Just read that and was about to tag @RiotDemon and @sammydog01 in another thread.
If they’d a gotten on the Stoopwafel band wagon they would be rolling in dough!
Wut.
Well, I can’t really say I’m surprised. I haven’t seen anything about it on the app, which is annoying.
The few movies that have opened haven’t done great and I don’t doubt that’s why more movies have been pushed back.
My notification this morning:
@RiotDemon I guess I need to go every day this week. The War With Grandpa is still on the schedule.
No Regals in Iowa, but I wonder if the other chains nearby (Cinemark, AMC, CEC, Fridley) will follow suit.
@msklzannie I wouldn’t be surprised. If no new movies are being widely released, they can only fall back on showing old movies. I can’t see it being worth staying open for the few stragglers that are coming in.
@RiotDemon I wouldn’t be surprised on the bigger chains or even CEC as all of them took quite awhile to reopen. But the Fridley theatres opened up as soon as they legally could reopen and have been showing the older movies for $3. I think they did that so they wouldn’t run afoul of the federal loans stuff.
I am sad because our wonderful local chain, Warren Theatres, sold out to Regal in 2017. I am sure that, if he were still in control, as a movie lover Bill Warren would do everything he could to keep them open.
@ThunderChicken I mean, there’s 17 movies playing at the regal today. Looking at them, there’s only a handful of people at each showing, if that. Most of the movies only have between 1 and 3 showtimes. People just aren’t going.
@RiotDemon Yeah. I guess the writing was on the wall. Bill didn’t make his money by being stupid.
I don’t really ever go to movies in the first place cause… just why? But we only have a two screen locally owned place that does $4 matinee and $6 night shows. Usually just the big movies cause they need to get as much profit as they can per screen. Looks like they are only doing weekend shows now… I do hope they survive, it’s a nice, clean, cheap place when you want to go see one on the big screen.
@unksol it’s just not the same watching a movie at home unless you have a dedicated theater room with giant speakers and rear projection.
I do not.
@RiotDemon @unksol …and stale popcorn that smells better than it tastes. (Just cannot duplicate that fake butter taste.)
@RiotDemon I got none of that at home but also usually not people to go with so… Meh. But yeah when you want that big experience it’s nice to have. I only usually bother for “special” movies.
Star wars was at the dollar theater when it was rereleased and dad took us. Must have been early or mid 90s… I think we caught LOTR when we were teens as a group. Dollar theaters I think have died.
@phendrick @RiotDemon we were never buying snacks cause they are rediculous… And you can live for 2 hours. But if your taking a date lol. Let it go. Even if you could have gone to dinner first for the same price.
I have to say I am glad. 2+ hours indoors with others in a poor ventilation room with people likely not wearing masks (hard to know in dark) seems irresponsible throughout the USA until we get a a vaccine and get the vast majority of people vaccinated.
So closing the theaters seems like a public good . We need to decrease transmission particularly as we go into fal and winter when folks will be spending more time inside.
@CaptAmehrican It’s the bars and restaurants that are the problem not the movie theaters.
@sammydog01 those as well. Indoors with people not in your family is an issue
I totally understand what you’re saying, but there’s barely anyone in there. The chance of catching it is very low. @CaptAmehrican
@sammydog01 my brother lives in fort lauderdale. He said as soon as our governor opened up bars and restaurants to 100% capacity, he said downtown was slammed.
Just check out this video (behind a short ad)

@CaptAmehrican @RiotDemon @sammydog01 I mean what do you expect from Florida. Morons were packing beaches when they were closed. Have been on the news for ignoring shutdowns and orders the whole time
I went to see Hocus Pocus. Also cashed in some points for popcorn and soda.
@sammydog01 probably a good plan since there is no guarantee they will be worth anything later if they have to wait until next spring to have any new movies and be able to host a significant number of people at once. Even as deep as their pockets may be that’s some significant overhead in real estate, perishables, etc. while they are closed.
@chienfou Some of the chains sold popcorn to go while they were shut down. The one near me sold bags that were the equivalent of 5 larges for $15.
Dad and I are at the local CEC theater to see Infidel tonight. We’re the only ones at this showing. First time we’ve been to the movies since they reopened.
One other person showed up but sat clear in the back. I liked the movie although there was a bit more strong language than I prefer.
@RiotDemon and @sammydog01 Have you seen Infidel yet?
@msklzannie @sammydog01 not yet! On my list.
