I grew up with parents who used ventouse, which is the French term for suction (cupping). They had 8 to 10 small glass globes that they would put a small piece of cotton impregnated with alcohol in, which would then be lit on fire. After extinguishing the flame they would flip them over onto your back. Was supposed to be good for a cold. All I ever saw anybody get from that is a series of round hickies on their back. Never could figure out how it got to be such a thing in the US with athletes.

@chienfou I had a picture book from Japan that showed someone getting that done to them. I thought it looked creepy.
