The last time I went to a worldcon in Washington state, the forest fires made the air so thick you almost had to bite it off and chew it before you could inhale. And on the way home, I got hit with a kidney stone. This does not make me overwhelmingly enthusiastic about another one.
The only worldcon I attended was San Antonio 1997. I remember it because princess Diana died the same weekend.
The other thing memorable was that the production company from the movie Starship Troopers had sent a prop “bug” to put on display. I didn’t know what it was until months after when the movie came out because no one had bothered to put signage on it.
My first WorldCon was NoreasCon Two in Boston in 1980. I went to most of them that were in North America until children. We started going consistently again after retirement.
I’ve never gone to ones outside of California and Arizona. 2026 is LACON again. WooT.
Small child did not stop us from going, but I always say I lost fandom in the divorce. It was something I was not comfortable doing for quite awhile.
I miss some of the … I don’t know the right word … I went to ConJose a few years ago, worked reg, which I usually do and the entitlement of the younger authors was offputting to me. I was chatting with Robert Silverberg right before the hugos and well let’s just say how some of them behaved was not polite at all.
I rarely go without volunteering because I think it is a good way to do things. I have done many things through the years but now, I’m old, LOL, and can’t do some of that stuff anymore.
@Cerridwyn I have been a dealer at a number of Worldcons, starting with MagiCon in Orlando in '92. My last was MidAmeriCon in KC. At Sasquan, I discovered that my older brother was there and on the staff, which I’d had zero clue about. He’s been doing the volunteering at a level I’ve never contemplated, but he’s also able to afford it.
@werehatrack I have been committee, kinda. My ex was the name on it, but we were a team. I have been a team leader as well.
Never been a dealer.
I have worked:
basic general gopher
Security (one of Nimoy’s guards actually, lol)
Art show, mostly the auction
Registration, mostly on site, but pre-reg back in the day when we used punch cards, LOL
Gopher goddess
Staff coordinator (we did all the pre-con volunters organization and assigned on scene ones to team and in non-specialty areas, shifts
Information booth
First con my daughter ‘worked’ at she was … maybe 3 or 4? it was a booth selling raffle tickets and she knew basics of making change. we were at the next booth over doing something so she wasn’t away from us, but do you have any idea how many people will buy a raffle ticket just because it is a toe-headed toddler selling it without an adult sitting next to her?
A towhead is someone who has very light blond hair. It’s most common to describe blond children as towheads. A true towhead has hair so light that it’s nearly white, which is why most towheads are kid
never been to any con… looking at the website, i don’t know who any of the guests of honor are…
i guess…count me out?
plus, like i have money to fly to Seattle and stay at a hotel for however many days…
@earlyre yeah I don’t know most of the authors anymore. But I really enjoy the other things that go on around me. If you’ve never been to wanted to intrigues you there’s probably one somewhere closer to you that’s smaller it might be a better place to start I don’t know the vicinity of where you live to make any recommendations and in some cases others here might know better than I
I might. Maybe. Probably not.

@Cerridwyn @Kyeh @werehatrack

@mediocrebot Wasn’t sure what to expect, but it wasn’t a toe-fingered offering. Otherwise, cute kid.
Eat your heart out, E.T.
@mediocrebot @phendrick Euw.
@Cerridwyn @phendrick @werehatrack
