Seriously cool mechanical (and some with motor robots) wooden kits
8I accidentally ran across these really cool wooden (and expensive but currently on sale) wooden kits. Some are mechanical (turn the lever) and a few are robots with motors. I got there by way of cool little rolling ball sculptures and now find I want a bunch of several thousand dollars worth of all sorts of different kinds of them. Too bad they don’t take monopoly money. They say for ages 8-10. I think they should be saying ages 8+.

Several of us got these kits when ThinkGeek had their fire sale.
@ruouttaurmind Some of us have also picked them up at Amazon recently. My train kit is supposed to get here today! I just need to clear a space to put it together.
@ruouttaurmind I have a bunch of the ugears as gifts and ones I bought for myself. Recommend them as fun to do!
Check out AliExpress.

My musical tastes are super weird, but I really want that hurdy gurdy!
@luvche21 Get a load of Compressorhead.

WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!?!?
@luvche21 Hey there potential Eluveitie fan!
@mike808 That was awesome! My only wish is that I could see a little more clearly what the guitarist and bassist were actually playing (I want to see their fingers move!)
I’ve been watching the making of videos for the Marble Machine X because I have a fascination with mechanical instruments. It’s the new and improved version on this one:
MEALS! DEALS! EELS! AWESOME!
@luvche21 @mschuette yeesss, Eluveitie is so good!
@mschuette @RiotDemon I gave it a shot, but not really my jam. Better than most in that same genre that I have come across. I do really like the instrumentation though!
Here’s my favorite hurdy gurdy piece right now:
It’s by my favorite hurdy gurdyer (hurdy gurdyist? hurdy gurdist??)
@luvche21 @mike808 in the compressor head video… I honestly don’t think their fingers are moving. The lead guitarist looks like they had a ton of cables going to the frets…
Need more info.
@luvche21 @mike808
@luvche21 @mike808 found a better video. The lead guitarist, you can’t really see much moving in terms of fingers on the frets. The whole mess of cables moves up and down though.
You can see the bassist moving it’s fingers though.
@luvche21 @mike808 @RiotDemon Yeah, I think you’ll see that each “finger” actually has four or six pistons to press strings. I’d wager there are 24 individual pneumatic hoses going to the guitarist’s fretting hand.
Yeah, plus there’s that other module sliding up and down the neck between the two hands.
I’m pretty sure each string also has its own pick, mounted on the picking hand.
Cut with frickin’ lasers!
@PocketBrain While I don’t like how laser cut kits make the edges brown, I do like how it makes (or can make anyway) kits cheaper and the cuts are precision cut so everything should fit well. I used to make 144 scale miniatures and some of those kits - including furniture so those were really tiny - were laser cut and those looked far more delicate than that from kits that were hand cut or making it yourself hand cut.
I have the marble city ones and they are a lot of fun.
Holy crap… I hope you didn’t buy anything from that Puralty website yet.
They’re selling UGears products, without mentioning anywhere that they are UGears products, for WAY more than UGears sells them.
I’ve never seen such a blatant ripoff.
e.g.:
UGears horse @ Puralty - $179 “on sale” for $79.90
UGears horse @ UGears - $49.90 regular price
Even with $15 shipping it’s still $15 cheaper than Puralty before shipping.
Yikes.
edit: Oh… Puralty ships for free… how generous of them.
@DennisG2014 That horse is pretty amazing.
@sammydog01 All of those models are really cool, but I’m still amazed at the temerity of Puralty’s “regular” and “sale” prices.
Shocking enough for me to use the word “temerity” for the first time ever!
@DennisG2014 I haven’t bought anything - I just thought these were really cool which is why I posted since I knew there were some folks on here who liked this kind of stuff. On my wish list - and now know where they are much, much cheaper, but won’t be buying any time soon unless the sky rains money (grin).
@DennisG2014 Amazon seems to be on top of things, look what a search for “Puralty” yields.

Yes, it is.
$50 vs. $80

They’re not very good at it either. Some photos have UGears logo photoshopped out, but others don’t.
They’re also gouging for Rokr models too.
I would like a kit for a shopping-cart-sized working model of a Strandbeest.
@macromeh These things are so amazing. That they are wind operated (at least the ones I have seen in other vidoes) is also so ingenious. I do wonder though how he manages to transport them to the beach.
@macromeh too bad it’s not shopping cart size, but you can buy a small one here.

@RiotDemon Yeah, I want something I can put on a leash and take for a walk on a windy day.
@macromeh Knockoff? It’s only $8.

@blaineg @macromeh The knockoff is mine! Thanks!
