@Kidsandliz When I got my alarm system that made robot help calls, that company strongly suggested or straight up said you should call yourself first.
This was a good idea because when we set it up it caused false alarms when the wind would blow curtains into the middle of the room setting off the alarm.
@Stallion I have it…i didn’t get it on Meh but I love it. It works on cellular service so no worries about cut lines. It also has a battery back up if the power goes out. It was easy to install…although I would recommend you use the screws and not the sticky tape…the tape isn’t that good. I’ve had it over a year now and I like it.
This is not the latest gen model, for what it’s worth.
I can’t speak for this one, but I just bought and installed the newer one last week. It DOES install in less than an hour and couldn’t be easier. I’ve tried a lot of DIY alarms, and so far, this one has been the best by a mile. It’s dead simple and really does the job well. Accessories also have a lot of range (at least on the newer one anyway), which has allowed me to use it in my business through concrete walls and everything.
We have had a SimpliSafe system (no camera) for several years and when we moved we added keypads and more room sensors. It works well and is pretty easy to install or add to, as it is wireless. We had no false alarms with the original setup but had a couple after moving to a new house, with none lately. The service is far cheaper than the ADT we used to have and seems to work well. There is no contract either, so you can quit at anytime. I believe they have a new system, so are likely selling off the old one (which we have).
@ruouttaurmind From what I can gather the old sensors will not work with latest generation equipment (and maybe vica versa), which is problematic. Thru what I could find the best deal based on what you are getting is the one I posted below in this thread. It has me tempted.
@ruouttaurmind Thanks. Interesting read. Though it also points out the numerous flaws with numerous brand systems. I am more worried about smash and grab, than the serious criminal. “This isn’t the house you are looking for” (at least in my neighborhood). I am just looking for a little more piece of mind when I am away. I am lucky I live in a small town next to parks/recreation fields which have constant police presence - station is down the road.
From what I can find generation 3 has over-the-air wifi firmware update capability. I need to find out a little more. But this deal has sparked my interest. But I don’t think I will be taking this deal based on the fact the generational equipment accessories don’t mix (and that it is fugly
@mfladd IDK if you’re looking for a little more piece of mind with a monitored system, or the audible alarm and notifications of a self-monitored system, but…
I have been on a mission to fortify my home for the last 18 months after the disastrous burglary I experienced in October of 2016. I shopped out monitored and self-monitored systems and couldn’t find something that fit my needs.
As a temporary measure, I installed a bunch of D-Link wifi PIR motion sensors and four D-Link wifi sirens. If motion is detected, all the alarms in the house start squealing like piggies, and I receive a push notification and email. Although the mobile app and configuration options are limited, and the app is cumbersome, I have been absolutely satisfied with the functionality this configuration provides.
I started with one motion sensor and one alarm as proof of concept. I expected these to be like every other inexpensive (and even many not-so-inexpensive) wifi device on the market: unreliable. However, in the 8 week test period, I didn’t have a single false alert, and 100% success for test and accidental incident.
I moved forward with more sensors and alarms in June of last year. My success rate continues. Not a single false alert, I’ve never once had to reset a device because it’s stopped working, and 100% success for test and accidental incidents.
The good:
Easy to install, requiring only a AC outlet, and a mobile app for setup.
Reliable.
Limited IFTTT support (it has IFTTT integrations)
Flexible (easily moved to a new placement, or a new home).
Zero failure rate in over 10 months.
Works for local alarm even if your internet connection goes down (of course push and email won’t happen, but at least the audible alarm sounds).
ZERO lag time between motion detection and alarm sound. I mean… like ZERO delay. No worries about an event occurring, then minutes later, after the cloud processes the incident, finally hearing the alarm. It’s instant. In my experience, push notifications are very timely. When you’re located inside the same wifi network, it appears the app may communicate directly with the devices?
The bad:
Although the app is intuitive, it’s poorly organized, making it cumbersome to use. It lacks key features which would make the system infinitely more useful (such as a master “on/off” switch and scheduling feature).
Limited IFTTT support (It’s not a highly supported device in IFTTT, but if you can Java, you can create your own features to interface with other IFTTT devices and functionality).
In addition to the D-Link stuff, I’ve also installed several wifi cameras connected (via wifi) to an NVR, some standalone wifi cameras, a wired camera/DVR system, a SkyBell video doorbell, and a few other things which shall not be disclosed in a public forum.
I continue my search for a true self-monitored wifi system which delivers the functionality I seek, but in the meantime, the D-Link PIR/Siren system has given me some piece of mind.
@ruouttaurmind I recall that break-in hell you went thru. Thanks for your experience-knowledge download! I’m snagging a copy over to my Evernote memory bank since the bio-version is overloaded…
I’m a believer in the scare them out technique. But our lots are small enough that no brazen professional would hang around for fear of a nosy neighbor identifying them.
We also have exterior motion-sensing security lights that probably piss off the neighbors. But we’ve (mostly) convinced them it also helps their security. We used the same argument for our barking dog.
Does this work with Facebook?? I mean, will it protect all my important information…like when I post what I had for breakfast, will it ensure the government doesn’t see it?
Is this like most networked shit?
First it tells you repeatedly it can’t connect.
The when you finally manually enter all the network parameters and get it to connect, the fucking app won’t work?
@2many2no It does not connect with your wifi. It communicates among units with its own system and it calls the monitoring system with its own cellular connection (you do not pay for the cellular usage when you have the monitoring plan and it does not use wired phone lines). The base station that does the calling has a backup battery so it will work for a while if the burglar cuts the lines or if the power goes out for another reason.
@mfladd While it does have the security camera and one extra motion sensor, it has three fewer window-door sensors and does not have the very loud extra warning siren or the panic button.
@andyw It has the same number of window/door sensors - 6. You are correct about panic and siren. But if I am going to have it monitored I don’t care about the extra siren. I would rather have the extra motion sensor than both of those.
What’s Included
1 key fob
2 motion sensors
6 entry sensors
Base station
Keypad
@mfladd Sorry-I guess I can’t count-you are right, they both have 6 window/door sensors. We have the extra siren as it is much louder than the one in the base station and it allows us to have the base station in a room where we might not hear it at night. The siren can be used outside, if you want to annoy your neighbors. We didn’t get the panic button, as you can use a remote for that or use a keypad. We did get extra motion sensors to accommodate multiple rooms since it is much easier to install one motion sensor than multiple window sensors.
@dilloke So… “cut ties” = hate? Maybe it was just a business decision. Maybe they realized not doing business with the NRA will benefit their company. NRA members be taking stuff too personally.
@medz hahaha and that answer makes sense to you? Classic circular reasoning.Good luck. I can tell you they lost me because of it and I’m sure there are others who care too.
@dilloke Businesses tend to go with popular opinion trends to make more money. If you find yourself with fewer businesses that support your agenda, it’s quite possible that your opinion is that of the minority. I own firearms, but I would never waste money on an NRA membership. If you like freedom and democracy, you should see why special interest groups like the NRA are bad. Why not let the people vote on matters rather than having big companies pay-off politicians?
@dilloke@medz Because the other guys have been paying off politicians for years. We didn’t make up the rules of engagement, but we’re damn sure stuck having to play by them.
@medz Impressive to someone I suppose. Funny, I don’t remember being asked. I don’t suppose they asked a certain group or anything. I’m sure the polls are fairly administered and portrayed in liberal media.
@dilloke I wasn’t asked either, so my opinion would cancel yours out, anyway. Conservative media is just as bad. Saw one recently saying that guns are used defensively between 300,000 to 2 million times per year. Turns out that figure came from a survey of only 5000 households… That’s some serious extrapolation!
I’ve sunk over $1500 into this system excluding the monitoring subscription, and wouldn’t pay another penny to them for more hardware at this point. No upgrade path to SS3, shitty customer service, problems that never get resolved, unreliable app (that we need here)…
Nope. Nope nope nope. Fuck it.
I’m looking out for a replacement system. I’d be interested in SS3 if there was a buyback program as they had SS1 > SS2.
@armchair Replying late to this because I went back to read the forums - thinking about the SimpliSafe on MorningSave… Anyway… Pet safe motion sensors tend not to be “cat safe” because cats are heat-seeking devices. They park themselves in the sun or in front of a heating vent, soak up a bunch of thermal energy, and then walk past your “pet safe” motion sensor displaying the IR signature of a thing that’s a lot bigger than a cat. I know of no real fix for this other than to forbid your cat from sunbathing or otherwise heating itself up.
@accumulator I caved and upgraded to SS3 with a 40% offer. The newer sensors are a lot better at not being triggered by cats, and the entire system Doesn’t Suck™ like the previous generation did.
…that said, the very enthusiastic gymnast that is that particular cat was finding ways to trigger the sensors by managing to get too close. I’m still impressed by his ability to scale some of those bookshelves. I moved the SS2 sensors to the ceiling and the false alerts dropped, but they’ve been non-existent with SS3.
We don’t let our cats sunbathe or otherwise enjoy themselves when we’re not at home.

Price is highway robbery?
@Kidsandliz No its not bad compare to other wifi alarms hat only alert YOU this system contacts police for you in case of real issue
@AiraCobra @Kidsandliz Some towns require alarm permits, so be sure and check with you local authorities.
@Hanky Thanks but not buying one. I’d need a concealed camera if I have to move back into hud when this job ends mid May.
@Kidsandliz When I got my alarm system that made robot help calls, that company strongly suggested or straight up said you should call yourself first.
This was a good idea because when we set it up it caused false alarms when the wind would blow curtains into the middle of the room setting off the alarm.
That being said that problem was resolved.
This thing any good?
@Stallion It is
@Stallion I’ve had it for over 4 years. Absolutely worth it.
@Stallion Ye, this is a good price.
Hey @snapster, I’ll give ya a dollar if you make someone fix your broke down hoopty-ass server.
heh heh. hoopty ass-server
This is not the latest gen model, for what it’s worth.

Can’t say enough good things about this system.
Hey meh how about selling one of those hidden security cameras hidden in a clock or something. But not one that is meh stars, rather a good one.
Who needs a security system when baby arm is on the job?
@sammydog01 I think baby arm might be the bad guy in this scenario…
We have had a SimpliSafe system (no camera) for several years and when we moved we added keypads and more room sensors. It works well and is pretty easy to install or add to, as it is wireless. SimpliSafe has BIG advertising bucks. What are they doing in Meh?
@hchavers theyve rece tly released a new setup so tgeyre liquidated their older models which MorningSave and Meh bought up
@AiraCobra @hchavers Drinking tonight?
@AiraCobra @hchavers @shahnm Probably ju st using. A smartphone likeme.
Will you be selling a security system for the holes in the security system?
@thismyusername That’s what the fidget spinners are for.
FWIW, SimpliSafe doesn’t offer any option for self-monitoring the system anymore.
@ruouttaurmind How was that done, by phone app or what?
@phendrick Yup. Push notification and email. Now they only support those options in association with their monitoring plans.
@ruouttaurmind So if you drop the subscription it stops working? Or only sounds a local alarm?
@duodec Only sounds a local alarm. Or at least this gen. The Third Gen system could be different, but I doubt it.
@ruouttaurmind From what I can gather the old sensors will not work with latest generation equipment (and maybe vica versa), which is problematic. Thru what I could find the best deal based on what you are getting is the one I posted below in this thread. It has me tempted.
@mfladd Read about the “irreparable” security flaw first, decide after considering how that may impact your sense of security.
@ruouttaurmind Thanks. Interesting read. Though it also points out the numerous flaws with numerous brand systems. A- this isn’t the current generation
B- google search indicates there were recent deals online around $300
C- it was liked at Best Buy https://www.bestbuy.com/site/reviews/simplisafe-shield-wireless-home-security-system/5823304
Do you have a security System to protect my most valuable possession? That would be the Simplisafe Shield Security System.
Does this work with Facebook?? I mean, will it protect all my important information…like when I post what I had for breakfast, will it ensure the government doesn’t see it?
@eeterrific Also, does it know to beef-up security when I post vacation pictures to facebook while I’m away on vacation?
How much for the knife?
Is this like most networked shit?
First it tells you repeatedly it can’t connect.
The when you finally manually enter all the network parameters and get it to connect, the fucking app won’t work?
@2many2no You seem troubled tonight…
@2many2no Do you own this?
@shahnm I’m better now.
I had a few of the 12 ounce batteries I store in the refrigerator.
@mfladd No, just other networked equipment that doesn’t work.
@2many2no Ha…I wasn’t sure. Late, last night I read your post differently. Now that it’s morning I see what you meant. Ugh.
@2many2no I’ve had this system for years, super solid.
@2many2no It does not connect with your wifi. The base station that does the calling has a backup battery so it will work for a while if the burglar cuts the lines or if the power goes out for another reason.
@andyw No wi-fi? And no app?
Then it may actually reliably work.
At this time, though, I think I will continue to trust dogs and weapons over electronics.
For $369.00 you can get this latest generation SimpliSafe system at Best Buy. They give you the HD camera for free with it.
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/simplisafe-shield-home-security-system-white/6114606.p?skuId=6114606
It does cost more, but it is far less ugly.
UGH…this Best Buy deal has me tempted.

I like mine so much, I am going to sell it and buy the second generation (this is my first gen keypad)…
Simplisafe = NRA hating company (just FYI)
@dilloke So… “cut ties” = hate? Maybe it was just a business decision. Maybe they realized not doing business with the NRA will benefit their company. NRA members be taking stuff too personally.
