I think I’d be terrified to have a kid now with a 20 year runway and 60 to retirement. It’s looking rough

@unksol we actually planned to not have kids. We love kids but were worried about raising them with the way the state of the world was going even 20 years ago. But well as Dr Ian Malcolm likes to say “life finds a way!” As the Englishman would say “Be careful! Babies live in the bottom of wine bottles!” Even if they weren’t planned, we can’t imagine life without them.

But we’ve also been educating ours on for a very long time is that credit cards are for emergencies only, 1/3 of the allowance they earn from doing chores immediately goes into savings and when they start working, a percentage will come to us for room and board. Now what they don’t know is whatever that money is will go into a savings or investment account for when they go to college or later in life. Even still, it is worrying thinking about their futures.

Yeah, in the forties, my older (half) sister’s father was killed in Iwo Jima (WWII).
Meanwhile, my older (half) brother and sister’s mother abandoned them, leaving my dad to raise them as a single parent.
They all survived and led reasonably happy adult lives.

But young people today have a breakdown if their latte doesn’t have enough foam.

So many losses during that era. I tell people all the time if it wasn’t for the American military I’d probably speak German instead of French.
That being said, I meant giving birth in Europe in the early 40s. You think your future is bleak HERE now, imagine what it was like in occupied France or Poland… Under nazi occupation.

And I’m sure NO ONE was family planning during WWII because of the thousands of miles the sperm would have to travel. And you don’t get pregnant in a war zone. Or under threat of imminent death.

WWII ended. There were plenty of jobs and babies. Despite the massive damage.

Technology is not going to end. Social media should have been regulated if anyone in Congress understood the Internet. Or the damage.

Now honestly I think they are full of bullshit with their grand predictions and burning money. That would be funny. If not for the chicken shit they are pulling with IPOs and accelerated index listings to make them part of everyone’s retirement accounts.

That is entirely viewed through the rose-colored glasses of hindsight.
I can assure you that no one in my family foresaw this as being only their personal future at the time it was happening. Society as a whole was totally jacked up in Nazi and Japanese occupied territories. It took the willingness of a lot of people to step up and risk everything to change that outcome. No amount of hand-wringing was going to do that.
I guess my optimism (and view of history) drives me to believe that people will only tolerate so much before they see the light and correct courses. Each of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was a ‘man of means’ who risked his livelihood and life to establish a society they believed in. The result was world-changing.
Unfortunately we (as a society) are no longer all-in on those concepts and are letting ourselves be sold a bill of goods that presses the idea that life shouldn’t be so hard. I believe that people will eventually see the light and pivot back away from the current course and we will return to an age of reason and societal service.

I don’t really disagree with you. But… It’s not going well. Was trying to think of a difference along the indoctrination line, but other than it’s constant.

What it took to turn those countries around is also a problem. We already did it. What’s with the Uturn
