I got this (well, these) back when it was two for $12, it’s actually pretty good. Works well enough, makes a good cold brew. And cheap enough to buy 2 so you have a replacement if/when you break the carafe.
@robson Same here. I spotted this device at Ollie’s (bargain, close-out store, not sure where they’re located) a year or three ago and it was $5 or $10 and I like tea, so I bought it and it’s terrific for warmer weather where I don’t want to brew (or drink) hot tea. I usually load it up before my walk and when I come back, I have tea. I love it.
@revmitcz I’ve never had a problem with it, but there’s definitely one instruction the reviewer didn’t seem to follow at all, and two choices that I’ve made that seemed to help my results.
instruction: after turning off the tornado, let the carafe sit for at least 5 minutes before plunging. They seemed to go straight to plunging.
choice: 30 full minutes of tornado.
choice: I’ve never filled all the way to the water fill line. I’m only making it for myself and don’t need that much at a time.
@paxsarah@revmitcz Yeah. They didn’t follow the directions for plunging. It generally works pretty well when you do follow those directions. That settling time helps a lot with the cloudiness and “chalkiness” also.
I usually try to leave an hour in the morning and let it go for 45 minutes and sit for 10-15 minutes to settle. So it isn’t as fast as brewing a drip pot, but it is much faster than overnight…
Got these I think the first time they were offered, and I can still recommend trying it out, especially at this price. I’m not even a coffee enthusiast and I liked the cold brew it produces.
It doesn’t finely filter out all the coffee grounds, so there is a little sediment remaining; you could filter the coffee again if you’d like, but I didn’t and it didn’t bother me at all.
The amount produced is probably only enough for 3-4 cups, but it’s quick enough to make more.
The only real downside is that cleaning the grounds out can be a mess. I think it’s still worth it, but it’s a point worth noting.
@luseruser Because we’re discounting it on SideDeal for our Black Friday campaign, but discounting it even more for today’s Meh deal - no difference between the two!
@luseruser We have the same product in multiple places on occasion, and it just looks like I forgot to update one of 'em. They both match now – thank you!
I got this previously (when it was a 2-fer). I had more success with it than the coffee nerd in the video above. I would say that…it’s fine. Okay. Not terrible. I have multiple ways to make nice coffee. But don’t typically have the patience for cold brew. This makes an 80% of the way cold brew-like coffee in 30 minutes instead of half a day. Use this with your least fancy coffee and add some cream or milk. For forty dollars? I would have felt hard done by. For five dollars? I’d buy one if I didn’t already have two.
@Lynnerizer I like mine, cold brew is a good process for extracting coffee and this let’s you make it quickly. $5 is too cheap to pass up (unless you already have one. Mine lives next to my considerably more expensive espresso machine.
Strangely I think this is better for your amateur chemistry lab that needs a magnetic stirrer. As long as your reaction doesn’t react with the other exposed bits it’s really just a flask with a magnetic stirrer at the bottom and a way to strain the results.
I generally like this thing, but I use it now and then.
It is a REALLY cheap stir plate for homebrewing. Unfortunately, it will not work with magnetic stir bars, because of the placement of the magnets inside the base. But you can mix yeast with the insert that comes with it…

You didn’t buy the 4 pack in the Meh-rathon?
What happened to Scenario 3?
@joeywolf It was classified and redacted…
@joeywolf The first rule of Scenario 3 is don’t talk about Scenario 3.

Do you see a sign over my door that says Instant Regret Kit Storage?
@joybus If my wife comes home and sees another kitchen gadget on the counter I’m going to get a divorce, and I don’t want to get a divorce.
Déjà brew.
A coffee nerd gave it a full review and it didn’t go well :
@revmitcz
Yeah at least when you follow the directions it seems like a miss.
Though the comment that it makes a good hot, um, cold (?) chocolate is interesting.

How come its $6.99 on SideDeal? Are they the same? Or more features… like SD version can make a Margarita
@luseruser Because we’re discounting it on SideDeal for our Black Friday campaign, but discounting it even more for today’s Meh deal - no difference between the two!
If you go on SD heading Black Friday Deals its $8; meanwhile on SD heading kitchen deals its $6.99 …or vice versa. WTD (WHERES THE DEAL)? Or WTH?
@luseruser

I think the “deal” is right here on Meh for $5.00!
I hope your question wasn’t rhetorical.
Lol

Does cold brew taste the same as regular automatic drip coffee? If not would someone please explain the difference.

On second thought…
I mean, my goodness it’s so cheap, I could just try it out for $5.
Edit- after watching the YouTube review video posted above I’m not sure it’s worth trying, even for $5.00!
@Lynnerizer I like mine, cold brew is a good process for extracting coffee and this let’s you make it quickly. $5 is too cheap to pass up (unless you already have one. Mine lives next to my considerably more expensive espresso machine.
I purchases this its just not the same as cold brewing
…but in fix… it’ll do pig …it’ll do
@user01536422 you mean, “I purchases this, my precious!”, no?
Strangely I think this is better for your amateur chemistry lab that needs a magnetic stirrer. As long as your reaction doesn’t react with the other exposed bits it’s really just a flask with a magnetic stirrer at the bottom and a way to strain the results.
Also, buying 2 more at this price.
@thucom Please update us on your experiments.
