4K, Decent reviews, Decent price, still Meh since 4K isn't something I'm looking for just yet nor is there much content out there even though it sounds like some is right around the corner.
Early adopters usually pay the price on monitors and TV's, and I wouldn't be surprised if the refurb's that have already been fixed pay the price once again with possible issues. PASS!
@Stallion Well, unlike TV, with monitors you are able to either utilize more space more efficiently (e.g. if you don't scale you simply have 4x the space) or if you do scale (e.g. with dpi setting) you will see things like texts a lot more clearly like a phone screen with high PPI.
its cool and all, but what content is out there for 4k? I'm guessing a year or two from now you will be able to get a better monitor for less money when there actually is content for it
@Headly in 4k? Show me games tv shows and movies that come from major studios in 4k resolution I mean it will be great for photo editing or whatnot but at this point 4k is mostly a gimmick
@kperkins1982 A bunch of games run in 4K -- it's just a matter of you having the right hardware (which right now is probably a minimum of GTX970s in SLI.)
@kperkins1982 Why does everyone have to point to the lowest-end stuff possible for monitors, stuff TVs excel at? From a productivity standpoint, for people who employ computers to make coin, 1440p is good, 4K is great @ 28" and above. It's a waste of money to use this for crappy torrented 720p screencaps, you're right. It's the million other uses for a monitor in which it shines!
@kperkins1982 have you seen 4k? It's incredible. PC games will benefit the most, but it's still pretty new. Graphics cards that can handle 4k at 60fps are still expensive.
@Kevin The extra desktop real estate is worth it. This is 1/10 the price of Apple's original 30" display 10 or so years ago and it was only 2650 x 1600
@editorkid one day I may go with the iMac but since I'm already heavily invested in a new maxed out 15" MacBook, short of waiting for the 5K cinema display this is something I can do today and still afford rent and dollar store gifts under the tree this month ;)
@PWiddy I'm with ya. Except for the not being single part. My laptop will handle the DisplayPort, but not at the full 4K resolution. I'm gonna have to make this item 1 of the new build. ;-)
I bought this from Amazon to use with my MacBook Pro. It was so epically meh that I immediately packed it up and sent it back. Either it was defective or it was just so crappy that it may as well have been defective. I'll never know.
Lol, if only the packaging could be as pretty as what I shipped back to Amazon... see, the monitor stand thingy is really tough to remove once you connect it. Let's just say it didn't quite fit in the original packaging and for safety sake I wrapped it in many layers of duct tape and scrap cardboard. Wish I could have seen the reaction when it hit the returns department.
@pevans First review at Amazon states "Do not buy a 4k monitor for your Macbook Pro until Apple releases 10.9.3 this fall. OS 10.9.2 (current version) does not scale well in 4k and looks absolutely terrible." Perhaps that was it?
@vituminx Yes, "does not scale well... looks absolutely terrible" is accurate. Can't recall the OS rev at the time but I did wait for the release that allowed fiddling with the scaling settings. It was bad. Mostly I would blame OS X for scaling poorly, but the monitor is also pretty bad for viewing angles and overall "pleasantness to look at". The many warnings about TN panels should be heeded in this case.
Why expensive items @lisaviolet has made this greedy streak meh wheres the last year gaming laptops at mehdiocre prices is exactly what I've been waiting for..... unknowingly awesome turn of mehvents
If you're getting 4K, what's the point of only a 28" TV. You won't notice the difference between that and 720p unless you are two inches from the screen. Not to mention that buying 4K today is like buying HD in 2001; the technology isn't mature enough.
@Yakuman is a monitor, not a tv. Gamers will notice. In fact, some games support 4k as long as your video card can handle it. Mine can and I am really tempted by this deal
@Yakuman I've heard that arguement a lot. People said the same thing a decade ago: "You'll need a 80" TV to even see 1080p." Wasn't true then, isn't true now.
Dear Meh, I mean Santa… I don't suppose you can send one of these (or something similar) to me for Christmas or in the next Fuku? Pretty please? I have finally landed one adjunct online 8 week course job. I don't look forward to teaching it and grading papers on an 11" laptop screen. I have been very good this year. Honest. OK OK so you need to overlook the fact that I make occasional snarky comments on meh forums and have successfully avoided being the goat two times now. But I have been helpful there too. Honest. By the way my friend's house does not have a chimney but slowpost, oops I mean smartpost, has finally figured out how to find this place so no worries if it doesn't come by reindeer. Thank you.
I bought a 1080p screen before the industry really figured out how the cabling should work; not going to make the same early adopter mistake for 4k/UHD.
I just set up dual 24-inch 4k monitors on a Win7 workstation at work. Yes, everything is tiny. But you can fit so much stuff that you start to misplace things. Enabling scaling in Windows sometime produces predictable artifacts, text not fitting in dialogs, context menus popping up in weird places, etc. Might be better on Win8, i'll let you know in ten years when we switch. 30hz doesn't seem to be a problem for non-gaming.
Tempting but that dastardly Singing Cowboy is on the same page and you know how I feel about "cowboys"...
Seriously though, the monitor is actually pretty decent and quite the "sexy" item IMHO. If I needed a monitor at the moment I would make the purchase. It's nice to see something other than speaker docks and overpriced hipster robo vacuums at least...
My Toshiba 32" HDTV has eight rows of dead pixels and I don't care. I'm only mentioning this to piss off HDMI version snobs and refresh rate snobs. It's just TV.
@lisaviolet I'm glad that has subtitles since I don't have sound at work. Instead of listening somewhere else, I can laboriously translate each caption. Thanks! (Also, Eddie Gorodetsky was a college classmate and one of the people we all knew would make it big.)
(Just kidding, I run Linux and my friends know it. My machines are all hand me downs that are too old to support 4k. Unless you really know Windows, Windows systems decay over time. Once the warranty is gone, and/or the Windows partition is trashed, or the machine is too slow, then it's time to get a new machine. As the Linux user, people tend to offer me their old computers.)
I probably won't get a 4k capable system for another year or two, unless an employer pays for it.
@bashseo depending on where you are, it can. From our FAQ: Q: How much is shipping? How will it be shipped? Can I pay to expedite it? A: Shipping’s always $5, and free for VMP members (see below). So yeah, we’re going to ship it the slowest and cheapest way we can possibly find. Usually that’s Smartpost or Surepost, which starts with FedEx or UPS and ends with the post office. It’ll probably be 2 weeks before you get it. And no you can’t get it any faster.
Q: Ok, fine, it's slow. But when will it be shipped? And how can I track it? A: We wait until the day after the event ends to print the shipping labels, and sometimes if it's busy it can be two or three days (not counting weekends, because we don't ship on weekends). Once it ships, we'll throw a tracking number on your orders page at https://meh.com/orders
@JonT Sure, it might take a while for the shipment to actually arrive, but is it usual for the order to not have even been assigned a tracking number after 6 days?
This worries me, I live in Berkely and the street I live on has been a major route for the protests. I really dont like the idea of my package spending time outside when I have no idea when to look for it
Meh here with an update. These orders are in the process of being shipped from a secondary warehouse which is a bit overloaded with orders at the moment. We are expecting all units to be shipped by end of day and to have tracking loaded to the site by end of day tomorrow but that could push in to early Friday.
Thanks for being patient with us through the Holiday season!
@amitchejr negative. I did get an email saying that we may get it before we get a tracking number. I am pretty sure the majority of meh's warehouse space is in the NJ/NYC area, so if you are on the left coast it may take a few more days.
Is there any update on the tracking? The post above said you guys would have it loaded by early Friday at the latest, but my order still just says 'Placed'
Mine came today. DOA. Can't say I was shocked either, given how terribly it was packaged. Was not double boxed even with a no-ads refurb box and the foam was not sized correctly for the shipping carton. The panel was audibly slipping around in the carton. Not to mention the stand and accessories wedged into the box between the screen and the foam. Only thing worse than the packaging is my photo
@JonT I'm missing cables, and contacted support the day I got the monitor. The support group is unresponsive, and you don't even get a automatic confirmation that your issue was received. I sent another message this morning, just in case I screwed it up. But this cofirms it's meh not me.
@Fark1337 our customer support hours are M-F 8:30am-5:30pm and we are a little behind on requests right now, we'll respond as soon as we can and get things worked out with you.
@amitchejr The ad very clearly states "What's in the Box? 1x Display Port cable" So if you are saying it was never going to include one, then I'm going to go from disgruntled to down right pissed off.
@amitchejr My screen DID come with a display port cable. Mine showed up with the Stand, DP cable, HDMI cable, powerbrick and (equally bricked) panel. Checking the Ad for what's included in the box, however, I did not get the User Guide or the Drivers CD. Sounds like Meh's taking the rough end of a shady reburb provider.
@JonT I realize you guys don't do support on the weekends, and that the root problem is the shady refurb provider & shipper here, but I mailed back twice on Friday during business hours. This could have been in the mail for returns on Friday or Saturday and been that much closer to fixing the situation. Now, nothing will be in the mail until Tuesday, even if you get back to Monday. Not cool.
@skiiver Hey, as @JonT mentioned, we're a little backed up right now with CS. We're a startup with a small crew, and we want to solve each problem on an individual basis. That takes time. I'd apologize for it, but it's the right thing for us and we think it's the right thing for you guys.
@hart doesn't appear it's the right thing for anyone who otherwise would have been getting this monitor as a gift. Because I still haven't heard or seen anything about replacement or refund despite mailling it back to you a week ago. This really puts the Meh- in Mehrry Christmas
@skiiver Hey there, just double checked on this for you. Sorry for the extra long wait. We're really backed up on returns and replacements right now, we have a very tiny CS team and they handle all of our replacements as well every other support request we get. They're trying to go through everything today and we'll have that replacement out to you as soon as possible. Sorry again for the trouble and thanks for being patient.
@visualseed Tuesmeh arrival. Everything in box including 2 display port cables and an HDMI. No, I'm not sending the extra one back. Monitor looks great. No dead pixels that I can tell. Everything was clean and looks as good as new.
@jjcd51590 It was a brown official samsung box. looked like it was right from the factory. Thin but well protected. The base still had plastic on it and the screen was protected by that white thin foam slip cover everyone uses now. Not a spec of dust on the screen. The cables were all still tied with Samsung branded bread ties with plastic end caps. I suspect this was never used and possibly a unit that didn't pass factory tests and was sent back though to cook a little more. Been using it for 3 hours now and love it.
@jjcd51590 I was sweating bullets after seeing some of the earlier posts. I think those were the exception and not the rule. My first purchase on Meh and now it certainly won't be my last.
@visualseed Yeah this is my first purchase too and I would be heart broken if there are dead pixels and there aren't enough to warrant a return lol well ill know in a couple hours I guess
Got it, plugged it in, connected my mac retina via dp, AND... nothing except a well backlit screen. Aside from powering on, the Jog control on the monitor (the only control on the thing), is non-functional, (won't bring up the menu or even turn the thing off). So although my mac says "I got this other monitor thingie attached to me", no dice.

@mediocrebot nice!
The un-removable, completely un-adjustable, non-vesa compatible stand killed this deal.
@ronoc At least you looked before purchasing. I know someone who found out the hard way.
4K, Decent reviews, Decent price, still Meh since 4K isn't something I'm looking for just yet nor is there much content out there even though it sounds like some is right around the corner.

@Stallion Sometimes refurbished goods benefit from the refurbisher upgrading the components that most commonly fail.
@daytonatrbo That's the way I do it. I have repaired a couple of dead monitors, using high-quality components:
I'm so glad companies that sold us our awesome HDTVs have stepped forward to save us from our shitty HDTVs.
its cool and all, but what content is out there for 4k? I'm guessing a year or two from now you will be able to get a better monitor for less money when there actually is content for it

@kperkins1982 Screen space is not a gimmick.

@visualseed @Chrisadactyl Maybe you two have special uses, but for most people, not really. And let's face it, if you're going to go extreme, you should probably go all the way: https://meh.com/forum/topics/imac-retina-in-native-resolution#544bbdacc382807001991fd9
@editorkid one day I may go with the iMac but since I'm already heavily invested in a new maxed out 15" MacBook, short of waiting for the 5K cinema display this is something I can do today and still afford rent and dollar store gifts under the tree this month ;)
@visualseed Ah, but did you take a look at snapster's rig in the particular linked post?
@kperkins1982 Good news- here's a free 4k movie: https://durian.blender.org/news/sintel-4k-dcp/ and Youtube should have some videos available in 4k.
@editorkid I saw. But for me I would settle for nothing less than a full size IMAX set up to get immersed in the movie.
I just started seeing all of these 4K reviews and BAM!, Here's a refurb. 4meh for now
Too bad I just bought a 4k TV on BF. Well, too bad for this deal...still excited about getting my new TV!
Meh face pong is fun!
I can't run this thing off of Thunderbolt 1 at 60hz, can I?
Ahh. I want this so bad but would need a completely new PC build to fully enjoy. This is a single mans monitor.
@PWiddy I'm with ya. Except for the not being single part. My laptop will handle the DisplayPort, but not at the full 4K resolution. I'm gonna have to make this item 1 of the new build. ;-)
Seriously, if I needed a monitor right now... Not bad.

Meh.
@pevans Just think... if you buy one here today, you might get your very exact same one back.
@vituminx Here's a link to my own review on Amazon, which has been deemed by the masses to be less than helpful! :D. http://www.amazon.com/review/R1VHLOE5G55HKV/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00IEZGWI2

@ruouttaurmind Yeah, that's me, killing people's dreams one at a time. I'm really sorry, I have no excuses.
@lisaviolet You shouldn't be apologizing until you get your goat icon. This is clearly the fault of @cengland0!!
@SSteve Thanks! Hey, @unixrab - what SSteve said.
@SSteve @lisavuolet but she can still accept the blame a little early. We can also still flood @unixrab mailbox, you know, just because we can.
@cengland0 +1 on the flooding @unixrab 's mailbox. I'm sure it will be appreciated.
@cengland0 @ssteve @lisaviolet @jont @snapster WHAT THE HELL KINDA CRAP SHIP IS THIS WHERE A GOAT AINT A GOAT
@unixrab Speaking of Lisa, my pillows from 7 days ago still hasn't shipped. Maybe time for a we should start seeing other people thread again?
@Outofmymind THOSE AREN'T PILLOWS!
@unixrab, @listviolet is still in goat training. She is expected to graduate soon.
@unixrab Whydya hafta bring daddy into this?
@Outofmymind I'm just the goat in training, you'll have to ask @cengland0 .
@DaveInSoCal

Black Friday and Cyber Monday was Meh across the country but one thing they did have everywhere was tvs and monitors. Which makes this very Mehdicore.
If I had a 4K monitor.
If I had a 4K monitor.
Well, I'd buy you a mouse.
I would buy you a mouse.
And if I had a 4K monitor.
If I had a 4K monitor.
I'd buy you a mousepad for your mouse.
@nadroj But not a real mousepad; that's cruel.
I guess the viewing angle matters for this one. I don't actually believe in nothing else than IPS. Sorry, meh.
Hertz So Good!
@PSUClaus1 Actually in the description they link to this video:
Electricians do it till it...
Ooooh, what a great price for a refurb...MEH!!!
I guess this is Expensive Shit Week.
If someone wants to be nice and get one or even two of these for me for Christmas, my workstation would thank you.
Yesterday's Meh was cheap meh. This Meh is uncheap meh. Maybe we could have some fun tomorrow?

I want, very much, but too poor. Meh.
I would like a 4K or 5K monitor about this size, and this one being 60Hz is tempting, but I'm not buying a monitor that has a TN panel.

meh
HDMI 1.4 is a deal breaker, a pro-meh, if you will.
Is that Ad Copy for the 4K Monitor a Johnny Cash Song???
@tasu99 Wrong John
Meh no VESA mountable
@kurktchiev I totally read that in a Jar Jar voice the first time "mesa no vesa mountable"
If I wasn't blowing all my money on Christmas shopping...and a new house.....
Not the much higher quality IPS display, only TN, so Meh.
I won't upgrade my current monitor until I can get a gsync enabled one for a reasonable price.
My laptop can't do 4K at 60hz :(
That's one sexy monitor though.
Good price for what it is. If only I had this little thing called money....

@editorkid I'm glad to be of help. And what fun to see someone's name in the credits and say "I knew him when".
@lisaviolet I do have the feeling he never says that about me.
@editorkid Isn't that always the case?
This looked like an awesome deal until I saw that it's a TN display.
What? Limit 3!!! I want a quad monitor setup.
(Just kidding, I run Linux and my friends know it. My machines are all hand me downs that are too old to support 4k. Unless you really know Windows, Windows systems decay over time. No Georgia Red. . . for that alone, meh.
I love purple.
I need one of these ASAP. Does anyone know where I can get one at a price like this?
Does it usually take this long to have items shipped?
@bashseo depending on where you are, it can.
From our FAQ:

@JonT Sure, it might take a while for the shipment to actually arrive, but is it usual for the order to not have even been assigned a tracking number after 6 days?
@bashseo Maybe they are waiting for more to break and get refurbed. haha.. I want my monitor :(
@davidhahl I'm anxious too, but they do say they don't ship on weekends, so this would be 4 days
Yeah I'm a little surprised at the delay, given they say "sometimes it can be 2-3 days." But, it's only been 4..so..I'll try to be patient.
Mine was delivered today even though I don't even have a tracking number yet. The pixels!!
This worries me, I live in Berkely and the street I live on has been a major route for the protests. I really dont like the idea of my package spending time outside when I have no idea when to look for it
@amitchejr Sounds like a great excuse to call in sick.
@noel iiiinteresting. I'll be hopeful, then - mine doesn't say shipped yet.
@noel given the recent update how would you have even received yours by now?
@amitchejr not entirely sure, though I was one of the first few to buy, so I might have been on an early shipment.
@noel Here's hoping i made it within the same shipment!
Hey everyone.
@MEHcus Thanks for the update! Some have claimed to have already received their screen, is this possible?
@amitchejr Yes it is. Some have already shipped out and the rest will be finished up shortly.
@MEHcus Thank you for the update! I appreciate the communication.
@MEHcus Thank you! Fingers crossed!
Thanks for the update :)
Yay! Pixels be coming!
cannot wait, small screen is hurting my eyes
Mine came this afternoon. No tracking number, no confirmation.
By the time mine gets here, 8k will be industry standard... Whats the deal here folks?
What video cards are you peeps running with this new monitor? I'm looking at picking up a new one just for this 4k. DisplayPort 1.3 right?
@instantchow 660 ti w/ display port. beautiful.
@abear cool, nice card. prob overkill for me, i just do photoshop and illustrator =)
got mine today. absolutely beautiful. thanks, meh!
@abear have you received any updates on your orders page or a tracking number yet?
@amitchejr negative. I did get an email saying that we may get it before we get a tracking number. I am pretty sure the majority of meh's warehouse space is in the NJ/NYC area, so if you are on the left coast it may take a few more days.
Is there any update on the tracking? The post above said you guys would have it loaded by early Friday at the latest, but my order still just says 'Placed'
Mine came in today. It said "Placed" yesterday - status says "Shipped" now.
My status was just updated: Pickup info sent to Fedex. expected delivery 12/18
@skiiver aaaaand there goes the peace of mind the tracking info brought me. I feel for you, i hope you can get this sorted!
@amitchejr it is not refurbished. Just the status when it was returned.
@skiiver :( That sucks, sorry. Contact us at https://meh.com/support
@JonT I did; about the same time I posted here. Haven't heard back.
@JonT I'm missing cables, and contacted support the day I got the monitor. The support group is unresponsive, and you don't even get a automatic confirmation that your issue was received. I sent another message this morning, just in case I screwed it up. But this cofirms it's meh not me.
@Fark1337 which cables are you missing? The screen does not come with a display port cable
@amitchejr Yes it does (well, it should).
@JonT Another week and no sign of my monitor. No email contact either. My patience has totally worn out. This isn't even acceptable for a start up.
Mine has a blue streak in the middle of the screen. Maybe 80-120 stuck or dead pixels.
Mehbe mehine mehight mehterialize Mehnday.
@visualseed Tuesmeh arrival. Everything in box including 2 display port cables and an HDMI. No, I'm not sending the extra one back. Monitor looks great. No dead pixels that I can tell. Everything was clean and looks as good as new.
@visualseed this is very comforting after all the reports of bad luck. How was the packaging on yours?
@jjcd51590 It was a brown official samsung box. looked like it was right from the factory. Thin but well protected. The base still had plastic on it and the screen was protected by that white thin foam slip cover everyone uses now. Not a spec of dust on the screen. The cables were all still tied with Samsung branded bread ties with plastic end caps. I suspect this was never used and possibly a unit that didn't pass factory tests and was sent back though to cook a little more. Been using it for 3 hours now and love it.
@visualseed hope I am as lucky as you lol
@jjcd51590 I was sweating bullets after seeing some of the earlier posts. I think those were the exception and not the rule. My first purchase on Meh and now it certainly won't be my last.
@visualseed Yeah this is my first purchase too and I would be heart broken if there are dead pixels and there aren't enough to warrant a return lol well ill know in a couple hours I guess
I got mine, seems to be working ok. haven't 4k'ed it yet since my new video card doesn't come in until later.
This is the "meh-est" of Meh purchases ever...
HELP!
@dkrupps sorry about that. Send us a shout at https://meh.com/support
@dkrupps oh hey, mine has a bad displayport plug too. nice to know we're not alone, i guess?
got mine in a samsung box as well... looks beautiful... screen tiny as hell though lol
AMEHZING! A MEHSTERPIECE!
MEHNICING? INTIMEHDATING? MEHBY.
Mine came today and I couldn't be happier. Thank you to the whole Meh crew and my local ninja amphibian delivery team.
@amitchejr mehzmehrizing.
Is this monitor supposed to have a display port? From the comments here, I thought so. Mine has 2 hdmi and a vga.
Also, what is the exact model number? I can't find it anywhere on this site.
Thanks!
@holtat from the top of this thread (looks like it should have Display Port if you got the correct model):
Model: LU28D590DS/ZA
Inputs: HDMI (1.4 x 2), Display port (1.2 x 1)
@Ignorant U28D590D The model number on the back of my screen is U28D590D (no L or S/ZA).
@holtat model U28D590D at newegg.com shows it has 2 HDMI and 1 Display Port.
