I thought the site was down at first. Thanks!
@djslack Thank you! I deleted my old ones and re-entered just as you had them and it worked! I knew someone here would have the fix.
I blame at @jaremelz for this avast clusterfuck. I also blame you @djslack for the fact I will have to put up with her nonsense again on slack. I should have left well enough alone :)
@mfladd Bitch, as if. I've had a taste of freedom from you, and I ain't going back!
@djslack Great, he's back. It's the end of the happy world I'd come to know this morning.
I think this goat owes you some blame
@jaremelz No, I'm pretty sure this is all your fault somehow.
@djslack I will accept blame only for the fact that I didn't successfully rid myself of @mfladd forever.
@jaremelz I'm not about to take any of that blame.
Accepted or not, the blame is sitting on your doorstep, goat.
@djslack By helping him fix the problem, you have caused mine to grow tenfold. Now I am back to putting up with his shit.
@jaremelz Need a plumber?
@djslack funny, the avast whitelist worked for my chrome browser, but it is still blocking firefox. What is up with that? Not that it matters as long as one brower is working for slack.
@mfladd if the avast filter works by intercepting dns, maybe Firefox has cached the results and isn't checking at the moment? If it's actually intercepting http traffic, that's weird because it shouldn't care what app is requesting it. Unless it has an application specific firewall.
I haven't used avast in several years, when I did I don't think it had all this fancy web filter stuff in it. Sorry I'm not much help on this part.
As goat, I consider this to be my greatest accomplishment of the month. You're welcome, everyone he talks to!
