Rip 2020 take 2.
14So, as customary I post this thread every year to reflect upon celebrities, mehmbers, people that have had influence in your life in one way or another that have passed in 2020. These threads get quite long, so if we could keep it to a low roar on politician views/bickering. It’s a celebration of the person’s life and a chance at the end of the year to say huh. X y and z died this year. Dang.

So to atone for my unrelated snarky comment, I did hear on the radio that ex-Yankee pitcher Don Larsen died Jan 1. He was notedly the only pitcher to throw a perfect World Series game (game 5, 1956), pitching to one of my other favorite MLB characters, Yogi Berra.

Another great shot:
@ybmuG I don’t even like baseball, but having an achievement like that at a professional level is an amazing thing. He must have had one hell of an arm.
Buck Henry, the Hollywood screenwriter known for “The Graduate” and “What’s Up, Doc?” and who co-created the TV comedy series “Get Smart,” died Wednesday night in Los Angeles after suffering a heart attack, according to reports. He was 89 years old.
Many fans also know Henry for his frequent appearances on “Saturday Night Live” during its early years. For example, Henry was the sandwich-buying customer who appeared in the “Samurai Delicatessen” sketch with the late John Belushi.

Very sad news to announce
Rush drummer Neil Peart dead at 67
Peart died on Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif., after battling brain cancer, family spokesperson Elliot Mintz said in a statement obtained by Fox News.
A statement posted on the band’s official Twitter page said: “It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on Tuesday our friend, soul brother and bandmate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three and a half year battle with brain cancer …”
@tinamarie1974 that really sucks. My dad was gone in 3 months with brain cancer. Fuck cancer.
I’m beyond devastated today. I’ve been a huge Rush fan for 40 years. I’m fortunate enough to have seen them 20+ times. There was never a show where Neil didn’t give it everything he had.
RIP Professor
(Yes, I took this at one of the shows.)
@cinoclav Philly. It is up on Youtube, of couse.
@mike808 I was (of course) at that show. Actually have an album on my Facebook page of photos from it. I first saw them in 1984. Went to at least one show on every tour since then. As I got older and had more expendable income I started going to multiple shows when possible and splurging for VIP tickets to make sure I sat nice and close. I was just starting to get over the loss of knowing they wouldn’t ever tour again and likely would never record together either. Neil’s passing is a painful exclamation point.
@mike808 Did you happen to look at the date on the photo I posted above? It just dawned on me that I took that at the exact same concert you posted the video of.
@tinamarie1974 Did you know he wrote books? I didn’t. Audible has most of them for free right now.

@sammydog01 I knew about at least one if them, but did not know it was bookS. Thanks!
Mike Resnick, a major figure in science fiction, has died after a brief battle with “a very aggressive form of lymphoma” that was diagnosed in November. He was 77.
Resnick had a well-deserved reputation as a mentor and editor, as well as being a prolific writer. As Michael Swanwick notes in his remembrance of Resnick, he was “the man with a thousand little rockets” – a reference to how he would stud each year’s World Science Fiction Convention badge with rows of Hugo Award nominee pins, a tribute to both how much work he produced and how well-received it was by his legion of fans.
Resnick launched a Gofundme campaign in November to help pay for his medical expenses. Today, that campaign is being used by his family to defray his medical debt and to help his widow Carol with her ongoing living costs.
Resnick’s daughter, the writer Laura Resnick, added this in her remembrance of her father: “His connection to his friends, his readers, and his colleagues enriched his life, and he never stopped being delighted to meet people who read his work, who were interested in writing, who loved books and stories, and who shared his sense of wonder. He remained enthusiastic about his craft and devoted to his writing to the end of his life, and was always thrilled to be part of the science fiction community, as both a fan and a pro. He taught me a lot about being a writer and a professional.”
John Scalzi’s obit for Resnick emphasizes Resnick’s pay-it-forward attitude: “what I think you will see most in the tributes that will be coming out about in the next few days is the fact he was a teacher and mentor to a great number of writers in the science fiction community, sharing advice about writing and the writing life over decades.” (Scalzi also remembers Resnick’s part in the publication of a controversial column he co-wrote for the Science Fiction Writers of America’s magazine while Scalzi was President of SFWA).
As I wrote when I contributed to his medical expenses crowdfunder, medical debt is particularly oppressive for self-employed artists, and science fiction circles are perpetually fundraising for some ill or injured writer whose lack of insurance endangers their own ability to work and provide for their families. This is partially why I donated to both the campaigns of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, both of whom advocated Medicare for All. There are untold mountains of brilliant books, paintings, songs and other art that were never produced because the artists who would have made them were either so burdened with medical debt that they couldn’t find the time or mental space to produce them; or because they were so scared of accruing medical debt that they abandoned the idea of a career in the arts.
@Cerridwyn What is the “Convention Badge” that is referenced?
@therealjrn
when you attend a scifi convention (or any that I have attended) you get a name badge of some sort. Most do not use the stick on labels, and for world con, they are often heavy printed plastic. I’m too lazy to take a picture of mine from last year
@Cerridwyn Oh, ok. thanks.
@Cerridwyn @therealjrn Like this one. It even has a Hugo Award pin for bonus points.
Here is the explanation by the owner, Neil Clarke.
http://neil-clarke.com/anatomy-of-a-worldcon-badge/
Yeah, I got it @mike808. I’m not a fucking idiot. @Cerridwyn explained it quite well, you googling asswipe.
This one is personal. My friend, Chef George Beaird, passed away suddenly yesterday after having a stroke closing his restaurant the night before.
He was a no nonsense, foulmouthed redneck with formal training in the culinary arts and a passion for feeding people damn good food. Back in culinary school he created an award winning Jack Daniels based sauce that you have probably tasted if you ate at quick service chains in the 2000s. He finally got to open his own restaurant in 2017, and burst onto the culinary scene in town with significant notice from his new exposure to the local fooderati and built himself a dedicated following.
He occasionally called himself the Vulgar Chef, and Carl669 would approve greatly of many of his sayings. He taught me how to hold a knife and chop an onion correctly. How to make paella and other things I would never have had without dinners at his house. We kicked around making him a YouTube channel where he could share his knowledge with the world, and I couldn’t wait to learn so much more from him by producing it. That got put on hold when he got his chance at his own restaurant. I hooked him up with sous vide stuff and discussed cooking stuff at a level I had no business knowing about, much less discussing with a pro.
I met him more than a decade ago through my ex. He showed me that I wasn’t happy when I didn’t even know that myself and helped me through the experience of learning that the love of my life was not the right one. I got to keep him in the split. I’ll always be grateful for the time we spent, the many hours of stories we shared, and the value of spending time with someone who truly loved what he did and got to live his dream.
So much to say, but it’s not relevant, really. All I have to say is what I said to him at the end of many times we spent together. Thanks, George, for the good food and the good times. We’ll all miss having your meat in our mouths.
@djslack I am so sorry your good friend died so suddenly, and based on the photo you posted well before his time.
@Kidsandliz thank you.
@djslack losing any friend is hard. I hope you are able to remember the good times for years to come.
@djslack I am so sorry. Loosing a close friend is so very difficult. Time will help
@djslack
I am so sorry to hear that you lost your very close friend. Such a loss is always a bit like being hit by a tornado and losing one’s residence.
How does one go on breathing, when it feels like one forgot how to? What happened to the now destroyed emotional space one lived in?
But … you have spoken so beautifully of him that I almost feel he was my friend too.
I’m so glad you have told us in such detail about how he was able to live and express his passion personally and professionally, and how the two of your were able to share that passion.
And more than that: I’m so glad that the two of you were able to give so much to each other. Apart from a person’s notable public achievements and special skills, there is the private sphere we share with our closest and most enduring personal connections.
It’s clear that he gave you so much.
And if he were still here to answer the question, I’m guessing that, if asked, he would have a powerful list to offer of so much that he values, critical to him: insights, experiences, bonds, trust, wisdom; that you gave to him.
I’m so glad that you both had this relationship. Even if he’s gone now, I hope this relationship is still here; as long as you still cherish it, as long as you still live with all that the two of you shared and gained.
Your post of memories about your friend made me both sad and a little happy:
Sad that he died too soon and so unexpectedly
Happy that you two shared so much.

I’ve read around in the 12-volume History of Middle-Earth series (edited by Christopher Tolkien), that uses his father’s extensive notes to trace the development of the thoughts and concepts that became the tales set in that world.
Pretty interesting stuff, esp in showing how a brilliant and well-tuned mind combines some cultural encounters and simple thoughts and grows/transforms those into a universe that breathes on its own (at least in the reader’s imagination).
So thx to C Tolkien for being a superb steward of his father’s literary heritage.

@mossygreen The specific type of dementia is a nightmare; it was “frontotemporal dementia” which means that this brilliant wordsmith had the most important part of his brain damaged. Don’t know how I missed it, as the people I follow on twitter are generally ALL OVER that sort of thing, but I am sad. Never watched 77 Sunset Strip, and still find it really dull, but I always liked Edd Byrnes. Probably mostly for the quietly creepy/sleazy/sexy energy he brings to Vince Fontaine in Grease. Donald Stratton, one of the last USS Arizona survivors from Pearl Harbor who fought for the recognition of one of his heroic shipmates, died Saturday night in his sleep.
Stratton died of natural causes in Colorado Springs, Colo., his family said. He was 97.
The Navy veteran said it wasn’t until 2001, during a reunion of Pearl Harbor survivors, that he discovered the identity of the U.S. service member who saved his life and the lives of at least five other sailors: Chief Petty Officer Joe George, who died in 1996.
Stratton and Lauren Bruner, another Arizona survivor, lobbied hard for George to be recognized. Both traveled to Washington, D.C., in 2017 to meet President Trump in the White House and then-Defense Secretary Jim Mattis at the Pentagon.

If you want to get technical, covid-19 doesn’t kill anyone.
Complications from covid-19 kill people.
You going to quibble about whether someone died of cancer or with cancer because technically it was pneumonia or organ failure that dealt the final blow?
And if a person were confirmed to have died of coronavirus, I’m sure you’re the kind of person who’d say, “yeah, but did they have a preexisting condition?”
If you catch the virus and die, we’ll have to make sure to tell people, “yeah, but it wasn’t the virus that killed him, it was the alternative facts.”

George Perry Floyd Jr.
May 25, 2020
On May 25, 2020, Floyd was arrested for passing a counterfeit $20 bill at a grocery store in Minneapolis.
He was killed after Derek Chauvin, a highly trained and decorated white police officer with 19 years of experience with the Minneapolis Police, pressed his knee to Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds; for the last three of those minutes, Floyd was motionless and had no pulse, and none of the officers present made no attempt to revive him.
Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd’s neck as arriving emergency medical technicians attempted to treat him.
Floyd was handcuffed face down in the street, while two rookie officers in their first week on the job further restrained Floyd at the direction of Chauvin, the senior officer present, and a fourth prevented onlookers from intervening.
His five children, the youngest a 6-year old daughter, will forever know the image below as the last image of their father alive.

@f00l This is an awful movie, and not Morricone’s best music, but man is it haunting…
@curtw4
Morricone is said to have thought that A Fistful Of Dollars was an awful film, yet also entertaining and iconic.
He supposedly said he scored some awful Leone films, and some great ones. With 500 film scores completed, kinda predictable that some of the associated movies are gonna be doozies.
The music seems to have “risen above“ tho.
Supposedly he started writing his scores as soon as he got a semi-coherent script and some idea of intending length: sometimes before they’d started casting.
He also got a look at storyboards early in the process, because he wanted the score to evoke the time and place.
His music for the Leone spaghetti westerns plays in my head when I have been in AZ, NM, and far west Texas.
It evokes such a sense of danger, desolation, possible betrayal, struggle to survive, indifference of the natural world, enormous space and sky, transcendent beauty, timelessness.

@tinamarie1974 It’s been 21-22 years since I went to the St. Louis Zoo. I don’t remember much from it other than the train was closed down for some reason at the time. (I think there had been an accident where it derailed sometime prior to our visit?)
Since then, I’ve been to Henry Doorly Zoo (Omaha), Blank Park Zoo (Des Moines), Lowry Park Zoo (Tampa), Animal Kingdom (Orlando), and Dickerson Park Zoo (Springfield, MO). Then there’s work, which with some of our customers (and some of my coworkers) sometimes seems like a zoo.
@msklzannie well I hope you enjoyed our Zoo regardless! It is one of my favorite destinations in St Louis. It is my #1 go to when I have out of town guests. BTW, I love visiting out of town zoos as well! My closest would be Chicago and farthest was Frankfurt. One day I hope to see San Diego!

There’s a bunch more and it’s pretty interesting.
Ms Buxton grew up bouncing between England and South Africa during the war years. Her family then moved to LA. There she was denied access to club courts, due to anti-semitism; but she eventually got invited to train on Charlie Chaplin’s private courts, where she also had the chance to play with various Hollywood greats like Katharine Hepburn amd Walter Pidgeon.
@f00l What a great story I never heard before! What a life!

GOT can suck it. Emma Peel has departed this world, and with her a unique elegance, grace, piquance, and “OMG she’s awesome!” has also been forever lost.
@duodec @Mehrocco_Mole She also hosted Mystery on PBS. She was awesome.
@duodec @Mehrocco_Mole @sammydog01 sigh
someone I’ve watched all my life, from Mrs. Peel to Macbeth to Muppets, she was awesome …
@duodec @Mehrocco_Mole her character in GOT was great. She played her perfectly.
One of the classist Bond Girls, and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire to boot! Besides her film and television appearances, Diana had a prolific stage career as well. RIP.

R.I.P. Frederick Nathaniel ‘Toots’ Hibbert.
https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/toots-hibbert-maytals-dead-1053716/
One of my all time favorite albums has always been the soundtrack to the film “The Harder They Come”.
Because the CD, when imported into iTunes, listed all the tracks as being by Jimmy Cliff, it took me ~20 years to realize that most of my favorite songs from the album were actually Toots & the Maytals.
Finally saw them live in 2013 and it was awesome.
@DennisG2014
Saw them at the New Orleans Jazz Fest a couple of times, and were on the “must see” list after the first. They burned their joints to the ground, tore the roof off, kissed yo mama, drank yo daddy’s beer, and weren’t sorry for one chorus of their sets.
They did not … refrain. (Sorry. Had to pun.)
Rest In Power, Toots.
RS dud a nice write up of his new album recently.

I’m jealous! That must’ve been so much fun.
I saw Jimmy Cliff play at Jazz Fest in '00, when I still believed one of my favorite reggae tunes, Pressure Drop, was performed by him…
When I finally ‘discovered’ Toots and the Maytals and bought some albums, it was a revelation.
So many great songs and such a beautiful voice.
Not to “toot” my own horn, but when I started discovering the deeper cuts, I remarked to a few people that he was like the Otis Redding of reggae.
Only finding out as I read some tributes today that I was not the first person to have that thought. Might’ve even been one of the last… lol
@DennisG2014
I only had the pleasure of seeing him one time, May 2, 2006 in Allentown, PA. I was right next to the stage dancing my ass off. Toots leaned down a couple of times to give me a fist-bump. He was probably astonished that a 6’ 3” 275lb white guy can easy skank, but his music got everyone in a groove.
Rest easy.

@Cerridwyn @OldCatLady Such a loss. I saw her at the New York State Fair when I was a teen.
Within about half a week, my small town has lost 3 people.
Saturday, my assistant manager’s dad passed away. He was an ornery old coot. He and I would always stick our tongues out at each other whenever we saw one another.
Monday, a ~25-year-old committed suicide (possibly suicide-by-cop). I’m not sure if I knew him as I haven’t seen a picture and I don’t always know people’s names.
Tuesday, one of the town’s bankers was killed in a car vs semi accident. I’ve known his family since I was in kindergarten.
@msklzannie sorry for your losses.
@RiotDemon Thank you. The town needs a break.
@msklzannie
Damn. I hope and trust that you will all pull together for this.
So tough.
@msklzannie That sucks. Small towns tend to rally together; I hope yours does.
@msklzannie so sorry
Update: I had some incorrect information about the young man. It turns out he was only 19 (almost 20) and the name I had been told was wrong. I did recognize him from the picture in the notice but didn’t really know him.

The Scottish actor was best known for his portrayal of James Bond, being the first to bring the role to the big screen and appearing in seven Bond films.
Sir Sean died peacefully in his sleep.
His acting career spanned five decades and he won an Oscar in 1988 for his role in The Untouchables.
Sir Sean’s other films included The Hunt for Red October, Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Rock, and Medicine Man.
Sir Sean Connery

@mike808 He WAS James Bond, the others were all imposters.
@Kyeh @mike808 I was just talking to my mother about him as James Bond. We’ve all grown up with different actors in the role. The first I really knew was Roger Moore so of course he was the quintessential Bond. Until I got older and was able to watch Connery’s Bond and appreciate him all the more.

David Prowse - The man behind the mask of Darth Vader has passed away at 85. As a huge Star Wars fan, this saddens me greatly. While James Earl Jones provided the voice, Darth Vader was so much more than that. Prowse’s unspoken performance truly made Vader the most intimidating villain in the universe. RIP
https://www.starwars.com/news/david-prowse
And Lucas was such a dick he wouldn’t give him a final cameo in ROTJ in Vader’s unmasked death scene. Instead he cast Sebastian Shaw for a few seconds of screen time.
Prowse got started in Casino Royale (1967, the first “Bond” movie) and was in A Clockwork Orange.
He was auditioned for both Chewbacca and Vader, and chose Vader because “everybody remembers the villain”.
Correction: Shaw had 2m 7s of screen time with just 24 words of dialogue in ROTJ.
@mike808 He didn’t actually audition for Chewbacca. Lucas gave him the choice of auditioning for either role and he chose Vader as you said. Also, Lucas really dicked him by falsely blaming him for leaking what happens to Vader to the press and banning him from official conventions. But the reporter with the story said Prowse wasn’t his source.
Prowse was also known for his sense of humor on set, ad libbing as Vader, and often saying his lines with a mild Scottish accent.
@cinoclav

57 years of science comes to an end.
@blaineg I ran Seti at home for a few years when they had the dedicated clients and allowed you to run them across numerous platforms. They were processing data from Arecibo. We even ran them on our OpenVMS Alphaservers overnights and weekends. It all ended when they switched to a more restrictive client that could be used for other projects but dropped support for many platforms.
Hopefully the site will be rebuilt or replaced…
@blaineg
Reading about the situation there in recent months has been painful I’m so sorry this happened
Was a beautiful thing
@blaineg @duodec I ran SETI@Home (though in truth it was also SETI@Work) on the original client, though only on PC compatibles. I used that utility that would poll your various PCs and send in the results automatically for your account. On one overnighter at work, I ran nine PCs plus at least two at home that I’d remoted into. Would occasionally get into races with other folks on my team.
@blaineg @ThunderChicken There was a period of time where the DEC Alphaservers were by far the fastest servers being used for Seti at home. We didn’t have those high end Alphas at work but the two we did have blew the doors off our desktop PCs and the two PC servers; thats why I ran it on them.
I don’t remember how many units I ended up with before quitting over their client changes.
@duodec @ThunderChicken I ran SETI@Home on a bunch of machines as well.

General Chuck Yeager, World War II fighter ace, test pilot, the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound, passed away Monday at the age of 97.
West Virginia Story
We are diminished.
@mike808 @duodec
From an article recommending certain medical 1st responder habits to adhere to when under stress:
A guy who had been a pilot in the military, and later for a major airline, told me that the “Yeager voice” is copied worldwide, even by pilots whose native language is not English.
@duodec @f00l @mike808 That’s really cool about the voice.
@duodec @f00l @Kyeh @mike808 As a general aviation pilot, I naturally adopted the “Yeager voice,” but never knew where it came from. I thought the low, gravelly tone was the result of the old-timers being subjected to numerous hours of inflight vibration.
@duodec @Kyeh @mike808 @ThunderChicken
My dad flew in the Army Air Corps 1941-1946. Dad was well out of being a pilot as a vocation by the 1950’s when Yeager became well known even in the furthest and most remote corners of the world of aviation.
Dad had, after 1946, moved on to starting a biz and a family. Only rarely did he fly hobbyist planes after he left the military. And Dad, who lived his life in Texas, and who was a hybrid rural/small town boy in the 1920s/1930s growing up, naturally had a voice similar to Yeager’s. Perhaps Dad’s voice had a little more “southwest” on it.
I didn’t know of Yeager until I read The Right Stuff. At the time the book hit, I asked Dad about Yeager. Yeager had become a true pilot hero for Dad, who had to some degree followed Yeager’s career later on.

John Lennon RIP
I was in Manhattan that day. Was out w friends that evening to celebrate a birthday. We were on our way to a bar when we heard. We found as bar w a tv and confirmed the news.
We gave up on a night in the town. We didn’t go to the Dakota; we went to a companion’s apartment and slowly drank and talked (and perhaps some of us cried a little) thru every album. And then we started over.

Colonel Robert E. Thacker, USAF (Ret.), who survived the Pearl Harbor raid and went on to fly in three wars, died November 25 at the age of 102.
(This may not seem timely, but his daughter did not confirm his death until last week to The San Clemente Times.)
Thacker was one of the pilots of a flight of new B-17 bombers that arrived over Hickam Field in Hawaii in the midst of the battle, unaware of the attack until they saw aircraft battling in the sky and smoke in the air. He successfully landed after having his landing gear shot off.
He went on to be one of the few pilots to fly in both theaters of the war. He also flew B-29 bombers during the Korean War and secret high-altitude reconnaissance flights over North Vietnam.
Thacker also served as a test pilot, and in 1947 became the first pilot to fly nonstop from Hawaii to New York City, flying a fully laden P-52 Twin Mustang and setting speed and distance records for piston-engined fighters that have never been beaten.
His other accomplishments included becoming the Southern California yo-yo champion in 1932. He was an accomplished, lifelong aircraft modeler.
