I brought these bowls back with me on my last deployment. I haggled and got a good price at the bazaar. I would be sad if they get lost/broken because they can’t be replaced:
I’ll be devastated when I lose my mom. Unfortunately, this picture is a few years old and that’s my step-father who I’ll likely lose sometime soon as he’s in the end stage of Parkinson’s disease. That band around his forehead is something my mom developed to help with drooping head syndrome.
This one’s a twofer… Something I was sad that I lost and something that I will be sad if I lose. Leatherman doesn’t make the Squirt E4 anymore, and I use it just about every day.
@narfcake Your handwriting is looking much better here. You just need to work on the angle of the legs on the R and K so they don’t look like they’re kicking the letters on front of them.
@jksquared You know, you can always buy the land next to you and do whatever you want with it instead of what the developers want to do with their land. That’s why we call it “ownership”.
@jksquared@mike808 That’s how my parents ended up with their guest house. The house next-door went up for sale and since it had huge lot in a popular neighborhood it was going to become at least three houses. I think my parents acted fast enough that we didn’t even get to the bidding war stage. It was an estate sale, and we allowed her children to leave whatever they didn’t want in exchange for them leaving the major furniture items. Could have made some fascinating fuko/mehrican exchange boxes out of the stuff left behind…alas (thankfully?) my parents eventually cleared out everything they didn’t want.
@therealjrn When I saw the hunt for today, I knew you would use this pic! It made so much sense.
Keep it safe, from a certain cat and those sweet grands!
@therealjrn I did not know about the break-in. So sorry about that. That is sad, I hate lying and thieving!
Yes, memories are the most important thing, can’t lose those!
@Calabama Yeah, I probably didn’t mention it because it was such a downer at the time. But their house was chock full of good memories and lots of nick-knacks to remember things by. The jewelry would have been nice but I’m pretty sure Karma will catch up with the jerk that broke in.
@mikibell thank you Miki! And yes it’s getting to be that time of the year… and I have big feet so I like to always have some paint on them or else they look like dude feet, imo.
@moonhat hmmm imo, they are too pretty to be dude feet…but I don’t normally check out people’s feet!! I hate painting my toenails…the distance to accurately judge where the nail is too far for my reading prescription and too near for my distance prescription! I end up taking my glasses off ans squinting… I know tmi… Sigh
I would be so sad if I lost these pieces of jewelry.
They are tied to both of my parents, who reside in Heaven now.
My dad gave my mom the pearl necklace from Japan, for giving birth to his first child, her third, me.
She bought her own diamond ring and daddy gave her the cluster ring for an anniversary.
These are the only rings I wear.
They took this picture for their church directory.
He has a devilish look because at that time he was pinching her butt! His fav thing to do!
Would’ve been easy to go sentimental here, but I’m more in the mood to go fun. A rather obscure slide rule, one of the more interesting pieces in my wee collection. And, it’s small enough (palm of my small hand, approximately) that losing it is a very real possibility!
@mike808 I’m prejudiced toward Faber-Castell models, myself, but I love seeing and discussing any of them — if you can score a pic of yours, it’d be awesome! I might post a bit more about the above model later, who knows.
@brhfl Thought it was a K+E, but when I dug it out of the basement, it’s a Post Versalog. It looks like this one. I have the manual too. It’s bamboo.
I also have a ThinkGeek model 1337.
No upvotes for this, this is just for fun. In the middle is a bare-bones slide rule, attempting to multiply 5*3… which falls off the right side of the rule.
While this can be performed backward, another solution was to introduce folded scales, CF/DF and the like, which would have the same log scales, only… offset. So calculations like 5*3 were possible. On the bottom, we see our cursor hitting 1.5 (*10=15).
Circular rules need no folded scales! We just do the basic calculation, and we see 3 lines up with 1.5 (*10=15). It’s hard to see because I obscured it with text, but believe me… it’s much simpler!
@brhfl@mike808 I have a K+E, also given to me by my (now departed ) Dad when I got my Master’s degree. Must be a dad thing.
(Also, not for the competition, just for fun)
@brhfl@mehcuda67 Yeah, mine looks nothing like the K+E. Plus, the oval Post logo kinda gives it away. The cursor is cracked on the back, so it has seen better days. I remember being faster than classmates in Chem class running reaction calclations.
Stuff like X ml of Y mol concentration of gold in solution and electroplating a nickel at V voltage for T seconds will deposit N atoms of gold and calcluating the surface area of the nickel, how many atoms thick is the layer of gold deposited, and how much is the gold plating worth if spot gold is G $/troy ounce?
Sucked when we figured out less than a nickel’s worth was plated, and then find out we plated 5x what commercial gold plating would actually plate on a nickel.
I would be sad if I lost this tiny green ceramic frog I got from my late aunt. The piece of paper that came with it said the word for frog in Japanese is the same as return (I have no idea of that’s true), so if you carry it in your purse your money will return to you. Hence, I have a lot of change.
@heartny Holy shit, my ex brought me back a near-identical frog after a year abroad in Japan. For a long time it was very, very important to me, but as I try to move past that part of my life… I’m less sure. Still, it was one of the first things that occurred to me for this phase of the hunt, so perhaps that’s something.
I couldn’t decide between @RiotDemon because i love scruffy animals and cats and @mehcuda67 because I liked the concept. Random thing picker has spoken, congrats @mehcuda67!

Blue stone: Lapis-Lazuli, Green stone: Jade

My pupper Emma is a sweet face to come home to, and she’s also a clever girl.
@PhysAssist adorable lady there!
@moonhat Thanks!
There is a number of things I would be upset to lose, but most of those could be replaced. However, this is Turtle Butt and he is irreplaceable.

@metaphore Such a sad face on Turtle Butt. I feel for him, why is he so sad?

/giphy sad turtle
@metaphore @moonhat I think there’s something else going on. Does he live in Colorado?
@cinoclav @moonhat He’s not sad(or high) he’s just bored cuz he’s hangs out alone in bed all day.
Not the shirt itself, but I’ll miss the site this shirt is advertising if it went away …
@narfcake Your handwriting is looking much better here. You just need to work on the angle of the legs on the R and K so they don’t look like they’re kicking the letters on front of them.
@heartny

We bought our house because it is mostly surrounded by woods. Developers are trying to buy the land next to me… that would make me sad.

@jksquared @seeds. Thanks for yesterday’s topic. I shamed myself into starting my yardwork!

@jksquared This was my plan all along.
@jksquared You know, you can always buy the land next to you and do whatever you want with it instead of what the developers want to do with their land. That’s why we call it “ownership”.
@mike808 We’ve actually started looking into that process.
@jksquared @mike808 At the very least, you can make it more expensive for the developers if you get them into a bidding war.
@jksquared @mike808 That’s how my parents ended up with their guest house. The house next-door went up for sale and since it had huge lot in a popular neighborhood it was going to become at least three houses. I would be very sad to lose this little owl my dearly departed Mother gave me.
@therealjrn When I saw the hunt for today, I knew you would use this pic! It made so much sense.
Keep it safe, from a certain cat and those sweet grands!
@Calabama Because of the break-in, we didn’t get a chance to sort through Mom’s jewelry but I’m not complaining. Plenty, plenty of great memories!
@therealjrn I did not know about the break-in. So sorry about that. That is sad, I hate lying and thieving!

A limb
@moonhat

@cinoclav oh wow, that’s almost creepy. Is it wood?
@moonhat I ‘wood’ assume so. Found via Google. Nothing worse than losing a tree limb!
@cinoclav If I saw that, I’d have to touch it.
@cinoclav @Seeds Like Ralphie touching the leg lamp in A Christmas Story?
@cinoclav @moonhat hopefully this one is less fragile.
@moonhat such a pretty ring! And darn it, I need to paint my toenails!!
@mikibell thank you Miki! And yes it’s getting to be that time of the year… and I have big feet so I like to always have some paint on them or else they look like dude feet, imo.

@Calabama that’s too funny (the butt pinching)! I love it.
Oooh, good question!
I was thinking family members (especially little ones), health, sentimental stuff… Decided to go metaphysical.
My way.
Would’ve been easy to go sentimental here, but I’m more in the mood to go fun. A rather obscure slide rule, one of the more interesting pieces in my wee collection. And, it’s small enough (palm of my small hand, approximately) that losing it is a very real possibility!
@brhfl Nice. Like yours as much as my K+E with leather holster my dad (a PE EE) gave me when I went off to college.
@mike808 I’m prejudiced toward Faber-Castell models, myself, but I love seeing and discussing any of them — if you can score a pic of yours, it’d be awesome! I might post a bit more about the above model later, who knows.

These guys are so awesome, it’ll be very sad days indeed when I lose them.
Again sorry, the pic will be sideways (I really have no clue how to fix it)
Edit: it came out right side up! Sweet

I almost lost my old man a few years ago. He won’t be around forever and it breaks my heart.
@RiotDemon scruffy cat!
@Seeds yeah, he looks scruffy cuz he’s a thin man now. At one point in his life he was crazy obese.
@RiotDemon @Seeds does he have one of those scratchy old man kitty meows?
@moonhat nope! He sounds like a kitten. His meow is tiny. My other cat always drowns him out during food time.
I will be sad if I lose more of this stuff…

Even though for all the hair I lose, I gain forehead…
@curtise 5-head [I know, cuz I’ve got one too].
Closed.
Congrats @cinoclav on most votes.
