If you have smart home stuff (lights, thermostat, cameras, locks, sensors, automatic kitten wrestlers, etc) you generally have a different standard for each type of automatic doodad, or even multiple standards for the same type stuff. A smart home hub such as smartthings or wink can take all that stuff and roll it into one system, giving you control over your whole Internet of things in one place. Then you can do things like when your car pulls in the driveway the house will open the garage, unlock the door, turn on the lights, and start your waffle maker so that you can walk right in and enjoy a crispy hot breakfast pastry without lifting a finger. The smarthings hub is like the multilingual ringmaster for this circus, speaking lightese to the lights, lockese to the locks, and wafflese to the waffle iron from one box.
@f00l to be fair that cat wasn’t especially smart since it chose to squeeze through between the panels instead of going to the now open gap on the other side.
I have a SmartThings hub and some of the other SmartThings devices, and I quite like them. The hub ties in nicely with the Amazon Echo to add voice control to pretty much anything, like my old Galaga arcade cabinet. The things also work together with a fairly easy setup. I have things set up so I take a guitar off of the wall and it automatically turns on an amplifier and wireless receiver so I can start playing without having to fiddle with anything. I also have my phone tied into the system so it knows when I arrive and leave, turning light on and off accordingly.
@Yoda_Daenerys I have a mixture of devices. Most of my outlets for the amps, cabinet, etc. are the Samsung SmartThings outlets, but I do have one Leviton z-wave dimmer for a pair of lamps. Samsung doesn’t offer anything in the way of light switches, so I am using GE z-wave wall switches for lights and ceiling fans. For now, I am using the SmartThings multipurpose sensors to detect if a guitar is on the wall or not and control which amp turns on and off, but I plan on swapping them out with a cheaper, less powerful open/close sensor so I can repurpose the SmartThings elsewhere. I have a SmartThings motion sensor, but I have not played with it to figure out what I want to do with it yet. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, so it hooked up to the system really easily.
I am not using SmartThings for security…yet. I have only been in my house for a couple of months, so I am still getting things setup, and since the house came with a local dumb security system, setting up my own security system has been a lower priority.
There are other things that I plan on doing with the system when I find time for it. I need to replace my front door, and when I do, I will be adding a z-wave or zigbee lock to it. I plan on adding a garage door control/sensor. I plan on adding an ecobee3 smart thermostat (I already have this one, I just can’t find the stupid PCB on the furnace to connect it to…)

@RiotDemon yea, i’ve been doin’ some reading, but i thought all the smart folks here might have some insight.
@Yoda_Daenerys I actually did that because I had no idea what it was. Looks like the Iris system that’s been out a few years.
I hear they automatically call the fire department as soon as they burst into flames.
it kinda feels like these are a solution looking for a problem

@djslack thanks, that helps, and now i’m thinking about waffleseese for breakfast
@djslack I’ve been looking for an automatic kitten wrestler. Where did you find one? It’s for a friend

@compunaut This one

Or this one https://www.amazon.com/FroliCat-DART-Automatic-Rotating-Laser/dp/B003Q6AG9K/
I’m not sure if either of them support z-wave though.
I don’t want my residence to be too much smarter than me. I promised that role to felines.
@f00l
That promise was made millennium before you existed. Thus, your promise is worthless.
Therefore, you can have a house smarter than yourself.
@PlacidPenguin
In the course of my lifetime, have been reminded of this promise a number of times by felines. They seem to monitor my actions.
There is a slight aura of “or else” contained in their purring. I believe they have a considerable enforcement network.

@jbartus it took the shorter path because it could, and it prolly enjoyed the rubbing sensation along the way
