Hi All,
Not gonna get too involved here, just wanted to remind everybody that today is the final day for the free upgrade to Windows 10 from qualified PCs running Windows 7 or newer. Details in the following link:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-upgrade
I strongly recommend everyone do it. If you don’t like it, you can downgrade back to your previous OS, but still keep the right to upgrade for free later.
I hope this shuts GWX up for pcs that won’t be upgraded as well.
@djslack Aug 2nd’s update should clear up all of that (Win 10 has it’s big update, and everyone else gets updates changing the Win10 update notices).
@djslack you can disable that.
@Pantheist Oh yeah, I know. I have some remote users that aren’t really accessible, though, and had two systems “update themselves” and freak said users out. One of them broke legacy software, the other just freaked out.
It was only a couple of outliers, though.
@djslack welp, sounds like you have a handle on it
Don’t wanna.
@Barney
@mfladd is that how I make you feel? :’(
@jbartus no. It just made me laugh.
Getting ready to upgrade. Backing up my photos just in case something goes horribly wrong.
@RiotDemon
@jbartus hahahahaha…nice post.
@jbartus as I was writing it, I thought of the song… But too lazy to post, lol
@RiotDemon @mfladd I couldn’t resist.
So trying to copy my photos to DVDs so I have a slightly more permanent backup… It seems that I might of broken my DVD Rom… Or the computer, lol.
Currently trying to restart it but of course it had updates to do and it won’t let me restart without doing them… Ugh.
@RiotDemon running short on hours!
@jbartus I know. I’ve been anxiously watching the downloader for the last hour. It downloaded and took forever “preparing for installation” I hope it does something quickly.
And as soon as I posted it FINALLY went to the screen where I had to accept the terms of whatever.
I still haven’t closed the DVD tray because nobody got time for dat.
I guess I’ll find out in an hour or two if I actually broke it.
@RiotDemon shouldn’t take too long if you’re doing a clean install.
@jbartus I have no idea what that means. I hit upgrade and let it do its thing.
@RiotDemon not what you’re doing.
@jbartus oh well. It’s running again, so that’s all that matters.
@jbartus I can’t help that I haven’t had a computer in like… 4+ years and am completely out of the loop as to what computer stuff is nowadays.
@RiotDemon nobody’s blaming you or anything, I was just noting that a clean install was fast compared to an upgrade
@jbartus haha. I’m such a noob. Can I go back to Windows 95?
@RiotDemon I wouldn’t advise it. Getting even Windows 98 SE to function is nearly impossible without legacy hardware.
@jbartus I really was kidding. That was my first OS, and at the time, I really understood computers. It was downhill after that.
@RiotDemon I miss DOS
@jbartus
So do i. In a way, i miss my first rbg monitor.
yup more ads incoming.
I used to ignore my pc’s. Then I got all anxious last weekend and 10’d them.
Back to ignoring.
(Hey, there, Redmond!)
I put it off and put it off … well, it’s a go … I think. It’s still downloading …
@narfcake
@narfcake I hope your internet is fast. If the Windows Update download is slugging along try getting the standalone from the site and installing to a USB key. You can still use it as an upgrade but I’ve found it was faster.
@jbartus Thanks for jinxing it. It was stuck at 31% for over 40 minutes. I’ve restarted using the creation tool instead for the ISO file.
@narfcake I was just trying to be helpful. I’ve only done a couple hundred of these now… or at least it feels that way, I stopped counting after 30 or so.
@narfcake Save Toto!
@jbartus There’s only two that will be upgraded here - both W8 PCs.
I thought about updating my W7 laptop but skipped the idea for any potential legacy hardware/software issues.
@narfcake might want to upgrade and then roll back just to keep your options open. My $0.02
As best me and the rest of my IT friends have been able to determine Microsoft is basically fingerprinting the hardware for these free 10 activations, so once you’ve activated once you should theoretically be able to reinstall 10 at any time.
@jbartus I’ll think about it. Maybe I’ll do so on the $80 laptop I got from Goodwill.
@jbartus The W8 computers upgraded well (or so it seemed). I’m doing the W7P laptop after all, though since it was a 32-bit installation, W10P is installing 32-bit also.
I’m waaaaaaaay past my bedtime.
@jbartus Ninety nine upgrades to Windows One Oh, ninety nine upgrades from hell…
@narfcake you can do a clean install later if you like and upgrade to 64. Be sure to check the activation section in Settings for whether or not it activated.
@OldCatLady what? You have a lot of devices???
@jbartus Who, me? I’m down to one Vista brick, an XP machine with an iffy battery, two Win10s (I caved at the last minute and did it), and a few Androids in assorted flavors. And I’m looking at a Raspberry Pi, to see if I can take over the world. I was just hoping to give you an earworm.
/giphy Raspberry Pi
80 minutes left…
I broke down and did it… Took for-fucking-ever but I didn’t encounter any errors. For that I’m happy as the rest of my day was pretty much shit. Had to change my tire in the pouring rain on the way to work this morning thanks to some asshole leaving screws in the road. No sooner got it changed (and I was drenched) when I hit the highway only to find an accident ahead and everyone doing no more than 10 mph. Just to note, I AM grateful to actually have a nice new(ish) car which allows me to get flat tires. Life could be much worse.
Windows, you’d better keep working damnit.
@cinoclav I’m lost… get flat tires as opposed to self destructing?
@jbartus
Maybe a car that gets flat tires as opposed to no car at all.
@DVDBZN ah, yes, that makes sense.
So, are we done with nags? Did Elvis actually leave the building?
So long GWX Control Panel, you’ve been wonderful for the last year!
Thanks for reminding me- Up graded my 2 in 1 laptop/tablet from Windows 8.1-worst windows since vista. Rest of my computers running Windows 7 Pro which I love. Just bought a new Dell XPS 6900 with a core 7 sixth generation processor. Came with Windows 7 Pro installed with an upgrade dick for Windows 10 Pro.
@Felton10 What port do you insert that upgrade dick into? Make sure you do some thorough penetration testing after all is said and done.
If you use assistive technologies you can get it free, still. Does that include say, magnifier? I know it’s more like JAWS or DNS.
@juststephen https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade heres the link
and its easy, you download the exe and it upgrades you to windows 10 as usual
@jbartus hurrayyyy … my software recognizes its dongle!!! (sounds rude!) but at least I can access my embroidery designs… now I have to try to write to media, but that is for another day!
@mikibell what kind of embroidery software are you using? Pulse?
@jbartus Husqvarna 3D Professional
@mikibell I had no idea they were even in the embroidery industry O_o
@jbartus Yes, they make awesome sewing machines… even though mine is over 10 years old, it sews like a dream… and embroiders beautifully.
@jbartus Stealing @trisk’s photo… but I digitized the meh logo (first time doing that) and made meh. coffee holders with their software and sewing machine. I think I need a better quality meh image to do a better job digitizing.
@mikibell can you use a vector file? If not I can send you a super high resolution source.
I forgot.
@DaveInSoCal such is life.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@DaveInSoCal Ditto.

@thismyusername
If you’re crass. Or you use assistive technologies. Or both.
Hmmm.
Are there assistive technologies to help crass people get thru life? Are free upgrades technically a form of assistive tech in themselves? I hope so…upgrades assist, and crass people could use “assistive stuff for crass people”.
