I just want to warn everyone before they buy these. I bought a 4 pack of their regular storage containers that claim to be water tight but are far from it. The clips don’t put enough pressure on the gasket imbedded in the container to make it water tight. They are nice containers for things other than soup.
I’ve microwaved red sauce and a few other things such as food with chili oil in them that stains most containers, these ones have yet to be stained.
By the way I read the reviews. Be careful about only putting things that are low fat level in them as apparently the fat melts the inner liner and food fuses to it.
@Kidsandliz Don’t have the steamers, but my other sistema products have been great. I bought a bunch last year when Office Depot was clearing them out after Christmas. They have been remarkably good about not staining from tomato products or the fats from reheating pasta with cheese/alfredo sauce etc.
@chienfou The fat melting stuff I guess depends on how hot someone makes it and how much fat in it (eg bacon vs meat in a sauce). In either case I’d like some glass ones as there are concerns about the BPA replacement chemical.
In for 3 on my first meh. Going to purge the family dreaded tupperware cabinet and replace with these for the sole reason: they have the SAME SIZE LID!
I recently got rid of my ancient (stained and cracked) food storage containers and got a new set, but they are so nice I don’t want to use them lest they get stained and cracked. So I am tempted to get these because I wouldn’t be afraid to use them, but the idea of storing stupid plastic steamer baskets that I’ll never use is ridiculous (I don’t own a microwave and I’ll never bring raw food to work to steam for lunch), and I don’t want to buy something just to throw a third of it away. Long story short, thanks, meh, for helping me get past my issues with using the nice things I own.
It has been about 10 days since I broke my streak of 438 Meh’s in a row (total 800 Meh’s as of today today). I didn’t Meh the Fukuburo bag. Just forgot to do it. At 22:55CDT, I remember thinking, “I should make sure I Meh’d yesterday.” But I didn’t. And then when 23:00 hit and I went to Meh I realized my fuck up.
I am back to 7 in a row. Do I try for 439? What is the longest streak out there? Do I give up on this addiction? At 800, I have only missed about 18-20, I think (too lazy to do the Excel math). Most of those were in the early days when I was figuring all this out. Is anyone perfect from day one?
I will admit that it took a bit of extra time to figure out what exactly I was ordering.
front page image shows 4 (complete) items
next picture shows one ‘set’ in blue.
third pic (exploded view) shows 3 ‘pieces’ (lid, steamer, bottom)
the normal ‘math’ for these would list this as 12 piece set… (4x3)
So, what was I getting for my ‘4 piece set’?
1] four individual complete items
2] four random pieces from the sets (2 lids, a bottom and a steamer? 2 steamers and 2 lids? one tall bottom, one short steamer, one lid and one short bottom? etc)
It wasn’t until I got to the spec page for ‘what’s in the box’ that I realized it was, in fact, the entire ‘12 piece set’… WOW now that was a surprise!
Thanks meh for counting these in a “real use” manner!
(crap… auto list creator won’t let me number the items as 2 different lists! had to edit for clarity)
I recall someone asking this question in the forum during a prior sale, can you actually steam something in the microwave? It seems like the food would just cook from the microwaves before getting steamed when the liquid boils.
@Stumpy91 In the reviews apparently you can steam but some complain the steamer is too close to the bottom and so not enough water in there unless you want the food item to be in the water. One solution would be to heat up the water and then put the food in. Actually thinking about it that is probably why the thing is designed to have really shallow water - so it boils faster.
Looking forward to trying this as an Dad on the go, who does care to do dishes, can cook and eat out of the same container one for dinner and one for desert for my son and I, on the way to scouts.
@chienfou I also had some trouble getting it to load, and by the time it finally did I didn’t feel like watching it anymore. The recipes are cool though. Thanks, @dtwsportsfan!
I still feel residual paranoia about microwaving in plastic, even though credible sources (such as Harvard Health, first hit on the subject) say it’s not a big deal. The ones in hysterics about it are notorious bullshitters like Mercola.
Something that DOES seem to be agreed upon is that plastic wrap should not touch food while being microwaved. As a kid, I loved those Campbell’s chunky soups, and I’d often microwave some in a bowl covered in plastic wrap so it wouldn’t splatter, as per the directions on the can. But I was a kid, so I sucked at making it taut, and I remember always peeling the wrap from the hot hot surface of the soup. I still remember the smell of it, always that weird pink-tinted stuff that got popular in the 90s. Mmm-mmm good!
Then I got breast cancer at 23, which basically doesn’t happen. Coincidence? Probably so! Ha ha. Still, that couldn’t have been good for me.
I’ve always been told not to microwave containers made of plastics…as in the inert ingredients of the plastic is a petroleum derivative, and so for that matter, I only use American made glass products to microwave or steam. In fact, I don’t own a single plastic food container. I realize this makes me breakable, but I’m wondering if anyone else shares this thought…
Back to my broken record … BPA’s biggest crime was getting caught. Dozens of other combinations that are just as skanky but don’t have the reputation.
Reminds me of the Ford Explorer / Firestone debacle, where Ford replaced the Firestones with tires that were actually less safe across the board but slightly more safe in the high-viz category of roll-overs.
I bought these before. I like to put food in them. I have not yet steamed in them. The storage version has the latches on the body which seems more stable.
I have other sistema products that I love. They have been great for bringing food to work for my wife and I. These will be a versatile addition to our ‘fleet’ and will also make good gifts this Christmas. In for 2 sets.
I prefer the Steam I can use to play Prison Architect
@ELUNO I you’re going to go “yard”, you should play “Mount Your Friends” instead.
@mike808 BEST.GAME.EVER.
Oh yeah…some like it hot!! But no BPA?? Always taking something away, and then wanting to charge you more.
@eeterrific BPA makes the food taste better anyway.

Can you sell glass (like pyrex) ones please?

@robbiebb Yes, that is definitely a bonus. I only wish they stacked a bit better, but still I love my sistema stuff over all.
Wow! I just realized today is my meh anniversary…
@chienfou happy anniversary MF
Purple!
At least they aren’t Cleveland Steamers…

@TRD I hit a streak of 222, forgot and now I’m cured! I’ve gone 2 days without checking, and don’t care.

Oh, fine. Maybe I can steam up a young-knowledgeable-robin for dinner. (I really only bought because purple.)
@Pony lots of robins in today’s order numbers…I got artistic-rotten-robin.

@currawong oh no, sorry to hear. That’s very concerning . Thanks for sharing
I love these things and use them all the time. I think the purple tastes especially good.
Nothing like a 4 pack of steam boxes… Oh the possibilities.

Been waiting for these to come up again. The short containers are the PERFECT height for a sandwich and a variety of snacks and such.
Toss the “steamer” platforms in a drawer, these are great multipurpose air tight containers.
Two for Xmas presents for the rents.

Typo? Meant “non-BPA-free”?
