@christinewas @kdemo @kidsandliz So broken jaw, surgery to wire it together was successful. If she will eat, she should make a full recovery. Apparently she did this to herself when she tried to run away from the mean dog and hit a storage crate. No puncture wounds, no scratches, just a broken jaw where she tried to go THROUGH the storage box. sigh

@Pamtha Get a syringe (cut most of the tip off so food doesn’t clog it) and force feed liquified food. If she is not eating she will get “fatty liver” and likely die. You can temporarily feed baby food gerber meat and juice baby food chicken or beef is better for them than the ham and gravy (although if they are refusing to eat at all the ham is better than nothing); this is the 3.5 oz jars - make sure that this is all that is in there - no mix of anything, no onion or garlic (those two things are poisonous to cats). Is not a complete diet but better than them not eating at all. It smells strongly and that will often interest cats who are uninterested in eating. Even if she eats it for a week or so the malnutrition for that length of time is a smaller threat than not eating at all.

They drink around 1/2 cup a water a day (and if you liquify her food obviously she will get water this way) so you may need to force feed that. Works better if you come in at the side of their mouth and aim for almost the back of the throat (goal is just before that). With her jaw wired obviously you will need to be careful that you don’t jam they syringe in too far.

The Science diet canned intensive care (or whatever it is called - has a picture of both a cat and dog on the outside) actually works better than commercial foods because it is really smooth. I add water to it as well (gets more water in them and is easier to feed them).

If she is actually wiling to eat then putting either in a big bowl (so her jaw doesn’t accidentally hit the side of the bowl and then due to the pain she avoids the food dish, or put it on a plate. Both are soft and runnier than regular cat food which will make it easier for her to eat with a broken jaw.

Cats eat about 6 or so oz a day unless they are really big cats. Since canned food already has water in it you can cut back on the 1/2 cup for that reason too. I add water to the the canned food to make it even more liquid. Pinch up the scruff of her neck to see if she is getting dehydrated (take her into the vet if she is). If that skin doesn’t drop back just about immediately then you need to think about more liquids (or the vet for sub Q liquids).

I hope the vet sent you home with some pain med shots to give her. If she is breathing fast or panting she is in pain. It is not hard to give a cat a pain shot.

If she goes more than about a day without eating much though it becomes starts to become an emergency as they can get into serious liver trouble after just a few days. I had a cat die this way some years ago and my vet didn’t tell me of the dangers and tell me to force feed that cat. He would have lived had I known. Saved 2 others of mine by doing this when it was needed. Good luck!

@Kidsandliz Thank you so much!! She is still in hospital, on pain meds. I called to check on her this morning (they are 24x7 at this specialty center) and she was resting well, still doped up with lots of narcotics, and enjoying being loved on by the staff in her buzzed state. They haven’t fed her yet, orders were to feed her at 8 am when the surgical staff arrives. They mentioned they would be starting her with baby food, like you said. Although she will likely be ready to come home today, i need to leave her in til tomorrow as we are out of town. Although i miss her terribly, that gives her more time with high quality pain meds and trained staff to make sure she is able to eat and drink well on her own.

Thank you for the tip on that Hills food. I was thinking i would have to water down finely minced cat food, but if there is one already more gruel-ish, that is good to start. You are so right about baby food- any calories are better than none. Theres also that Nutrical stuff, but my babies have always hated it and i think itd be too sticky for her sensitive mouth

I know ALL about subq fluids, I’ve had two kidney failure kitties. I can also talk extensively about diabetes and insulin, after my last kidney baby passed, i adopted the special needs diabetic asshole cat from the vet (they had claimed him when the owners said “just put him down” after letting him balloon up to 25 lbs). Thankfully he entered remission after 6 months. No more 2x daily insulin shots.

@Pamtha I still water the science diet canned food a bit (it is soft but not runny) and you can still clog the end of a feeding syringe if you don’t clip the end off a bit. Sounds like it is good she is there an extra day for her pain level. It is not hard to give pain shots to a cat if they will let you do that (I did that with a cat with cancer) - not really all that different than giving insulin shots. That stuff is SO expensive. Fortunately it can last 6+ mo (as long as it is still clear) even though the pharmacy says 1 mo. By the way Walgreens has a $35/year family plan that you can add animals to. Plenty of people meds given to animals and now they have some animal meds. Generally seriously cheaper than the vet - especially if the med is on the discount list (like they hyperthyroid med is -$10/mo at the dose my cat gets rather than $32 at the vet)

I have a 15 year old with diabetes (in remission), stage 2 kidney failure, a too small and inflamed heart (genetic) who is very much an old kitty who likely isn’t going to be around all that much longer. I had a second diabetic cat years ago that died from not eating enough. I’d guess he was in remission and I didn’t know from the diabetes so likely he was chronically mildly hypoglycemic (he was also hyperthyroid as is one of my current 15 year olds). Vet was not good with handling this and the internet wasn’t nearly as rich with information as it is now so I didn’t even know this was possible.

I also had one die of the cat cancer from vaccinations. Had she had her shots in her back leg rather than the base of her heck she could have been cured by amputating her leg. Instead it got tangled in her spinal cord at the base of her neck and eventually I had to put her down.

Goat cat (see photo in another post - she is balanced on the top of a door) is 5 and healthy, my other 15 year old looks like a little old lady but at least right now is otherwise healthy.

The 4 strays I had, 3 of whom my neighbor abandoned when they moved have finally found homes (and with one, had I not had so many cats I would have kept him - he was the single best cat I have ever had) and another little one, about a year old, who was hanging around a restaurant going up to people and trying to come inside. They were going to shoot her with a shotgun because she was “bothering people” so I took her back to where I was staying. A darling little girl.

I cut all sorts of corners to be able to keep my cats (the no kill shelter was helping me with the strays since I also volunteer there, good thing too as it took about 18 mo for three of the 4 to get homes, the other one only 8 mo). I don’t know what I am going to do when I am down to one when my 15 year olds die.

@Yoda_Daenerys No - just many cats over the years, some with/had significant problems.

@Pamtha PS the hills canned food likely you will need to get from the vet and Petsmart may or may not require an rx to buy it (can’t remember). Not especially cheap unfortunately and to get enough food each day they need to eat the entire can each day in smaller divided meals.
