Ranch Fiends
8It goes with anything. Pizza. French Fries. Salads. Weird things you probably shouldn’t put it on.
So we in the Meh Customer Support department really wanna know, what’s your favorite brand/type of Ranch Dressing?
Can be store bought, the one you get from your favorite restaurant, or maybe you’ve got a killer ranch recipe you’re ready to share.
I’ll start us off: Pluckers has some dang good ranch. My favorite for the time being.

Cowboy Chicken.
Wing Stop.
HEB.
@ChadP Nice to see people that shop at the Butt.
@ChadP @yakkoTDI Hill Country Faire for LIFE!
Plus my homemade ranch is dope.
@ChadP When do you plan to share your delicious ranch with us?
@Targaryen I thought you were on the run.
@yakkoTDI dammit! Nice try Chad trying to lure me in with ranch!
@ChadP “Is” = “contains”?
The Lighthouse Farms Jalapeno Ranch is great for dipping! Found that one day grocery shopping while cripplingly hungover and it saved the day.
@GetClosure oooooooo jalapeno ranch sounds really good
@brandom @GetClosure It does!
@GetClosure This stuff is the best. I’m not a heavy ranch user so for the longest time I was fine with whatever, but a local pizza place had litehouse cups to go with their wings and totally won me over on the brand, once I found the jalapeño in store I’ve never looked back.
@brandom @GetClosure @Kyeh @metaphore The contrast between ranch & spicy stuff is the BEST. It’s my go-to with anything spicy/zesty, i never understood the blue cheese thing.
So I kinda like the hidden valley ranch packet things to make ranch dip? My partner affectionately calls it chunky ranch to make me die inside.
Otherwise wing places in general. They’ve always got that good 'ish.
@SpoopySkeleton Yep! But the one where you add real buttermilk and mayo!!
@llangley this is the way. It’s how most restaurants do it too.
The reason the stuff in the bottle isn’t as good is that it’s made with oil instead of dairy to be shelf stable.
Ranch dressing is not so gross that I wouldn’t let it into my house, but I’m not going to eat it.
@Limewater But is it good enough to buy packets of it to give out around Halloween?
@Targaryen Maybe around Halloween, but not on Halloween. On Halloween I give out entire rolls of Necco Wafers.
@Limewater @Targaryen Dastardly! Both of ye!
ranch is basically MSG.
@earlyre MSG is delicious. I don’t see a problem.
@ChadP
@ChadP I didn’t either, until my brother started having reactions to it…
Reactions?
He can always tell if food has MSG because of the above.
There are also several wordings they can use in ingredient listings to hide msg…
Among them “natural flavors”, “yeast extract” to name a just a couple.
@earlyre Ranch and my sunscreen both share an ingredient - titanium dioxide. That’s what gives ranch dressing it’s white color. Yuuck!
@earlyre @steeltoesenator What’s your sunscreen taste like?
@ChadP @earlyre My sympathies to people who are sensitive to MSG, but thank sweet baby Jesus I’m not one of them! Fortunately, a real sensitivity to MSG is a lot more rare than people think it is, in most cases it’s an example of the “nocebo effect” from the days when anecdotal cases were accepted as scientific evidence, with no double blind testing, etc, to corroborate it. There are lots of interesting articles out there about the subject, like this one:
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-msg-got-a-bad-rap-flawed-science-and-xenophobia/
@blaineg @earlyre See above. About as yucky as ranch. (I only know what my sunscreen tastes like because I use it on my face religiously and occasionally some gets on my lips.)
@earlyre How does naturally occurring MSG affect them?
@ChadP from my understanding, there is no naturally occurring MSG…
There are other Glutimates that occurs naturally, and in moderation, they’re fine.
My brother’s body seems to react solely to Monosodium Glutimates.
And Gluten ( diarrhea), and Dairy protein ( swollen tendons in his hands, basically locking them into a claw shape).
He’s got dietary restrictions… basically can’t go out to eat. Can’t really trust anyone’s cooking besides his own.
We even have to keep sugar packets for him, because of cross contamination with our sugar and flour containers…
But he can tell pretty quickly if he’s eaten something with msg in it.
@earlyre @steeltoesenator Lol, titanium dioxide is in loads of foods. Some white bread has it, so does skim milk(there is a weird loophole on skim milk where the titanium dioxide is technically used as a processing aid so it isn’t even on the ingredient list, but is also the only reason skim milk isn’t bluish semi transparent watery stuff).
It is also a very common component of sand, so you are more or less just eating a bit of dust. Probably less dust than if you eat beets or carrots, but dust, nonetheless.
My favorite restaurant ranch is Popeye’s, it’s got a nice, fresh herby flavor. Dammit, now i want some!
The English treat mayo like ranch. Mayo on Pizza. French Fries. Salads. Weird things you probably shouldn’t put it on.
@blaineg The Japanese also put it on things we wouldn’t, like pizza. They DO have better mayo, though.
/image Kewpie mayo
@blaineg @Kyeh Intried it and I swear I didnt see a difference.
Think maybe my tastebuds are still dead from covid?
@blaineg @tinamarie1974 I don’t know! I just find it richer and more eggy tasting than the usual Kraft or Hellmans.
@blaineg @Kyeh
My nephew bought that without knowing what it was…
He had no idea it was Asian
he thought it was what they used at “Kewpee Hamburgers”
Kewpee Hamburgers doesn’t even use mayo…they have miracle whip…
https://www.kewpeehamburgers.com
@blaineg @earlyre
Looks like a neat place!
Did he like the mayo? It’s kind of expensive.
@blaineg @Kyeh @tinamarie1974
I highly recommend you go out of your way to ensure you are acquiring made-in-Japan Kewpie mayonnaise which is rich, savoury, unsweetened, and full of umami, as opposed to the American-made “Japanese” Kewpie mayonnaise that is sugar-sweetened and tastes a lot like Miracle Whip to me.
From the kewpieshop website:
Kewpie (product of Japan) ingredients:
Kewpie (product of USA) ingredients:
Be aware that Costco now carries what I consider a Franken-Kewpie, made in the USA with what they are calling the Japanese formula, but it looks to be a smashup of the two:
So yeah, just try to find the sugar-free stuff for a real treat! I do love the made-in-Japan stuff!
ps. word to the wise that Costco also currently carries a Kewpie-brand “deep roasted sesame” salad dressing/sauce which IS INSANELY GREAT.
@blaineg @curtise @tinamarie1974
I do - I get it from the insipidly-named “Yummy Bazaar,” which carries a lot of nice international foods. Or sometimes from the official Kewpie site.
But yeah, that may explain why you didn’t think it tasted any different, tinamarie?
@blaineg @Kyeh saw that at the grocery the other day and wondered what it was… Good to know
@blaineg @curtise @Kyeh could be, I got mine from Amazon. Going to check now…
The best ranch is…
No, wait, wrong ranch.
Actually it is…
@2many2no I think your ranch has gone off, it’s turned yellow.
@2many2no I don’t think I’ve tried his honey mustard, but Ray makes a hell of a Secret Sauce! It’s great on onion rings & fries.
@2many2no @ircon96 We also like SBR’s barbeque sauce. Really good on pulled pork.
