If the middle knife wasn't a bread knife, I'd pull the trigger. Throw us a santoku or utility or something. Quick search, 5 piece Shun set plus block for $269. Damn you, bread knife!!
@heli0s Someone gave me this set (sans block. wish I had the block) years ago. Best gift that came out of that relationship. Knives still going strong a decade later. I use them every day.
Pulled the trigger on the similar offer a few months back....I can't believe I waited this long to buy "good" knives. Absolutely love these. Although I paid $20 more...
Those knives look fucking awesome. Nothing beats a good quality knife set. Sadly this is far outside of my meager teacher salary budget. Alas, I will have to pass.
@studerc i was looking at a "chicago cutlery" set on amazon, $90. Great reviews and a larger set than this. much more affordable, check it out. Really any set you can find at a good price. I have no connection to them its just one I found that was affordable thats why I mention it.
@studerc Every few years our state legislature has to decide how much of raise to give themselves. Always contentious, always a waste of time. I think they should just set their salary to match the state wide median salary for public school teachers. It would give them something to think about when they are debating school funding.
@studerc Just don't unite in Illinois. Enough jokers voted that we should follow in the steps of Wisconsin, and now we have a union-bustin', education-destroyin', gov living in the Gov's Manse. That's a promise he kept; of course, no IL gov has lived in that house in Spgfld for YEARS, so it needed millions in repairs to make it livable. I think this gov used part of those $$$ to buy this set of knives at full price, because there's a whole lot of cuttin' goin' on hereabouts.
I own the chef's knife and the bread knife. I would buy this set if I didn't already own 2/3rds of it. Both knives top quality but I really like the bread knife.
I pulled the trigger then I unpulled it. I need new knives but it's just not budgeted for yet meh. Maybe if they are still there in the morning and I moved the budget around a little.
Tempting, but I just bought a few more Rada knives and they cut pretty damn well at an impulse-buy price. The chef's knife could be heavier but other than that I have zero complaints.
These are more impressive to look at, though, I'll give them that.
Saw fancy knives, went oooh want. Looked at price, looked at existing knife collection and block, went nope, lol. For my cooking needs, the knife block set I got about a year ago is great, and was 40 bucks. I consider myself a food nerd, but come on, as long as it cuts well and can be honed properly, any decent knife will do.
I had to get 3 stitches after accidentally slicing into a finger when I was cleaning it. Also had to get a tetanus shot because I had been cutting raw chicken with it. So yeah, be careful scrubbing your knives!
Why would I need these? I'm happy with the set of knives I bought at the dollar store. They're perfect for squishing tomatoes, bludgeoning apples and hacking loaves of bread into tiny, useless bits. And I'm never without several boxes of band aids around the house since I bought them. What more could any one ask from a kitchen knife?
Note that these have a lifetime warranty, and you can send them in to the factory for free sharpening whenever you want (just have to pay for shipping).
Check out my knives bro. You wouldn't understand. It's impossible to cut bread or even a tomato without these really expensive knives that only a REAL chef would use. You've probably never even heard of this brand of knives. They are so underground. I used regular dollar store knives until they became mainstream, so I switched to these. These are the best quality ever and the ONLY knife to use.......until i know 5 other people with them. Then its time to make ginsu ironically cool again.
Isn't 6" a little short for a bread knife? You want a bit of length for the blade to run through a loaf of bread since it's the sawing motion that does the work.
@RedOak Panini knife? Brilliant marketing! Before you can use the panini knife to cut your sandwich in half, you have to go out and buy a $132 Shun Classic Bread Knife the slice the bread from the loaf.
@saodell Always? When you consider the price of the Victorinox it wins because the Swiss control the price on that and it is very affordable. For an everyday working knife the Voctorinox 8 inch chef knife is excellent. But Shun knives are a whole 'nother level of quality aimed at chefs who want a very fine edge and a high level of control.
@bugdave Those handles are crap, except for the part about not slipping. Look, I'm not telling you what I think. I'm telling you what every review of the gear real pros use says. 2nd place is always some $25 German version that looks exactly like the Fibrox.
@donnameh not always ... I mean, if the testing is done by Wired or GQ or one of those guys, then they always go for fancier handles or four digit price tags or whatever.
@bugdave Somehow I couldn't edit that last comment .... I suspect that Victorinox designed those handles for easy sanitizing in a dishwasher, which is totally not recommended for finer knives.
@donnameh you're right about the quality for price. Im no hater, my fav beater pairing knife is theirs. The rest of my stuff is wustof Classic but that's because I can't afford shun.
@lera very good discussion at sweethome-as usual. Remember seeing talk about Shun "chipping"! in the sweethome article a chef says “…but i have found their edges to be prone to cracking. I have great knife skills (i teach culinary arts) and have never abused or done anything wrong with the shuns but have had my clasic nakiri and classic chefs both crackle in the edge. By crackle a mean a small prtion of the fine edge crack off.”!
@fjp999 You've got it exactly right. The best and the yet the worst part of a Shun knife is that sharp fine edge ... It requires a lot of care to protect that blade edge. It's somewhat of a commitment to own Shun knives. Some people are so determined to own themthough that they become proficient in regrinding the
Shun knives are excellent quality, one of the best brands. Serious chefs love Shun and Global knives (at one time I sold chef knives for a living although I mostly sold German knives). But... I wish the four piece set was four knives, not 3 knives plus a wooden knife block. I really don't need the block and 3 piece Shun Classic starter sets run about $189 on Ebay so .... I'm undecided about this set especially as the price is a little too high for me.
I have the Shun nakiri in this style. It's my favorite kitchen knife. I'd spring for this if the second knife was a bread knife and not a "panini knife." Seriously, Shun? When you're getting that specific, you're trying too hard. And the wooden block shouldn't count as a piece.
Hey, if any don't sell and you need to free up some warehouse space (I hear prime commercial real estate is worth $1000's per square foot. ) FeeI free to send some my way, I will sacrifice my pathetic residential(under $80/sq. ft.) space to help you out. You're welcome.
Sadly, I'm not at a point in my life where I feel comfortable paying this much for something when I'm perfectly fine with the low-end consumer versions.
If this was a deal for the Shun PREMIER 8" chef's knife, I'd be all over it. I've had that specific knife on my Amazon wishlist for several years now. As it is, this is a pretty meh deal. Still beautiful knives though.
This deal just doesn't SLICE it. I hope whatever is next on the BLOCK is a much SHARPER price CUT. I know they CHOPPED the price in half, but if I'm going to live on the EDGE it's for something better than that.
Edumacate yourself on the angle of the edge on these knives and what it takes to sharpen them (hint: not you). If you use a "standard" sharpener you will put a "German" edge on them, and they're no longer Shuns per se.
@Pufferfishy Wow, didn't even know a Ken Onion sharpener existed. That is one heckuva piece of equipment, thanks for that. You are right about the Shun edges. Most people I know who bought Shun knives sharpen them using a stone.
@unixrab It actually adjust from 15 to 30 degrees - so you sort of have to guess, but it's not hard to do. And it will even do ceramic knives if you buy the diamond belt. I have a knife that my brother gave me in the 80s, and it will still lop off a finger with ease today.
I have a set of Shuns and they are completely next-level. The "sawing" motion is completely unnecessary for bread - it is so got-danged sharp that the weight of the knife pretty much pulls it through the bread, even dense stuff like bagels. That said, if you are a person who is truly happy with the performance of a cheaper set of knives, you don't need these. But if you do a lot of cooking, and you've gotten frustrated over how your knives perform, or how they hold (or don't hold) an edge, or how they feel in your hand, I can't recommend them highly enough.
Am I the only one who prefers a vertically narrow paring knife blade so it can better be used to make small radius (delayed Pi day honor) cuts? Example: trimming the plasticy core bits out of an apple slice.
This paring knife blade seems fat and better suited to chopping.

shit
Is that really necessary?
@CrossIT Shit yea it's necessary.
@CrossIT Necessary? Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine? Well i do it anyway, because it's sterile and i like the taste.
@studerc not necessarily sterile, but yeah you can drink it and live.... pee breath...
@CrossIT It's beyond necessary, the most necessary thing in the history of necessity.
@SteveOOO Not necessarily.
@CrossIT It's hella yeah necessary if you're left-handed!
@CrossIT FUCK YES! FUCK YES IT IS! YEAH BABY!
Agh I've been wanting a new chefs for a while. kinda pricy but these certainly have a reputation to back it up....
@Susan buy the block, $60 on amazon. why not protect your investment and your fingers?
Hey, hey! These knives are lookin' pretty sharp.
@rhcurry02 groan
@rhcurry02 ba dum....tisssss
@rhcurry02 LOL THE CUTTING EDGE OF PUNS RIGHT HERE GUYS
@rhcurry02 Wondering why your pun has all these fools on edge?
@Stallion - They just can't hack it. Really, what's the point?
Pulled the trigger on the similar offer a few months back....I can't believe I waited this long to buy "good" knives. Absolutely love these. Although I paid $20 more...
This sucks.
Golly, those knives look sharp.
Appropriate name....shun. Because that's what I'm going to do with this deal....shin it.
@eeterrific Shin the fuck out of this deal...
Those knives look fucking awesome. Nothing beats a good quality knife set. Sadly this is far outside of my meager teacher salary budget. Alas, I will have to pass.
@studerc is that why you drink your pee, to save money?
@studerc tearchers unite! I'm in the same exact boat..
@studerc i was looking at a "chicago cutlery" set on amazon, $90. Great reviews and a larger set than this. much more affordable, check it out. Really any set you can find at a good price. I have no connection to them its just one I found that was affordable thats why I mention it.

I think they should just set their salary to match the state wide median salary for public school teachers. It would give them something to think about when they are debating school funding.
Thank goodness, I don't have to fret over those Cree LED bulbs anymore.
Pass -1
I was born in Hollywood. That said, can't meh this fast enough. And I'm a broke teacher, too.
@rumpkin Broke ass teachers unite!
These are great knives. If I didn't already own them, I'd buy them.
@krichar77 Well I don't already own them... Ya know, if you need an excuse ;)
Has there ever been zero sales? What's the lowest sales yet - I think we have a new contender.
@Superjimtendo well I was wrong, they already sold 2. Watch this sellout now so I look even stupider than usual.
@Superjimtendo this will sell out............ if they have 20 sets
@Superjimtendo 50 sold now at over $11k
Sorry it's 26 layers more of high-carbon stainless steel then I need.
What sorry ass loser would buy a block with 11 slots and just 3 knives? Imagine the ridicule.
@eyewerks he said slots. I like slots. huh eh uh huh huh...
@bugdave < eye roll > Imagine if I had written "slits".
And what knives do you have?
Can we please stop with the slot shaming online.
slots.. Is that really necessary?
Good thing I am not a celebrity as then I don't need them (grin)
I own the chef's knife and the bread knife. I would buy this set if I didn't already own 2/3rds of it. Both knives top quality but I really like the bread knife.
super mega ultra meh
The chef's knife alone pays for itself! I can chuck the the rest of my knives now except for my Wustoff 10". Oh mamma meh-a...
I pulled the trigger then I unpulled it. I need new knives but it's just not budgeted for yet meh. Maybe if they are still there in the morning and I moved the budget around a little.
if only i was a foodie hipster. my full sleeve, ironic beard and sweet scarf would love these.
These are the best kitchen knives money can buy. There is nothing better than Shun. However, wasn't this exact deal on meh in December?
@rkannese Meh: please do a sale on some other Shun knives so I can fill this knife block.
@rkannese The same can be said for many of the deals.
Tempting, but I just bought a few more Rada knives and they cut pretty damn well at an impulse-buy price. The chef's knife could be heavier but other than that I have zero complaints.
These are more impressive to look at, though, I'll give them that.

For my cooking needs, the knife block set I got about a year ago is great, and was 40 bucks. I consider myself a food nerd, but come on, as long as it cuts well and can be honed properly, any decent knife will do.
Did this deal just go from $200 to $220 or am I just losing it?
@heli0s I saw the same thing...is that allowed??
Knives like these are for the slightly obsessed
Sure.. $220 ...3 knifes and an empty wood block.. you're not even trying this time
This is the quintessential meh. 3 knives for 200+? Yea they're high quality, but are they also gonna give me a blowjob?
@BkrT knife BJ? ouch
maybe you can trade the useless block for one
I just need a bread knife. Oh well. Hoping for a bizarre mix-up at Meh Shipping HQ that results in one being added to my LED bulbs order.
You're selling more Kershaw knives already?
These knives are super sharp, obviously.
@TheTexasTwister haven't you heard about the knife BJs?
@Konraden I don't have a band aid for that.
Isn't 6" a little short for a bread knife? You want a bit of length for the blade to run through a loaf of bread since it's the sawing motion that does the work.
@grazapin ooo stop with the sexy talk, I'm getting hot!
@grazapin the specs say it's a panini knife, so there might be a bit of "stretching" the uses going on there. Would likely be good for bagels tho.
@RedOak Panini knife? Brilliant marketing! Before you can use the panini knife to cut your sandwich in half, you have to go out and buy a $132 Shun Classic Bread Knife the slice the bread from the loaf.
I would buy these, but then I wouldn't be able to afford food on which to use them.
In every serious professional knife review, the $37 Victorinox Fibrox 8" chef always, always, always wins. Did I mention, always?
@saodell but those handles are crap. Still the best bargain for grest steel.
@saodell Always? When you consider the price of the Victorinox it wins because the Swiss control the price on that and it is very affordable. @bugdave Somehow I couldn't edit that last comment .... I suspect that Victorinox designed those handles for easy sanitizing in a dishwasher, which is totally not recommended for finer knives.
I have no dog in this fight. Never used a Shun or the Fibrox. Just telling you what I've noticed.
@saodell They are made for different cutting tasks and aimed at different markets. they all have their good points and their drawbacks.
@donnameh you're right about the quality for price. Im no hater, my fav beater pairing knife is theirs. The rest of my stuff is wustof Classic but that's because I can't afford shun.
@saodell sold, thanks. Everyone else, good rabbit hole to go down begins here: http://thesweethome.com/reviews/the-best-chefs-knife-for-most-cooks/

Damn knife blocks....they make good firewood.
High-end knives through meh doesn't make sense. What are you selling next Brookstone massage chairs or Maseratis?
Bath
My bread comes pre cut, if I wasnt poor... I still wouldnt buy this set with a bread knife in it.
2 little 2 late ............ like "wooted-this-years-ago"-too late
Sell just the 8" chef's knife with wall magnet and I'll buy it. Other than that.. Meh.
Would like to see the Premier set again and without the bread knife, does anyone actually need a bread knife this fancy?!
I use one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EJ9CQKA/
But I also have a butt-ton of Shuns so it was worth the green.
@Pufferfishy Wow, didn't even know a Ken Onion sharpener existed. That is one heckuva piece of equipment, thanks for that. You are right about the Shun edges. Most people I know who bought Shun knives sharpen them using a stone.
@Pufferfishy NICE!!!!!!! is there a setting for Shun 16° angle I didn't see that on the dial...
@unixrab It actually adjust from 15 to 30 degrees - so you sort of have to guess, but it's not hard to do. And it will even do ceramic knives if you buy the diamond belt. I have a knife that my brother gave me in the 80s, and it will still lop off a finger with ease today.
@Pufferfishy very cool. thx!!
I love purple.
Would love to have cooking knives of this caliber. But there are too many knife-abusers in our house.
"How could putting them in the dishwasher possibly hurt them?"
"It's made of steel, how could using it to rap the lid on a bottle of pickles to open it hurt it?"
I'd have to keep them stored in the shop.
Front page says the paring knife is 4.5 inches long in two places but detail specs say 4 inches. Which is accurate? @Moose?
Am I the only one who prefers a vertically narrow paring knife blade so it can better be used to make small radius (delayed Pi day honor) cuts? Example: trimming the plasticy core bits out of an apple slice.
This paring knife blade seems fat and better suited to chopping.
@RedOak The paring knife is 4" and the bread knife is 6.5". Looks like the half inch got swapped on the front page but I've corrected that. Thanks!
I'm in when meh offers a Vermont American version of these knives ( without the saw blade please! )
Man, there are a lot of people in this thread who don't know the joy of working with a quality knife.
Too pricey for an impulse purchase.
Joey wants, joey is too poor. Holding donations for incredibly sharp knives.
Just what I wanted. Thanks Meh!
Kudos to Meh for selling a date appropriate item on the Ides of March.
Et tu, Shun?
I'd take a cheap Mora knife over these.
