It is much harder to pick a favorite red. Malbec is definitely on my top five list, as are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Zinfandel. Not sure what the last one would be.
@baqui63 The only thing better than a Gewürztraminer is a Traminette. They’re hard to find, but since you seem to like the same things i do, you should go find one.
@smyle Sounds delicious and apparently, Traminette is becoming popular in the Hudson Valley. This might make it easier for me to find since I’m in NY City (basicly a due south of said valley).
I was not aware of its existence; thanks. I will look for it.
@chienfou Interesting. I have had Valpolicella recioto before as a dessert wine, but to my recollection, never a Ripasso. I’ll have to hunt down some and try it. Thanks for the suggestion.
@awk Why does she remind me of a 1950 or 1960 housewife with that hair cut and Pom Pom slipper shoes. Granted, a housewife during that era probably wouldn’t be outside dressed like that, but back then housewives supposedly had to have a clean house and dinner ready for when the husband came home. I’m thinking she didn’t have dinner ready because the book club ran late so she is trying to distract the husband. Thinking if he drank both she could get the dinner finished before he would notice. Crafty little housewife that she is. I’m also thinking she turned on the sprinklers to put out the fire she started in the backyard since it looks like it’s just smoldering now. Crafty indeed. Way to go Mom! (Get that image out of your mind!)

@WTFsunshine It’s from Happy Gilmore. His coach tells him to go to his happy place to help him relax and swing better (IIRC; I think it’s been about 20 years since I saw it).
@WTFsunshine That’s his grandmother winning on the slot machine. Her house is being foreclosed on and he’s trying to save the house by winning money playing golf. He’s not very good but can hit the ball a long way thanks to his hockey technique.
Sadly, through lots of trial and error, I’ve discovered that red whine is the only alcoholic beverage that will consistently give me a hangover. I can drink anything else all day and night with no I’ll effects aside from making an ass of myself, but reds will generally give me near immediate headaches and horrible hangovers. All for the best, though, I guess, because I don’t think I enjoy red wine too much. I’m sure someone could show me something I’d fall in love with eventually, but I’ll settle for a nice buttery chard for now. Or beer. Beer is very primary to me.
None of these choices apply to me. I suppose the closest is to say, “I don’t drink wine,” but that’s not really accurate; I just don’t drink wine often. I’m finally understanding what’s meant by dry, tannic, sweet, etc., but I don’t have any favorites or could even tell you what to expect about one style or another. I usually just ask a waiter for a recommendation or share whatever bottle everyone else is having. My brother lives with me but doesn’t drink wine at all, and I wouldn’t drink a normal bottle of wine in a reasonable amount of time to finish it before it would start to go bad. I’ve started experimenting with the little bottles you can buy, but haven’t gotten very far with that experiment, and I don’t think it’s going to be particularly good wine anyway. For now I’m sticking primarily with beer.
@harveydanger Okay, now we need a “favorite whiskey” thread (note the spelling, I’m an Irish whiskey only woman) Tullamore Dew is my most very favoritest.
You forgot the “both” option. It isn’t red or white but the actual wine is like/dislike. It’s like saying which is your favorite child… Each day it’s different.
Actual coolest way to open wine: So this is a bottle of wine, huh. Some fruit nonsense. Let’s see… what, is that the cork? There’s nothing to grab on to. Why is it all the way in the bottle? this must be why all those corkscrews are for sale. Maybe if I try… no, that’s just shredding it. Pliers smash it… knife too large… oh! I’ve got a pen knife that will fit! Stabby-stab, twist… and done!
in college we had art openings every thursday, aka a place to get a little drunk because the wine was free and the people serving it didn’t card. it gave me a stomach for cheap wine which can come in handy. then i only liked red. white was just a particular kind of bad to me.
now i can appreciate certain whites (cheap or otherwise - i actually like the whole foods three wishes [aka three bucks] white), and if the only thing to drink is wine i go for white because any strain of red stains my lips and teeth in one glass or less, and that’s not a good look. and it has to be cold. i’m not above adding ice to wine and i’m not ashamed, heh. just don’t try to feed me riesling or whatever, anything super sweet or flavored (a la boone’s farm) is just gross. might as well make some simple syrup and guzzle that.
but generally speaking, vodka is my go-to. whisky or scotch if it’s been a particular kind of day or night. silver tequila once in a blue moon. beer even less often, only if we’re at a nice pub type place.
Brown
We’re inclusive here in California. My wife and I love all colors of wine.
Both, depending on various things.
Favorite white is probably Gewürztraminer.

@baqui63 for that last red…
my wife and I are really fond of this one from TJs

Yummmmm, tannins.

@jqubed So you’re telling me he’s thinking about his mother in his happy place? Kidding… But thank you for explaining it. This way I learn new things.

I drink lower-tannin red wines, like those from France’s Pays d’Oc region.
What kind comes in those boxes?

@ConradHilton Ditto, ditto and ditto. I think it’s the evil tannins that do that. Give me a nice lager and I’m fine.

@jqubed I really like the vacu-vin stoppers for any ‘left over’ wine (yes… it does happen occasionally… OK, maybe rarely…)
Whisky.

As expected, not worth the effort.

Never stop wining. It’s good for you/bad for you/good for you/bad for you/good for you/bad for you…
Both. Just depends on what I’m pairing it with.

is mountain dew and vodka a real thing?
what else is available at the party for mixers?

which is all to say, i’ll drink wine, but only if there’s no liquor left.
All.
i don’t like wine at all
