@eeterrific I mean it’s not uncommon for people to wear glasses with clear lenses as a fashion accessory. You can get them in different colors, and the different shapes can accentuate your face, like wearing a hat.
so what is the process on getting prescription lenses to put into them? can those internet dealers ship lenses to you by giving them some model numbers with prescription?
@tomierna@username looking at the price online it’s $77 for the standard lens and they go up from there, they offer a 15% off coupon if you sign up for their spam list
@MrMikenIkes That would make the total cost in the same ballpark as Warby Parker and much more than something like Zenni. I find it hard to believe there’s a market for something like this…
@username you can bring frames to most opticians and have them put lenses in. Check out vision shops like those in Costco, Target, etc. There are online options, but local places will be able to properly adjust them for you.
@t0nyc0tt4m@username I have tried to get Costco to put lenses in my previous Costco frames, and they came up with an excuse not to do each one. “There’s a chip in the paint, you’d blame us.” “This hinge is flaky” (it was) “This weld is loose” (it wasn’t).
@bruhaha@MrMikenIkes Zenni sold me the absolute worst pair of glasses I’ve had since that time I took an ophthalmologist’s scrip to an optician.
I know lots of people have had great experiences with Zenni, but it’s hard to give them another chance when expensive high-index lenses are an absolute requirement.
Not a dig on opticians – my prescription was misfilled because use different power notations.
@username@whogots news to me that costco just won’t do it anymore. It used to be that they would just tell you they are not responsible for damage. In my opinion, you are still better off finding a local shop that will put the lenses in.
@craigthom It’s a bummer that they’ve devoured most of the landscape. I have a few pairs of Oakleys from pre-Luxottica and a pair from after. My impression is that that fanatical attention to quality/durability has disappeared.
I’ve still got a pair of original Juliets, had to send them in a couple times for a “tune up” due to wear on the rubber flex points. Last go round (post Luxottica) they charged me something in the neighborhood of $75 for the service. Not a bad deal, but previously it was a gratis service.
@username I wouldn’t say that, but it is sort of disappointing when the features/quality that made a brand successful/appealing disappear (for whatever reason). coughwootcough
For this price on Zenni you can get three sets of acetate glasses with actual prescription or shaded lenses in them. I’ve had nothing but good experiences.
@elpepe The last pairs I ordered all needed the nose pads adjusted and they never felt comfortable. Maybe I need to try a different style without those small nose pads?
@elpepe@Stallion I had to go with lenses without 'em 'cuz they always bent so they wouldn’t sit straight. (If I’m gonna look drunk at least let me be drunk.) They’re much more comfy, too.
@norman8 if you have to ask what other people do then these aren’t for you. These are for people who do their own thing. These are for people who have no idea Ray-Ban went out of style in 1994. These are for people like me.
@norman8 yes. As someone who wears glasses to see, I don’t understand it. Especially when people considered it nerdy to wear glasses. Now they commonly wear the styles that nerds would wear.
/image nerds movie
According to the remake of 21 Jump Street it’s cool to nerdy/geeky now, so…
You’re marketing these wrong; they should be advertised as “frames for contact lens wearers” …
“Happy with your contacts but tired of not having to deal with the hassles of glasses? Wear these and your problems will be solved!”
Last go around, when these were sold, they suggested buying replacement sunglass lenses for them. I did this. Specifically meh linked to the “Fuse” brand of aftermarket lenses.
These things were hot garbage. I made the mistake of cleaning them with the same microfiber I use on my other “nice” sunglasses and it destroyed the mirror tint on the lenses.
So, if you decide to go that route, maybe avoid the mirror tint? Or expect total garbage? IDK, but figured I would share.
what is the lens material? if it’s polycarbonate, then these would be good uv protection for people who recently got lasik. technically everyone needs uv protection, but most people don’t care…
@narfcake interesting.
notable excerpts from your link for the lurkers:
“CR-39 is a type of polycarbonate […] and is almost completely opaque in the ultraviolet range”
@bigsugar100 I always heard it as, “I called my boss this morning and told him I had Anal Glaucoma. Yeah, I just couldn’t see my ass coming into work today.”

(Insert generic “what’s that? Can’t make it out” joke here)
So… Ray-Ban but they don’t ban rays. Got it.
If the clear lens material is cr-39 or polycarbonate, it probably blocks UV light.
I don’t see myself buying this
Will they help me see the sign? Will I open up my eyes to the light?
@seraphimcaduto With these, I saw the sign. It opened up my eyes. No one’s gonna drag you to get into the light where you belong.
But…where do you belong?

@username I bought these last time and sent them out to lensabl to get prescription lenses put in.
@tomierna thx. what was the ballpark $$ for this operation?
@tomierna @username looking at the price online it’s $77 for the standard lens and they go up from there, they offer a 15% off coupon if you sign up for their spam list

@fastharry @t0nyc0tt4m @username Thank you for answering the question I was about to ask.
@username @whogots news to me that costco just won’t do it anymore. It used to be that they would just tell you they are not responsible for damage. In my opinion, you are still better off finding a local shop that will put the lenses in.
@fastharry @t0nyc0tt4m @username Mine does. They put computer to reading progressives in one of mine, new lenses in my son’s Oakleys, did a nice job.
It took a week, which isn’t a downside if you already have a pair to wear, and they took the insurance.
AFAIK they are independent, unlike most eyeglasses places. And this is a good thing.
I dislike Luxottica intensely.
@craigthom that sounds vaguely pornographic.
@craigthom It’s a bummer that they’ve devoured most of the landscape. I have a few pairs of Oakleys from pre-Luxottica and a pair from after. My impression is that that fanatical attention to quality/durability has disappeared.

@craigthom @hanzov69 so you guys don’t like the best capitalism system in the world?
@username I wouldn’t say that, but it is sort of disappointing when the features/quality that made a brand successful/appealing disappear (for whatever reason). coughwootcough

Do people wear glasses without lenses? Is that a thing?
@norman8 if you have to ask what other people do then these aren’t for you. These are for people who do their own thing. These are for people who have no idea Ray-Ban went out of style in 1994. These are for people like me.

@norman8 I know everyone hates the new Ghostbusters movie so much, but this scene is relevant:
Kevin the receptionist Glasses
You’re marketing these wrong; they should be advertised as “frames for contact lens wearers” …
“Happy with your contacts but tired of not having to deal with the hassles of glasses? Wear these and your problems will be solved!”
“If you’re reading this, you don’t need glasses.”
Thanks. I’m the only one in the family that doesn’t wear glasses.
@JT954 Then you do need these to fit in to your family!
@caffeineguy Solved this problem last year.
Why not leave out the hardened silica and save that vitreous resource?
Can you c me now?
@givemehdeal n o
Seeing is believing so I believe Meh-self is tempted to buy them // well “Meh” be not but don’t you see what I’m saying ?
Nothing to see here. Move along.

@hanzov69 Anything ray-ban is total garbage. I am not sure what you were expecting.
@Fen_Star @hanzov69 Reading comprehension, woogums. The complaint was not about Ray-Ban.
@hanzov69- Mr. 69, do you happen to have that Fuse link? Would you share that?!!
@Fen_Star @whogots Correct… the lenses were sucktastic.
@decoratedwarvet Against my better judgement…

@hanzov69 I went with these and I’ve been pretty impressed with them. Maybe it was just that mirror finish?

If I want to look like Erkel…I’d be buying stuff at WOOT!
@fastharry- Erkle is The Man! Did I say that?
what is the lens material? if it’s polycarbonate, then these would be good uv protection for people who recently got lasik. technically everyone needs uv protection, but most people don’t care…
@tjamesturner They’ll be the same demo lenses as in any other empty frames. They aren’t meant to be worn, so I doubt they’d use an expensive plastic.
@whogots dollar store sunglasses use polycarbonate, so i don’t think that cost is an issue.
@tjamesturner @whogots Eyewear typically use CR-39.

@narfcake interesting.

I must need glasses as I seem to be having an issue finding the proofreader at meh who missed three errors in this one sentence.
@cinoclav-wha cho talkin bout, Willis?!¡
I can see Daniel waving goodbye
@JaicienilThat’s not Daniel; that’s those tears in your eyes!! Simmer Down Now!! Simmer!!
I called into work today with an eye problem. I just couldn’t see going in.
@bigsugar100 I always heard it as, “I called my boss this morning and told him I had Anal Glaucoma. Yeah, I just couldn’t see my ass coming into work today.”
@bigsugar100-That’s old; your Boss uses that excuse all the time, even 4Xs a week!¡
You have your numbers transposed in the model number on the spec page. I’m OCD, you must fix this now!

Maybe a stupid question, but the Ray-Ban on the lenses is a sticker, right?
