I agree. The only exception are those European ones where topless women are introduced to a men's locker room to make the dudes think they're in the wrong room. Those are hilarious.
I strongly dislike prank shows. Especially the ones that traumatize people. Not only are they mean, but dangerous. A psycho clown with an axe running after some people could give them a heart attack. And speaking for myself, as a disabled person who cannot run from a threat, if I saw that axe-wielding psycho clown running at me? I'd shoot him. Not so funny. :/
They're filler shows at best, and no longer needed. To me, They are--or were, the bridge between the "America's Funniest Home Videos" era and Modern Day "Watch any prank whenever you want" Youtube Era
@ProfessorGenki AFV is more of a "Look at all these people getting hit in the groin!" show now. YouTube is wearing them down I bet, though the prize money keeps the submissions coming.
I think this bothers you the right amount, Irk. And I was equally dismayed to learn that Candid Camera is back. Instead of creating original programming, they chose to resurrect something I thought was long dead. I guess TV shows can't all be Hannibal or Bob's Burgers.
@bluedyn Well, no, they can't all be Hannibal or Bob's Burgers in that most shows aspire to be popular. [I should clarify that I think those are two of the best shows on TV, in part because they are willing to go places that potentially limit their appeal to a broad audience.]
@Collin1000 It's amazing, isn't it? It creates such a feeling of real relationships because the voice actors record their scenes together. I don't think any other animated show right now does that, and it makes such a difference.
@mossygreen Didn't even occur to me that I'd picked two shows that are defying the odds by being renewed. Yet I love them both, probably because they're both so willing to be different. If only different were a good thing . . .
@bluedyn I added Hannibal and Bob's Burgers to my Netfilx playlist. Nothing sings high praise, like praise from random strangers, on a 1 deal a day site.
@bluedyn Luckily for everyone with a brain, Hannibal has been renewed for season 3 already. @marklog you're completely right and if Hannibal gets canceled I'm going to blame you.
I create the site without any regard for decency, there is no honor in this. Only the horrific, unnatural, flimsy concept of offering a single deal a day. My victim's cries are silenced as an endless avalanche of Roombas and Dysons crush their frail bodies. I make sure to leave my mark - a speaker dock placed gently atop their lifeless forms. This is my design.
@caffeine_dude The person who hooked me into Bob's Burgers had me watch a few episodes from Season 3 first. Having started backwards, I find Season 1 uncomfortable to watch.
@mossygreen Since they run in the spring, we have enough time to analyze and speculate more than we or anyone else wants to see in the forum. I'm game. :)
Does Nathan For You count as prank TV here? Because that show would be the one exception over which I would have to disagree with Irk, and disagreeing with Irk would make me sad. Sure, yes, it's more or less prank TV, but it takes the comedy in such weird and honest direction that it's almost more a study of socialization and human nature. At least how they edit it, anyway.
Depends on the pranks. Shows like The Carbonaro Effect () are generally harmless pranks, which don't bother me. The old Candid Camera was also harmless fun. Some of the "mean" prank shows, those I think cross the line. Have to wait and see if the new Candid Camera retains the light-hearted nature of the original.
So tell us Irk, were you on the receiving end of one of these pointless pranks? Someone tie firecrackers to your tail while you were sleeping? Some crazed barber character chase you around with a medieval hedge clipper threatening your bad-ass frock?
I have a permanent grudge against Ashton Kutcher for making Jessica Alba sad about the cancellation of Dark Angel on his stupid show... Whatever it was called... I don't remember.
@Teripie True Detective was amazing but there is more good TV now than ever before. TV is where all of the best stories are being told now. Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Hannibal, Fargo, Louie, Orange is the New Black…take your pick.
I admit, I liked some of the Scare Tactics pranks when they first came out. They were (at least to me) something new - pranks with a budget and some special effects. That made it pretty interesting. And besides, one of the best lines ever "Do you need help little man?"
A lot of the prank shows just come off as mean or dumb. "Let's give a stranger PTSD, won't that be hilarious?"

@Pony I don't know, a disabled person shooting an axe-wielding clown sounds pretty funny to me...
@Sabre99 I guess we all have our definitions of "funny"... ;p
@Sabre99 Beat me to it!
They're filler shows at best, and no longer needed.

@Collin1000 The only thing keeping AFHV going is old people that don't know any better.
I think this bothers you the right amount, Irk. And I was equally dismayed to learn that Candid Camera is back. Instead of creating original programming, they chose to resurrect something I thought was long dead. I guess TV shows can't all be Hannibal or Bob's Burgers.
But there must be room for a show that combines those
@matthew Archer?

@mossygreen Just discovered Bob's Burgers two weeks ago. Watched all 3 seasons on Netflix binge style. I am addicted.

@caffeine_dude Good news! If you like them both, you're welcome. If you don't, @marklog
@bluedyn I've taken plenty of blame over the past 12 days, and I'm happy to do so. But not this. No way.
@marklog And to think I awarded you the Miss Congeniality sash.
@bluedyn Hannibal is too good. The blame for someone not digging that show must fall squarely on the misguided taste of the viewer.
@bluedyn Luckily for everyone with a brain, Hannibal has been renewed for season 3 already. @marklog you're completely right and if Hannibal gets canceled I'm going to blame you.

@JonT I want to see the Irk video version of this.
@bluedyn omg Irk's interpretations of critically acclaimed television dramas. Best. Videos. Ever.
@marklog Hell yes! Where's @matthew in this conversation?
@caffeine_dude The person who hooked me into Bob's Burgers had me watch a few episodes from Season 3 first. Having started backwards, I find Season 1 uncomfortable to watch.
@bluedyn It looks like we could have a nice little discussion group going here by the time season 3 starts.
@mossygreen Since they run in the spring, we have enough time to analyze and speculate more than we or anyone else wants to see in the forum. I'm game. :)

I like long-form Irk.
So tell us Irk, were you on the receiving end of one of these pointless pranks? Someone tie firecrackers to your tail while you were sleeping? Some crazed barber character chase you around with a medieval hedge clipper threatening your bad-ass frock?

@katylava Punk'd. Notice the trendy omission of the vowel.
@marklog Punkd was Web 3.0 before it was cool
@JonT no thank you.
@marklog In name only. Don't worry I think that show was terrible.
I gave up on commercial television long ago. It just gets dumber and dumber. The last decent thing on TV was "True Detective."
@Teripie True Detective was amazing but there is more good TV now than ever before. TV is where all of the best stories are being told now. Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Hannibal, Fargo, Louie, Orange is the New Black…take your pick.
@JonT no joke. there hasn't been this kind of good TV since
