Unfortunately I am at work until 2300 tonight, then back for 16 hours starting at 0645 tomorrow, so can’t post pics of the rest of the flowers blooming right now, but will try to do that on Wed. (Lavender and phlox, are the only purple stuff in bloom right now…)
We have had a super nice spring so lots of stuff is blooming, some is done blooming (azaleas and irises have pretty well played out) and my tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and cukes are making fruits now as well.
@tinamarie1974 Thanks… that’s part of the beauty of life locally and being raised by parents that loved flowers. (the fact my wife is an avid gardener also is a bonus!)
Technically, yes. I am related to the owner of an independent florist loc. I think they have membership in FTD and some other florist wire-service offerings.
Tho I know nothing about the biz.
Don’t give me plants or flowers tho, if they still have roots.
I don’t want to describe the likely ensuing carnage, that would be upsetting.
@f00l Reason I ask is my wife just figured an FTD ‘hack’ for a friend’s b-day. Instead of sending flowers by FTD she used “instacart” and had them delivered from a grocer for a FRACTION of the cost. Sent half a dozen bouquets and a balloon for about $50 to Atlanta.
@chienfou
Ok. I understand why people do that. Congrats that she figured that out. Gave her an op to do something amazing for a lesser cost.
But pls be aware that florists aren’t getting rich.
And for reasons due to climate/time of year, and preservation of the flowers etc, florists are NOT profiteering of Valentine’s Day and similar.
Maybe it’s just biz evolution. Natural advantages accruing for the large and powerful kills off the small and weak or whatever.
But people still don’t want to go to a grocery for weddings and funerals and really special setups like fancy parties or custom work.
Otherwise, grocery store chains would have killed off the small florist biz in the way that Amazon has destroyed so many small booksellers, and even Border’s Books. And even Barnes and Noble isn’t doing great.
The side effect of all that savings and convenience is the death of many small independent businesses, and the increasing concentration of wealth into large corporations and their share prices.
I know this, tho I still wanna have convenience and save $ too. I’m as bad as anyone else about the long-terms of my choices.
@f00l I understand your point and I am sure that most florists are far from ‘rich’. I have seen some fantastic arrangements done by very creative florists. I have been on both sides of that (small business owner) equation.
My only issue with FTD is that I have had a couple of occasions where we used a florist that delivered flowers I was not overly impressed with. Part of the appeal was that one person could deliver the flowers, a balloon and (if we had been thinking about it early enough) a cake or cupcakes etc.
@Pufferfishy@tinamarie1974 very nice… I can only grow orchids inside during the winter. I do have a bunch of plumaria that is starting to leaf out and makes amazing flowers in the summer.
@chienfou Frangipani are one of my favorites! I had 3 in pots on my deck but they just didn’t do well for long, so I moved them to the yard last “fall” - they’re just starting as well…
(pics from last year)
We even had “wild begonias” and a coconut palm sprout up from nowhere!
@f00l@Pufferfishy Nice!. Mine are potted and go in and out of the poolhouse as the temps permit. Currently there are 5 stalks in a (?) 20 inch pot. I think I’m gonna re-pot them after the summer once I can figure out what colors they are. I’ll cut them back and root the cuts on the ones I want more of. Have one rooted now from a piece that broke off while I was moving them thru a sliding glass doorway.
I also have a couple of seed pods on one which I am really excited about…
@f00l Is it bluebonnets??? that are all over the sides of the roads in Texas? I remember seeing them a lot, and even pulling over to take photos with my kid in them, but can’t remember what they are called. I am thinking they are in bloom early April as we’d see them going to south Dallas for Cambodian New Year.
@f00l@tinamarie1974 I don’t recall that they had a pinky red deeper inside them although the shape was maybe similar. It has been years. I was told by someone else who stopped where we did as that hillside along the highway was just covered in them, that Texas was known for them; that some farmers charge people to come and take their photos in them. It was really beautiful.
@tinamarie1974
Your (and everyone else’s) flowers are beautiful! I am very curious what species your third picture is? I would love to get some plants of my own that are similar to that one
@thejackalope thanks! I am not certain the exact name, but it is a ground covering similar to Aubrieta Cultorum. The flowers are quite small and the plant spreads/crawls, flowering all summer. I am fairly certain I picked it up at Lowes.
@Barneybot isn’t a real bot.
@Barney loves purple
@Barney loves purple.
@jst1ofknd I love purple, but I have no purple flowers.
purple loves @barney.
Here’s a sampling of what is blooming in my yard.

@Barney @mediocrebot you forgot smart aster…
@f00l you have any connection to FTD?

Ok, enough off topic.
Your garden is gorgeous.

@chienfou
My rant function is turned /off for this instant
If you and your wife are happy with what you sent, I’m happy for you. : )

@chienfou Clever move of your wife’s to figure out how to get flowers delivered, in a way that is cheaper, and the recipient is happy.
It’s literally coming to the end of our growing season here in FL.
I’ve already had amaryllis
…and orchids…
Pineapples are well underway…
Have been enjoying cherry tomatoes…
…just picked the first beefsteak on Monday…
Gardenia season is off with a bang…
(20 of these bushes surround my pool)
My red passionflower (that hides an ugly chain-link fence) is jamming per the usual…
And I have bleeding hearts - which are kinda purple!!!
Not really flowers - but the caladiums are jamming too
@Barneybot isn’t a real bot.
And MAX!
@Pufferfishy beautiful! Thanks for sharing.

@f00l @Pufferfishy Wow… while I was at work yesterday (from 0700 to 2300!) one of the 2 seed pods opened on my plumeria… what are the odds!
My dog Sam eats purple flowers.
purple loves @barney.
@Barney @mediocrebot
only the purple ones? That’s odd…
@Barneybot isn’t a real bot.
@ThunderChicken do purple flowers taste better than the other colors?
@Barneybot isn’t a real bot.
@tinamarie1974 @chienfou Sam thinks purple flowers are the best! Especially with snow and rain and bright sunshine.
@ThunderChicken Sam is a very smart dog.
Found these today
@f00l
Black-eyed susans…

@Kidsandliz @tinamarie1974
Bluebonnets are only late Mar early April and then they’re gone
I’m not sure what these are they may be some different variety of paintbrush or they may be something else I should really look it up or something
